Globe Council Meets Monday
Globe City Council meets Monday night at 6:00. They’ll consider raising the property tax and authorizing a grant application to the US Justice Department for bullet proof vests for the Globe Police Department.

Larry LaVerne Copeland, Sr. of Queen Creek passed away Tuesday. He was 61. He is survived by 7 children, including Danielle Gardner of Globe and Larry Copeland, Jr. of Roosevelt.

Lane Restrictions Continue on US 60
Intermittent lane closures on US 60 will continue through next week. Crews will be doing electrical work on traffic signals at Kings Ranch Road, Mountainbrook Drive and Superstition Mountain Drive. Work will be from 5:30am until 3:30pm next week, Monday through Thursday.

Arizona Still Has Lowest Gas Prices
Gasoline prices in Arizona are pretty much the same as they were last week. And for the fourth week in a row, Arizona’s gas prices are the lowest in the country.
AAA Arizona says the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular is $3.385, an increase of a tenth of one percent. The nationwide average is a little over $3.70, a decrease of less than a cent from last week.
Globe-Miami prices are around $3.44.

Globe Police Department has issued a correction to this morning’s press release. 32 year old Tony Cruz, Jr. was incorrectly listed as as arrested for burglary. Actually it was 51 year old Tony Cruz, Sr. who was arrested.

Cargill Recalls 36M Pounds of Turkey
The Cargill meat company is recalling 36 million pounds of turkey as a result of the salmonella outbreak reported this week. The US Agriculture Department and Cargill announced Wednesday evening that the company is recalling fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at the Springdale, Ark. Plant between February 20 and August 2.
AzFamily.com reports that all of the packages recalled include the code “Est P-963.” But the packages were labeled under many different brands, including Honeysuckle White, Safeway and Kroger.
Cargill officials say all ground turkey production has been suspended at the Springdale plant until the exact source of the contamination is determined.
One death and 76 illnesses have been connected to the salmonella outbreak, including two illnesses in Arizona.

Head Start Registration Going On Now
Local Head Start programs are now enrolling children for classes that begin this month. The program is free for low income families, and for children with special needs regardless of family income. Foster chidlren qualify, and children from families receiving SSI Disability or TANF also qualify. The programs also provide nutritious meals and snacks.
To enroll, families need to bring the child’s immunization record, birth certificate and proof of income to any Head Start Center.

Copper Valley Academy of Music Registering Students
Copper Valley Academy of Music, in association with the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts, is now registering students for fall music classes. The fall semester begins the week of August 15.
The Academy is located in the Old Courthouse building in downtown Globe. There is a variety of classes and private instruction for all ages and musical abilities. Private piano lessons are available as well as lessons for guitar and band instruments.

Las Lomas Open House
Las Lomas Elementary School’s Open House is on Thursday. Parents of children in Kindergarten can meet with teachers at 5:30pm. Meetings with teachers of children in first grade begin at 6:15, and at 7:00 for second graders.

New White House Council Will Focus on Rural Areas
President Obama has established a White House Rural Council to examine issues outside America’s big cities. While the majority of Arizonans live in metropolitan areas, there are a half million people living in rural Arizona.
Public News Service says the council will look for ways to maximize the impact of federal investments, and promote both economic prosperity and quality of life for rural residents.
The new White House Rural Council will be made up of two dozen cabinet leasders, including some from the departments of Labor, Commerce and Transportation.

Nominees should have gained the admiration and respect of students, parents and colleagues, and be active in their community. Teachers may nominate themselves or be nominated by a student, co-worker, principal, school or district committee, friend or family member.
The Arizona Teacher of the Year will be announced in November and will receive $20,000, a laptop computer, meet the President of the United States, and receive a full scholarship to earn a masters or doctorate degree in education at Argosy University. The winner will also compete for the honor of National Teacher of the Year.

Salmonella in Ground Turkey Linked to 1 Death, 77 Illnesses
The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta says that one person has died from salmonella found in ground turkey.
Earlier this week the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert after 77 illnesses were reported in 26 states from consumption of ground turkey products. Examiner.com reports that two cases have been reported in Arizona. The CDC is partnering with state health departments to keep track of the outbreak while looking for the source of the contamination.
The government has not yet issued a recall but is advising consumers to follow package cooking instructions and general food safety guidelines when handling and preparing any raw meat or poultry.

Benefit Art Auction August 18

Police Log
Sewer water backed up into the lower apartments at the Christina Apartments in Miami over the weekend. Miami Police and Fire Departments along with Miami Town employees assisted the complex manager with the problem. At least three tenants with their families had to be placed in hotels.
Tables, benches and walls at the Miami Park were vandalized over the weekend. Miami Police detained five juveniles. The investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.
A car was stolen Saturday morning from a residence on Banker Ave. An Attempt to Locate was issued to surrounding agencies. The car was located by a Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy traveling westbound on Highway 60 near Gold Canyon. The driver fled from the deputy but stopped at Idaho Road and fled on foot. The driver was located and arrested and now faces charges in both Pinal and Gila Counties.
Two people were arrested after a domestic disturbance Saturday morning in the area of Hunter Drive and Prospect. 21 year old Jose Dorame and 18 year old Rachel Green were arrested for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

A pedestrian was hit by a car Saturday evening in Kellner Canyon. The pedestrian was treated on the scene for minor injuries.

Deputies are investigating a report of custodial interference at a residence on Pineway and vandalism to headstones at the Central Heights cemetery.

Valley Resident Comments on Globe Photo Radar
On Friday the following comment was posted to the March 30 blog entry Photo Enforcement in Globe Starts April 1:
I live in the valley and travel to Show Low several times a month by way of Globe/Miami. I usually stop in Globe/Miami to have breakfast and/or lunch depending on the time of day. Also trips to Roosevelt lake and the National Monument. Recently I received a photo ticket for allegedly driving 14 miles over the speed limit which is simply not true. I have been driving for more than 50 years and have never had a speeding ticket!
From now on I will simply avoid these two towns and use the route by way of Prescott. I have many friends that also use this route but made it a point to let them ALL know that Globe/Miami has become nothing but a speed trap for outsiders/tourist because the locals know where the cameras are and they are not the ones that will be paying these outrageous fines! All my friends agree and they will no longer take this route and will spread the word. I would have agreed to a $70 or $80 dollars fine to just make it go away, but $210.00 is nothing but highway robbery to say the least. BTW, if they think that they can extort this money from me, they will have to serve me, that is, if they can fine me. A letter in the mail will not due and I have filed it with my junk mail. Miami has become a ghost town and Globe is soon to follow.
