Memorial Day Ceremonies

The Town of Miami will have a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday. It starts at 9:am at the park on Sullivan Street in Miami.

The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will have a Memorial Day ceremony at 11:am Monday at Veterans Memorial Park at Globe City Hall. The Womens Auxillary will host a pot luck meal at the American Legion Post immediately following the ceremony.

Diamondbacks Discount for Military and First Responders

The Arizona Diamondbacks have created a discounted ticket program for military personnel and first responders, starting with Monday’s game against the Florida Marlins. It will continue through the remaining nine Sunday home games at Chase Field.

All active, reserve, retired and veteran military personnel as well as any active or retired fire and police personnel can receive a 50% discount for up to four tickets.

The tickets can be purchased at any Chase Field ticket window with valid identification.

Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner June 23

The annual dinner for the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce will be Thursday, June 23 at the Dream Manor Inn. The dinner includes the annual business meeting of the Chamber as well as announcement of the Business of the Year.

Dinner tickets are $20 each and can be reserved by calling the Chamber at 425-4495.

Police Log

Yesterday evening the Gila County Task Force conducted a traffic stop on Highway 60. After a K-9 alert, 42 year old Bryan Ledbetter was arrested for possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Joshua David and 25 year old Okalena David for domestic violence.

23 year old Francis Hartnett was arrested on a contempt of court warrant.

30 year old inmate Adam Garcia was arrested on a contempt of court warrant.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating an identity theft report from a residence on El Camino and criminal damage to a residence on Boyles.

Globe Police arrested 20 year old Alexandria Mabbitt for trespassing at the Globe Communitty Center swimming pool. Three juveniles were also referred to probation for trespassing.

Officers are investigating a burglary at a residence on Linda Vista Drive; a theft at a residence on Lyndsay Drive; and a theft at a residence on Sutherland

The mobile photo enforcement unit will be in the area of Highway 60 and the overpass.

Globe Police Officer Killed in Accident on US 60

The Globe Police Department regrets to announce the passing of Globe Police Officer Matthew Schell. Officer Schell was involved in a fatal single vehicle accident yesterday (Thursday) morning on Highway 60 just west of Superior.

Officer Schell had been with the Globe Police Department since August of 2008.

Monthly Hamburger Fry at 5:30pm Friday

The monthly hamburger fry at the Gila County Historical Museum begins Friday at 5:30pm.

This event is held the last Friday of every month during the summer and fall.

The all-you-can-eat meal is $5 a person.

Free Beginning Computer Classes

Globe Senior Center and the Globe Public Library are offering free Beginning Computer Classes starting Friday at 9:30am. This two session class is an introduction to the computer, Internet and the basic skills required to conduct searches and create an email account.

Friday 6/3 5;30 to 7:pm - Claypool Safeway

The cost is $30.00 a child (15 months to 15 years) for 8 lessons.

Morning classes are from 8:30am until Noon Monday through Thursday.
Evening classes are from 5:15 to 6:45pm Monday through Thursday.

Cenpatico Seeking Grant Applications

Cenpatico of Arizona announces that it is seeking grant applications for Community Reinvestment Funds. Local leaders and community organizations are encouraged to apply.

Cenpatico is the Regional Behavioral Health Authority for Gila and seven other Arizona counties. Under its new contracts with the Arizona Department of Health Services, Cenpatico has committed to giving back a percentage of its after tax profits for community reinvestment. The program will make awards for each of its three Geographical Service Areas.

Previous grants have been awarded for projects like a new family shelter and a water splash park for children.

The deadline to submit a proposal is June 20. A final decision on the grants will be made by July 15.

Miami Fiesta Sub Committee Meets Tonight

The Town of Miami Fiesta Sub Committee meets tonight (Thursday) at 6:00.

The Wastewater Advisory Board Meeting that was scheduled for 4:pm today and the Municipal Property Corporation Meeting scheduled for 5:pm have been postponed until Thursday, June 2.

Nobody was hurt in an accident yesterday afternoon at Daybreak Drive.

49 year old Shirley Hinton was arrested last night for obstructing justice.

22 year old Ashley Henry of Wadsworth, Nevada was arrested for criminal damage to a residence on Apache Street.

A juvenile was referred to probation for shoplifting at the Globe Safeway.

Officers are investigating an attempted assault at a business on North Broad Street.

Copper Basin Coalition Meets Thursday

The Copper Basin Coalition’s monthly meeting is Thursday from 12 until 1:pm at the Chamber of Commerce.

Anyone concerned about youth in the community doing drugs, underage drinking, teen pregnancy, and domestic violence due to substance abuse is invited to attend.

Refreshments will be served.

Juggler to Perform at Globe Library

Miami Library Closed Wednesday

Miami Memorial Library is closed today (Wednesday). The staff is attending a Gila County Librarian Meeting in Young.

Police Log

Canyon and Tri City Fire Departments responded to a brush fire yesterday afternoon on Highway 188 at MP 224. Tonto Forest personnel, Salt River Project and the Department of Public Safety also assisted.

Tri City Fire Department responded to a fire in the pump house at the Freeport mine. The fire was controlled and there was no further damage.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident around noon at Russell Road and Hope Lane.

No injuries were reported in another accident during the noon hour at Broad and Oak Street.

Miami Police arrested 34 year old Randy LaRue for disordertly conduct/domestic assault.

Globe Police are investigating a report of criminal damage at a business on North Broad Street.

Gila County Sheriff’s office took a report of an incorrigible juvenile who left a residence in the Grover Canyon area. The juvenile was entered into the state criminal computer as a runaway.

Deputies are also investigating a domestic dispute on Wilson Street.

Globe PD says the mobile enforcement unit will be in the area of Highway 60 and the overpass.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday

Globe School Board meets Wednesday at 6:pm at Mofford Activity Center. The agenda includes a discussion and possible approval of relocating the Governing Board meetings to the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

The Board will also consider policy changes to adapt to the new four day academic week.

Miami Hostetler Pool Opens May 31

Miami Hostetler Pool’s Grand Opening is Tuesday, May 31. The pool will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:am to 5:pm.

General admission is $2. Season passes are available at Miami Town Hall for $50 a person. Children 5 and under are admitted free and must be accompanied by an adult.

Pool rental fees are $65 an hour for a standard sized party. The cost for larger parties is negotiable.

One person received minor injuries from a two vehicle accident yesterday morning on Jess Hayes Road.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Daniel Gutierrez for domestic violence, disorderly conduct and criminal damage.

21 year old Matthew Miller was arrested for domestic violence disorderly conduct, assault, and false reporting to law enforcement in connection with an incident at Alhambra Mobile Home Park.

22 year old jail inmate Jacob Napolitano was served a warrant for failure to comply on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Gila County Task Force arrested 22 year old Burton Yazzie on warrants for liquor to a minor and disorderly conduct-fighting.

Deputies are investigating harassing phone calls to a residence on Pinal Canyon Road and threats to an employee at the Gila County Courthouse.

Globe Police arrested 37 year old Robert Rodriquez on a child support warrant.

18 year old Derrick Rust was arrested for fraudulent schemes.

40 year old Annetta Sorenson was arrested for driving with a suspended license and false eporting.

Obituary

Lambert T. Benally of San Carlos passed away Sunday at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was 53. He is survived by 5 daughters; his son; his father; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; and 11 grandchildren.
The wake for Lambert “Tomcat” Benally is Saturday at 4:pm at World Evangelism Revival Center. The funeral is Sunday at 1:pm.

Medicare and Social Security Help at Globe Senior Center

Bess Bennett from Pinal-Gila Council for Seniors will be at Globe Senior Center Tuesday from 8 until Noon to help with Medicare and Social Security questions.

Discussion About Prisons on May 31

Gila County Supervisor Shirley Dawson is hosting a special roundtable discussion next Tuesday, May 31. It starts at 6:30pm in the Supervisors’ Hearing Room at the Gila County Courthouse. This discussion will be devoted solely to the proposed private prison issue.

The discussion will last one hour and those who attend should sign in and indicate if they wish to speak. The time allocated to each speaker will depend on how many people wish to speak.

Globe Pool Opens May 28

The City of Globe Community Pool will be open May 28 through August 1. Hours for open swimming will be Noon to 5 every day. Lap swimming will be from 5 to 6:pm Monday through Friday.

Admission is $2 for ages 13 and over, $1 for ages 2-12, and children under 2 are admitted free.

Miami Council Meets Tonight

A Miami Town Council Special Meeting will be held tonight (Monday) at 6:30. The agenda includes a letter to the USDA supporting grant and loan applications by the Tri-City Wastewater Sanitary District.

The Council will consider approving a railing along the sidewalk in front of the YMCA building, and making the area in front of the sidewalk a no parking area.

The Council will also consider an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance to enable the possibility of a Medical Marijuana dispensary in Miami by decreasing the required separation distances from residential zoning districts and churches.

Nobody was hurt in a hit and run accident yesterday at Pine and Bailey. One driver was cited.

Last night Globe Police arrested 39 year old Michelle Gilmore for aggravated DUI.

On Saturday 30 year old Adam Garcia was arrested in connection with a case of shoplifting from Walmart that occurred earlier in the week. Garcia was charged with felony shoplifting, organized retail theft, removal of a detction device and trafficking in stolen property.

36 year old Kimberley Sutton was arrested for domestic violence assault after a disturbance in Copper Country Mobile Home Park. 44 year old David Sutton was also arrested for disorderly conduct.

21 year old Joseph Gomez was arrested Saturday for extreme DUI, possession of marijuana, use of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Gomez had already been cited on Friday night for extreme DUI.

37 year old Tawnya Calvillo was arrested on a child support warrant.

Officers are investigating an assault that ocurred in the Walmart parking lot; criminal damage to a fence at Globe Cemetery; shoplifting at the Claypool Safeway; a report of a runaway juvenile; and a theft at Walmart.

Department of Public Safety in Flagstaff arrested 30 year old Lamonica Baylish of Globe on a warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Navajo County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30 year old Derek Polk of San Carlos on a failure to appear warrant for shoplifting.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office in Payson arrested 20 year old Jacob Conrad of Globe on a failure to comply warrant for criminal damage.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a delayed report of a domestic disturbance in the area of Russell Road and a domestic incident that occurred on Wilson Street.
