Fish Consumption Advisory

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a fish consumption advisory recommending that people limit consumption of striped bass caught in the southern portion of Lake Powell.

Fish consumption advisories for mercury are still in place for numerous other bodies of water in Arizona, including Roosevelt Lake and Tonto Creek.

The State of Utah has collected and analyzed tissue samples from Lake Powell fish since 2005 for elevated levels of mercury.

The advisory recommends that pregnant women and children under the age of six limit their consumption of striped bass to one 4-ounce meal per month.

Women of childbearing age and children between 6 and 16  should eat no more than two 8-ounce meals per month.

Adult women past childbearing age and men older than 16 should limit striped bass to eight 8-ounce meals a month.

The advisory does not limit the consumption of other fish species or the use of Lake Powell for swimming, boating or other recreational uses.
