Scouts to Collect Food for Local Food Banks

Local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be collecting food for the local food banks this Saturday in the Annual Scouting for Food Drive.

Scouts will be outside grocery stores and also going door to door for canned and other non-perishable food items.

The goal of the annual food drive is to replenish the shelves of local food banks after the holidays when many might not otherwise remember those in need.

Candidate Forum Tonight

Miami Police are investigating the theft of a trailer full of equipment from a Miami residence. The doors and the wheels of the trailer were locked, so it took time and effort to take the trailer. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 63 year old Ignacio Renteria on a failure to comply warrant for issuing a bad check.

50 year old Mark Riggs was arrested on a child support warrant.

Deputies are investigating criminal damage to water pipes at a residence on Euclid and the theft of a cord of wood from a residence on Old Oak.

Volunteers Needed to Clean Up Lower Salt River

The Tonto National Forest is looking for volunteers to help clean up the Lower Salt River area. A River Bank Cleanup will take place on Saturday, February 18 from 9:am to 1:pm at the Blue Point Recreation Site.

Miami Police were called to the area near Maquey Mobile Home Park about two men dumping trash into the nearby canyon. The men were caught and taken to the Miami Police Department.

A child was bitten by a dog on Merrit Street and received minor injuries. 36 year old Kari Moya was cited for the violations.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on North Broad Street. One driver was cited for making an unsafe lane change.

No injuries were reported in a two vehicle accident last night on Highway 60.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Charles Fee for burglary, trafficking in stolen property and theft.

Two people were arrested during a traffic stop yesterday afternoon on Ice House Canyon Road. 30 year old Syvina Gomez was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. 43 year old Thomas Henson was arrested on a child support warrant.

23 year old Kyle Hamlet was arrested yesterday for driving with a suspended license.

A juvenile was cited in connection with a burglary on Roberts Road.

Public Forum For Globe School Superintendent Search

The Globe Unified School District will have a public forum next Thursday, February 9 about the search for a new superintendent. The steps in the process will be defined and the public will help develop a superintendent’s profile.

A survey has also been created for community input. The survey will be online until February 10 at the Globe District web site at globeschools.org. It is anonymous and goes directly to the Arizona School Boards Association for data collection and interpretation.

23 year old Chandra Porto was arrested for shoplifting at Beall’s Outlet.

Officers are investigating criminal damage at the Besh Ba Gowah Museum, a residence on Buena Vista Drive, a residence on South Tenth Street; and an assault report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21 year old Dixie Williams in connection with a recent burglary on Green Avenue.

SR 77 Closed Between Globe and Winkelman

The Arizona Department of Transportation says State Route 77 is closed between State Route 177 in Winkelman and US 70 in Globe. Crews are dealing with a hazardous materials incident caused by a leak of sulfuric acid from a tanker truck along a 27-mile stretch of the highway. The highway is expected to remain closed until mid-day.

Drivers can use State Route 177 and US 60 to go between Winkelman and Globe, which will add approximately 30 minutes to the trip.

Copper Cities Community Players Auditions

The Copper Cites Community Players will have auditions on Friday, February 10 for the 2012-2013 production season. People of all ages are needed for acting, singing and dancing roles. They also need people interested in production, back stage, lights and sound, and promotion assistance.

The Players are especially looking for a young male lead singer and actor—age 18 to 30—for a production this spring.

Programming Changes on KIKO and KIKO-FM

As of yesterday, KIKO-FM 97.3 has switched to an all comedy format, featuring a mixture of established comedians and newcomers. KIKO-FM's signal covers not only Globe-Miami but also a big chunk of Central Arizona, including the East Valley in the Phoenix metro area.

Oldies lovers will notice an improvement in the music featured after 10:am on KIKO-AM 1340. Instead of playing mostly songs from the 1970's, we're bringing back many more songs from the 1960's and even a few from the 50's.

New Nutrition Standards for School Lunches

The US Department of Agriculture has introduced new nutrition standards that will require schools to add more fruits and vegetables to lunches served through the National School Lunch Program. The rules also set calorie limits and gradually reduce the amount of sodium and trans fat.

The Arizona Republic reports that the changes will be phased in over three years beginning July 1.

The new standards are part of a national focus on childhood obesity and the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

The USDA also wanted to limit starchy vegetables to one cup a week but backed off after potato growers lobbied against it.

Globe PD Message About Burglaries

The Globe Police Department has a message to the public about the recent rash of burglaries in the community. They are working diligently to complete their investigation and bring the suspects to justice.

Globe PD says the elderly are being targeted, mostly after midnignt. There have been several instances of suspects trying to gain entry to the homes of some of our senior citizens, especially those who live alone. The suspects have tried the doorknob and broken windows to see if there is a response inside the house.

If you live alone or if you have elderly relatives who live alone, Globe PD reminds you to take extra caution during these hours. Feel free to call the police if anyone tries to make contact with you at very odd hours. Make it a priority to check on relatives or senior citizen neighbors.

Globe PD says it has several leads that are being followed up on, but they need your help as well. If you are ever afraid for your safety, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1.

Annual Sweetheart Dance on February 11

The Gila County Sheriff’s Reserve Posse Sweetheart Dance will be held on Saturday, February 11 at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

Tucson Republican to Run for CD1 Seat

The Tucson Sentinel reports that Tucson Republican Jonathon Paton has announced that he is running for Congress in the re-designed First Congressional District. The district now stretches from Oro Valley—just north of Tucson—to the Utah Border.

Paton is a former state legislator who will possibly face former state Rep. Bill Konopnicki and former Corporation Commissioner Gary Price in the Republican primary.

Payton served in the Arizona Legislature from 2004 to 2010. He ran for Congress in District 8 in 2010, but lost the GOP primary to Jesse Kelly, who lost to Gabrielle Giffords in the general election.

After Paton left the Legislature to run for Congress, he lobbyed for the payday loan industry.

Former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick and Wenona Benally Baldenegro will run in the Democratic primary for Congressional District 1.

Current District 1 Congressman Paul Gosar has announced that he is moving from Flagstaff to Prescott to run in the newly aligned Congressional District 4.

Last night Globe Police arrested 42 year old Ralph Francisco for criminal trespass after a disturbance at a business on Highway 60.

58 year old Rhodella Smith was arrested for shoplifting at a business on North Broad Street.

Officers responded to a burglar alarm at a business on Highway 60. They found that the window to the business was broken. The case is under investigation.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of a washer and dryer, water heater and other items from a residence on Morrow Avenue. They are also investigating damage to a door at the Gila County Courthouse.

Miami Senior Center Will Celebrate Arizona's Birthday on February 14

February 14 is the 100th anniversary of the state of Arizona. Celebrations will be taking place throughout the state.

On that day the Miami Senior Center will have live music by Jose Sanchez and the Blue Diamond Band. Music will start at 11:am, followed by lunch.

The Center is also bringing back an old tradition of crowning the King and Queen.

Everybody who comes into the Center for lunch between now and February 14 can make nominations by placing your ticket in a jar on the table where you sign in to eat.

The Miami Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:am until 2:pm. Anyone who needs a ride to and from the Center can call 473-4190.

Lane Closures on South Broad Street

The City of Globe announces lane and road closures on South Broad Street due to the repairs of a damaged transformer pole.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane today (Tuesday) until 4:pm.

On Wednesday traffic will possibly be restricted to one lane periodically throughout the day.

Both lanes on South Braod Street will be closed beginning Thursday night at 8:pm, continuing until 5:am.

There will be police officers and barricades set up to help direct traffic.

Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' Barred from Arizona Schools

Arizona is once again getting national attention for its politics. Salon.com and the Wall Street Journal report that William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is among the books that are now barred from Arizona classrooms.

The new law banning ethnic studies has forced the Tucson Unified School District to terminate its 13 year old Mexican-American Studies program rather than lose millions of dollars in state funding. One of the program’s former teachers says she asked if she could start teaching “The Tempest.” She was told no, because of its themes of colonization, enslavement and racism.

Another book that has been removed is “Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years,” which includes an essay by award-winning Tucson author Leslie Silko. The book’s editor Bill Bigelow says the only other time one of his books was banned was when the apartheid government in South Africa banned a book that included a speech by Nelson Mandela.

The Tucson Unified School District has responded by saying that the books that were removed from the classroom are still available in the District’s library system. The statement also says the books will be considered for possible use in the 2012-2013 school year.

Annual Antique Show on March 10-11

AAA Arizona says that Arizona drivers are currently paying a little more than $3.32 a gallon. That’s an increase of about 3 cents from last week. The nationwide average is just under $3.38 a gallon, a drop of less than a penny.

Here in Globe-Miami, the average fuel price is around $3.35 a gallon.

Price Errors Favor Arizona Customers

The latest test of the scanners used in Arizona stores shows that customers are more likely to benefit from mispriced items than pay too much for them.

The Arizona Republic reports that the annual test by the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures found that retailers undercharged customers more than $21,000, compared with overcharges of around $6,000.

A random test of more than 46,000 items in 2,600 stores showed nearly 1,400 undercharges in favor of the customer.

Freeport McMoRan 4Q Profits Drop

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold said today (Thursday) that its fourth-quarter profit dropped 59% as gold and copper production both declined.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that the company posted a profit of $640 million, or 67 cents per share. That’s down from $1.55 billion, or $1.63 per share for the same quarter last year.

Revenue dropped 26% to $4.16 billion from $5.6 billion.

Freeport-McMoRan says the drop is mainly due to labor disruptions and the temporary suspension of operations in Indonesia because of pipeline damage.

The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service has extended the deadline for producer applications for the Conservation Stewardship Program. The deadline is now January 27.

The Conservation Stewardship Program is a voluntary incentives program that rewards farmers, ranchers and forestry producers for conservation efforts that provide environmental benefits beyond their farm or ranch. The program pays producers for clean water, better soil management, improved habitat, energy efficiency and other natural resource benefits.

Proposed Bill Would Allow Public Schools to End Free Lunches

A state Senate panel has approved a bill that would let schools opt out of the federal program that offers free and reduced price lunches for needy students.

The East Valley Tribune reports that Sen. Rich Crandall of Mesa believes that the decision of whether or not to participate should be left to local school officials. Crandall says some districts may decide to continue to offer the meals, but on their own terms. Other schools may drop the program entirely.

Arizona Education Association lobbyist Jennifer Loredo says that for a lot of Arizona students, the lunches are the only quality meals they get.

The Senate Education Committee approved the bill by a 6 to 1 vote. It now goes to the full Senate.

Wikipedia and Other Websites Plan 'Blackout' on Wednesday

Wikipedia has announced that it will black out the English language version of its website on Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation in Congress. It will shut down access from midnight Eastern Standard Time (10:pm MST) Tuesday night until midnight Wednesday.

Critics of the proposed legislation say it goes way beyond cracking down on the sale of pirated US products. They say the language of the two similar bills in the House and Senate restricts freedom of speech, creativity and innovation. They also say that eventually only those with the financial resources to fight legal challenges would be able to speak.

The Reddit and Boing Boing websites are also planning to blackout their services on Wednesday. Many other tech companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter are also strongly opposed to the legislation, but they are not participating in the blackout.

The White House has also expressed opposition to parts of the proposed legislation.

ADEQ Releases Draft for Public Review

Arizona Schools Near Bottom in National Report Card

The Quality Counts national education report issued this week ranks Arizona in the bottom 10 states. The report gave the state a below average grade in student achievement, teacher requirements and state spending.

The state scored above average only on academic standards and assessments. It fell short on the other five categories.

Arizona received an overall grade of C-. It ranked 44th among the states, a slight drop from last year.

Yesterday Miami Police answered a call about a dog bite. A pit bull broke loose from his leash, jumped into another yard and attacked another dog. The pit bull bit both of the owners of the two dogs when they tried to separate them. Tri City paramedics treated the victims. The owner of the pit bull was charged with the violations.

Globe Police arrested 19 year old David Nieto at Globe Education Cneter for use of marijuana and possesion of marijuana in a school zone. He was booked into the Gila County Jail.

APS Bills May Decrease 1 Percent

Arizona Public Service Company customers could see a 1% drop in their average bill this year. If the Arizona Corporation Commission approves it, there will also be no base-rate increases until 2016.

Last June, APS requested a 6.6% rate increase. But low natural gas prices and pressure from consumer groups brought about a better deal for ratepayers.

The Arizona Republic reports that APS has signed an agreement with 20 large customers, consumer groups and other stakeholders. APS agreed to the changes in return for financial incentives for the company to promote energy efficiency. The agreement still must be approved by the Corporation Commission.

Several components of your bill would increase starting next year, but not in the one large increase that APS requested.

Science Daily reports that the findings suggest that it might be useful to screen for vitamin D levels in depressed patients—and perhaps to screen for depression in people with low vitamin D levels. But the study did not determine if increasing vitamin D levels reduces depression.

Low vitamin D levels are already considered risk factors for other medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, certain cancers; and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Last night Tri City, Canyon and Globe Fire Departments responded to a structure fire on Railroad Avenue. It was determined to be an accident. No injuries were reported.

Globe Police arrested two people after a disturbance last night on Hackney Avenue. 47 year old Angela Flores was charged with domestic violence/disorderly conduct. 57 year old Russell Powell was arrested on warrants for child support and burglary.

Officers are investigating a shoplifting report taken at the downtown Safeway.

Judith Jean Hayward passed away Thursday, January 5 at her home in Miami. She was 73. She is survived by her daughters Kim Farley-Johnson and Jamey Farley-Harting; her son Dan Nierdieck of Globe; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for “Cracker” Hayward will be held Thursday at 10:am at Sovereign Grace Baptist Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the High Desert Humane Society.

Gary Allen Davis of Miami passed away Friday, January 6. He was 57. He is survived by his wife Linda; 3 children and 6 grandchildren.

Tonto National Forest Travel Management Environmental Assessment

Tonto National Forest officials are seeking comments on the Travel Management Environmental Assessment.

In 2005, the Department of Agriculture enacted a planning rule to manage motorized vehicle use on national forests and grasslands. This rule requires the Tonto National Forest to designate those roads, trails, and areas that are open to motor vehicle use.

Based on previous public input, several alternatives are proposed in the draft Environmental Assessment. The final product will be a Motor Vehicle Use Map that shows which roads and trails will be open to motor vehicle use. The decision will also amend the Tonto National Forest Plan.

The 30-day comment period began January 6. Comments may be submitted by phone, on the Internet, by email and by postal mail.

Holiday Meal Campaign Exceeds Its Goal

Globe Active Adult Center announces that thanks to your donations - large and small - the 2nd Annual Holiday Meal Campaign exceeded its goal of $8,000. So far they have collected $8853 to support the homebound and disabled in our community.

Each day, Monday through Friday, the Globe Active Adult Center delivers meals to seniors, and the disabled struggling with hunger, through Meals on Wheels. Included with every meal is a wellness check and a friendly chat.

Meal delivery will continue throughout the year, thanks to your help.

Miami Council Meets Tonight

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30. They’ll authorize the Genesis Committee to conduct a Building Tour on March 10 and to use the trolley or Town bus for the tour.

Plaques will be presented to the winners of the Holiday Home Decorating Contest. The first monthly Residential Home Award will also be presented.

The Council may go into Executive Session to consider appointing a Town Clerk or to re-advertise the position. They will also consult with the Town Attorney about litigation with the Barcon Corporation and the Tri City Fire District.

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00. There will be a presentation by Resolution Copper and a request for a Resolution of Support; a Headstart update; and a presentation by the Public Works Director/City Engineer and the Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor.

The Council will consider an Intergovernmental Agreement with the State of Arizona related to manufactured housing installation standards.

And they will consider a Resolution of Support for the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act.

Miami Police arrested 30 year old Joshua Ruff on a Maricopa County child support warrant.

A stolen metal fire place was found at a local recycling shop. The case is under investigation.

Officers are investigating a burglary at the Miami Pepsi plant.

Globe Police arrested 35 year old David Hilker on a failure to comply warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Saturday a juvenile was referred to juvenile probation for assault after a disturbance at Copper Country Mobile Home Park.

35 year old Nikkie Barber was booked and released on a charge of theft.

18 year old Robert Dalgarn was arrested at a traffic stop on a warrant for driving with a suspended license.

46 year old William Salter was arrested for trespassing and an outstanding warrant at a business on Highway 60.

Officers are investigating a burglary at a residence on North High Street.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 55 year old Robert Trostel of Winkelman for disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and aggravated assault.

On Friday a deputy arrested 21 year old Anthony Osborne for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

30 year old Desiree Valenzuela was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for interfering with judicial proceedings.

Deputies are investigating a theft of a bicycle from a residence on McKinney; a burglary at a residence on Woodward Street; a theft from a vehicle at the Claypool Circle K; and a harassment report.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Justin English of Tonto Basin on a failure to appear warrant for possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and misconduct involving weapons.
