Congressman Ed Pastor to Retire After Current Term

Arizona Congressman Ed Pastor has announced that he will retire after he completes his current term.

Pastor was born in the Globe-Miami area and has served in Congress for 23 years.


Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 34 year old Bert Ford IV for child abuse.

31 year old Edward Brown, Jr. was arrested yesterday afternoon for disorderly conduct at a business on North Broad Street. A short time later it was determined that Brown was the suspect connected to criminal damage at a residence on Cedar Street.

Two people were arrested last night after a domestic dispute at a residence on North Main Street. 21 year old Lacey Teeter and 59 year old Darlene Nowlin-Goss were charged with domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 22 year old Steven Lopez for possession and use of  a dangeerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a child support warrant. 28 year old Adam Lopez was arrested on a child support warrant, driving with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Children's Book Giveaway on Saturday

The Gila County Reading Council is hosting a book giveaway on Saturday from 10:am until 2:pm at the Claypool Safeway.

More than 300 books will be given away to babies through 6th graders. Children must be present to select a book of their choice.


Highway 60 Cleanup on Saturday

The Globe Clean and Beautiful Committee’s community clean up of Highway 60 starts Saturday at 7:30am at the Claypool baseball fields.

Globe Library Celebrating Dr. Seuss's Birthday

The Globe Public Library is celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Friday (February 28). 

Mr. Nature’s Music Garden will be there at 2:pm. The celebration will continue with birthday cake and arts and crafts from 3 to 5:pm.

Basic Internet Classes During March

The Globe Public Library will be providing free basic Internet classes every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30pm during March, beginning March 5.

Police Log

Last night Globe Police arrested 48 year old Jeffrey Shirey for domestic violence and violation of a court order.

25 year old Derilyn Cassadore was arrested for aggravated DUI at a traffic stop early this morning. Three passengers were arrested for open container.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 28 year old Gabriel Flores on a failure to appear warrant for driving with a suspended license.

55 year old Terry Gilbert was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for false reporting to law enforcement.

Obituaries

Former Globe resident Carolyn Smithson Beydler passed away February 25 in Mesa. She was 74.
Memorial services for Carolyn Beydler will be private.

Beverly Ann Russell passed away February 22 at University Medical Center in Tucson. She was 39.
Visitation for Beverly Russell is Saturday (March 1) at 6:am at the Russell residence in San Carlos. The funeral is at 9:am.

AARP Expanding Its Fraud Awareness Program

AARP Arizona is planning to expand its fraud education program beyond Maricopa and Pima counties. 

Their Community Educators Program uses trained volunteers to give presentations to communities and organizations.

Public News Service reports that the AARP Fraud Watch Network features a website, FraudWatchNetwork.org. Those who sign up receive regular fraud alerts, along with tips about how to avoid being victimized and other resources.

AARP Arizona is looking for volunteers to expand its presentations throughout the state. If you would like to volunteer to be a presenter or to request a community presentation, call the AARP state office at 1-866-389-5649.



Lobbying Firm Quits GCC and EAC

The lobbying firm that has been representing Gila Community College before the state legislature has announced that it is no longer working for GCC or for Eastern Arizona College.

The Payson Roundup reports that this was prompted by a controversy about a bill that would allow provisional community colleges like Gila Community College to receive the same workforce development funds that regular community colleges receive. The bill is opposed by all of the community colleges in Arizona, including Eastern Arizona College.

This created a conflict of interest for the Triadvocates lobbying firm because it represented both GCC and EAC.

Eastern Arizona College provides accreditation and administrative services to Gila Communnity College.


GUSD 'State of the District' Address

Globe Unified School District Superintendent Jerry Jennex will present his Second Annual “State of the District” address this afternoon (Wednesday) at 4:30pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

Yesterday morning Globe Police arrested 19 year old Joseph Stevens on a failure to appear warrant for threats and intimidation.

24 year old Corina Smith was arrested late last night for DUI.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 52 year old Scott Bullman on a warrant for kidnapping, criminal damage, criminal trespassing, and threats and intimidation.

Obituary

Janice Cobb Starr passed away February 21 at her home in Peridot. She was 61.
Visitation for Janice Starr is Friday (February 28) from 1 to 4:pm at Lamont Mortuary. A second visittation will be held on Sunday (March 2) at 1:pm at San Carlos Miracle Church. The funeral follows at 2:pm.

Globe School Bus Driver Fired for Fraud

The Globe Unified School District has fired a school bus driver. A Globe Police investigation confirmed that Eddie Darnell defrauded the district. The district’s press release does not specify the type of fraud.


When Darnell was arrested he was also found to be in possession of illegal controlled substances.

Regional Science Fair Wednesday at Bullion Plaza

Gila County students will compete tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Regional Science Fair at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum. 

Judging starts at 8:am. The doors will open to the public at 3:pm.

Winners will compete at the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair from March 31 through April 2 at the Phoenix Convention Center.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 25 year old Roy Westbrook in connection with a theft at a business on Highway 60. Westbrook also had an outstanding warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Mesa Police arrested 27 year old Margaret Randall of San Carlos on a warrant for aggravated assault.

Damiana “Tita” Rascon Lopez passed away Sunday at her home in Claypool. She was 92.
Visitation for Damiana Lopez is Friday (February 28) at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Lifetime Miami resident Fred V. Lopez passed away February 21. He was 77.
The funeral for “Lico” Lopez is Saturday (March 1) at 3:pm at Bulman Miles Funeral Services in Miami.

Globe Police arrested two people  yesterday afternoon following a domestic disturbance on Linda Vista Drive. 42 year old Shannon Phillips was charged with domestic violence/assault and a warrant for driving with a suspended license. 57 year old Crystal Hunter was arrested on a Yavapai County warrant for aggravated assault.

57 year old Douglas Chase was arrested at a traffic stop last night for DUI.

20 year old Antonio Cervantes of Cornville was arrested for assault on Saturday at a business on Baseline Spur.

On Friday, an officer arrested 18 year old Izak Morales  and a juvenile in connection with a previous criminal damage incident at the state park. Morales was charged with criminal damage and the juvenile was issued a referral.

21 year old Guy Garlinghouse was arrested Friday night for DUI.

25 year old Alexander Juvera was arrested on warrants for disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia, assault, possession of marijuana and burglary.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Destry Phillips on a failure to appear warrant for driving with a suspended license.

20 year old Darie Roehm was arrested Friday for domestic assault.

Phoenix Police arrested 35 year old Maro Taliman of San Carlos on a failure to comply warrant for criminal damage.

Mesa Police arrested 26 year old Michael Miller of Globe on a warrant for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The Department of Public Safety arrested 23 year old Porfirio Figueroa of Miami on a child support warrant.


Obituary

Marvina Charlene Mull of San Carlos passed away February 20 at Hospice of the Valley in Mesa. She was 40.
The wake for Marvina Mull will be held Friday (February 28) at 4:pm at the Mull residence. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm at San Carlos Miracle Church.



Miami Council Meets Tonight at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

The Council will consider a lease agreement with Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum; Rules and Regulations for Miami Parks, including no smoking regulations; and directing Town staff to draft an ordinance amending the Town Code to include a section on Street Excavations and Restoration.



Globe Council Meets Tonight at 6:00

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday)  at 6:00.

The Council will consider a Resolution urging the Governor and State Legislature to restore HURF distribution to cities, towns, counties and state highways; applications for an Early Literacy Reading Grant and a Library Services Technology Grant; a grant application to the Arizona Department of Homeland Security to purchase equipment for the Globe Police Department; and the purchase of a meter reading system.

Action items include: adopting the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; adopting the City of Phoenix Traffic Barricade Manual with City of Globe Amendments; and an application to the Arizona Commerce Authority for a grant that could fund the sewer line extension into the northeast areas of Globe.
