Police Log

There was a hit and run accident late Wednesday night on Apache Hills Lane. The car was located and towed and the case is under investigation.

A car ran into a home on Glendale Avenue yesterday morning and left the area. That case is also under investigation.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 65 year old John Knight at Pueblo Heights Mobile Home Park after threatening family members with a gun. Knight was charged with domestic violence/assault and disorderly conduct involving a weapon.

24 year old William Stanley was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence after a disturbance on Braley.

Globe Police arrested 41 year old Waylon Rogers for domestic violence after a disturbance on Euclid Avenue.

Last night a Globe Police Officer conducted a field interview with 24 year old Vincent Doss. During the interview Doss gave a false name and then fled on foot. He was apprehended and identified a short time later. Doss was arrested for an outstanding warrant and for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers responded to a call about suspicious activity at a business on Highway 60. They contacted 69 year old Joseph Ramirez and discovered that he had outstanding warrants for possession of dangerous drugs and criminal trespass.

24 year old Orlando Tuffly was arrested for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

43 year old Troy Burns was arrested at a residence on South Six Shooter Canyon Road for violating an order of protection.

A criminal damage report was taken in the area of Hospital Drive.

Ice Cream Social

St. John’s Church is hosting an ice cream social today (Friday) from 5 to 7:pm The community is invited.

Proceeds will help St. John’s Outreach program.


Obituaries

Alfred S. Ortiz, Sr. passed away Sunday. He was 59. He is survived by his sons Tim and Alfred Ortiz, Jr.; his father Ben Ortiz; his brother and 3 sisters.
Rosary for Alfred Ortiz, Sr. is tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:30am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Mass is at 10:00.
A reception follows the Mass.

James Roy Sterr passed away June 3 at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. He was 75. He is survived by his wife Sandra; 2 daughters; 4 sons; his sister; his brother; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation for James Sterr is Monday at 9:30am at Miles Funeral Services Globe.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 1:pm at Safford Union Cemetery in Safford.

Final First Friday Program of the Season

The final First Friday presentation of the season starts Friday at 6:30pm in front of the Bullion Plaza Museum and Cultural Center. Each year they close with an outdoor concert. Tonight’s music is provided by Joe Sanchez and friends.

Bring your own lawn chair and non-alcoholic drink and enjoy a free evening of music.


'Magical Balloon Making Cowboy' at Globe and Miami Libraries

Both the Miami Memorial Library and the Globe Public Library kick off their summer reading programs on Friday with Arizona Rick-The Magical Balloon Making Cowboy.

Arizona Rick will be at the Globe library at 11:am and at the Miami library at 1:pm.


Copper Valley Relay for Life This Weekend


The annual Copper Valley Relay for Life begins at 6:pm on  Friday (June 7) and continues until 8:am Saturday.

The event at Harbison Field includes the survivor walk, team relays, entertainment, food, other vendors and more.

The event honors those who have or had cancer, and  raises funds to help treat and eradicate all forms of cancer.

Globe-Miami Farmers' Market Begins Saturday

You can get fresh produce, herbs and spices, and home baked goods at the Globe-Miami Farmer’s Market. 

It’s from 8 until 11:am every Saturday morning at Veterans Memorial Park in Globe beginning this Saturday (June 8) and continuing until October 5..


Relay for Life Car Wash at Fry's

The local Fry’s store is holding its annual Relay for Life  car wash this Friday from 9:am until 2:pm in the Fry’s parking lot.


This year’s car wash is dedicated to Fry’s late assistant manager Penny Brenton, who lost a battle with cancer a few months ago.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon in the area of Ice House Canyon and Albany. But 51 year old Garin Weaver was arrested on a contempt of court warrant for disorderly conduct.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25 year old Christian Garcia at Community Bridges on a failure to comply warrant for disorderly conduct/fighting.

Globe Police arrested 34 year old Jessica Lara of Casa Grande for disorderly conduct at a business on Baseline Spur.

Officers took a criminal damage report at a business on North Broad Street.

'Songs of Gila County' is the Next Miami Hardscrabble Presentation

The next program in the Miami Hardscrabble series is “Songs of Gila County.” It’s at 6:30pm on Wednesday, June 19 at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

Miami Memorial Library Summer Reading Program

The Miami Memorial Library starts its Summer Reading Program this Friday at 1:pm with Arizona Rick, The Magical Balloon Making Cowboy.

Applications for the Miami Library’s summer program are available at the library.

The summer program starts Wednesday, June 12. It will run for six weeks until July 19.

On Wednesdays from 2 to 4 there will be a program for school aged children with stories, games, reading prizes and snacks.

Thursdays from 2 to 3 is Story Hour with stories and treats for preschoolers.

Fridays at 2:pm will be “Movie Day” with cartoons, a children’s movie and popcorn.

Police Log

Last night  Gila County Sheriff’s deputies and medical personnel responded to a report of an accident in the area of Ice House and Albany. When they arrived there was no one on the scene and the car was in the creek. A utility pole was damaged and wires were on the vehicle. APS was contacted and the case is under investigation.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 55 year old Rebecca Hinton for organized retail theft.

43 year old Christine Grinder was arrested yesterday for theft.

Officers are investigating shoplifting at a business on Highway 60

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage at a residence in Four Star Mobile Home Park.


Obituary

Former Globe-Miami resident Juanita Hernandez passed away Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is survived by 3 children and 7 sisters.
Funeral arrangements for Juanita Hernandez will be announced.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday

The Globe School Board meets Wednesday at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.


Freeport Mine Shut Down in Indonesia

The Indonesia government has ordered the Freeport Grasberg mine to halt production while it investigates recent fatal accidents.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Big Gossan underground training facility collapsed on May 14, kiling 28 workers. A truck driver at the mine died on Saturday, a day after  he was injured when liquid ore flowed into his vehicle.

The mine produces around 220,000 tons of ore a day.

Miami Police arrested 38 year old Eric Holiday for arson and conspiracy.

48 year old Vincent Barcon was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy took a report of a burglary on Wesson Dr.

Globe Police are investigating a domestic disturbance that occurred on Linda Vista Drive; a report of vandalism on North Escudilla Street; and a theft on Ruiz Canyon Road.

Supervisors Meet Tuesday

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets Tuesday at 10:am.

They’ll consider a letter of support to be attached to a grant application to the US Department of Labor for about $1 million of funding for Gila Community College.

The agenda also includes a Resolution accepting Russell Road as a public road to be maintained in the Gila County Maintained Roadway System.


Meals on Wheels Volunteers Needed

The Globe Active Adult Center is looking for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors and the disabled. It takes about two hours once a week or twice a month.

Free Programs at the Globe Public Library

Globe Public Library needs your help to prepare for their summer reading program. If you would like to help decorate, drop by during normal business hours.

The Summer Reading Kick off is this Friday at 11:am with Arizona Rick the Magical Balloon Making Cowboy. Arizona Rick has entertained audiences all over the state with his fantastic balloon creations for 17 years.

The Summer Reading Program begins Wednesday June 12 at 10:am. Registration forms are available at the library front desk. For more information call the library at 425-6111.


Police Log

Miami, Globe and Canyon Fire Departments  responded to a structure fire late last night on Merritt Street. The Globe Fire Detective is investigating the fire as intentional. No injuries were reported and the case is under investigation.

A motorcycle driver was flown to Scottsdale Osborne hospital where he died of injuries suffered during  an accident on Highway 60 and Latham Blvd, in Miami. Witnesses told Miami PD that the motorcycle crossed into the oncoming traffic lane. The accident is under investigation.

The driver of an ATV was flown to a Valley hospital after an accident yesterday around noon in the area of Arbor and Cherry Avenue in Globe.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning in the area of Ash and Pinal Streets. 32 year old Bercenita Tsosie was arrested for DUI and both vehicles were towed.

Miami Police arrested 33 year old Richard Spurgeon for sexual abuse with a minor.

36 year old Jean Phillips was arrested by Miami Police for disorderly conduct.

Last night Globe Police arrested 25 year old Terrell McCallum at a business on Baseline Spur for disorderly conduct and threats and intimidation.

Officers are investigating a stolen vehicle taken from a residence on Linda Vista; a delayed assault report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center; and criminal damage at a residence on Blake Street.

On Saturday, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 47 year old Kelly Licano for possession of a drug for sale, possession of a narcotic, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

22 year old Jose Dorame was arrested for possession of narcotic drugs.

Friday night a Gila County Sheriff’s deputy contacted a man who was going through the trash at the Juvenile Detention Center. The man assaulted the deputy and was arrested  for aggravated assault on a police officer and for drug charges.

25 year old Justine Robertson of Peridot was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for shoplifting.

Deputies are investigating a report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center about a man who was shot in the arm; a theft at the Claypool Circle K; a report of harassing phone calls taken at a residence on Franklin; and criminal damage to a vehicle on Mountain View.

Apache Junction Police arrested 32 year old Daniel Toscano on a probation violation warrant for aggravated assault/domestic violence.



Chip Sealing in Central Heights


The Gila County Roads Department will be chip sealing the roads in Central Heights this week. They ask that you make sure that all cars and trailers are removed from the streets between 6:am and 5:pm on the day of the chip sealing in your area.

Chip sealing will take place on:

Tuesday, June 4 in the area of Hunt and Campbell, Monroe Place, Upper Glendale, and McKinney Avenue

Wednesday, June 5 on Eddy Street, Central Avenue, Hill Lane, Glendale Avenue, and Apache Street

Thursday, June 6 on Randall Avenue, Barley Street, Short Avenue, and Main Street.

Obituary

Lloyd Reynolds of Globe passed away Friday. He was 80.

A Memorial Service for Lloyd Reynolds will be held Wednesday at 11:am at Lamont Mortuary.
