Las Lomas New Student Registration


Las Lomas Elementary School is registering students for kindergarten, first grade and second grade.

Registration is Monday through Thursday from July 16 through July 26, 8:am to  3:pm each day.

Bring your child’s birth certificate, up to date shot records and proof of residency.

Children who attended Las Lomas last year do not need to be re-registered.

Monday Globe Council Meeting Includes Public Hearing on Redflex


Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm.

The meeting inludes a Public Hearing about Redflex Photo Enforcement.

The Council will consider retiring Police Department K-9 Dewey and consider an application to amend a Conditional Use Permit to change the location of a Medical Marijuana Facility

The agenda also includes   Intergovernmental Agreements with Gila Community College about Fire Instruction and Globe Active Adult Center classes.

Update on New Fires in Tonto National Forest


Lightning strikes have caused several new fires this week in the Tonto National Forest.

The Squaw Creek Fire, 6.5 miles southeast of Black Canyon City, has now burned 4,000 acres.

The Bartlett Fire, 6 miles northeast of Bartlett Lake, has burned 250 acres.

The Cooks Fire, 12 miles east of Black Canyon City, has burned 178 acres.

The New River Fire, 9 miles southeast of Black Canyon City, is 60 acres in size.

The Orphan Fire, 6.5 miles southwest of Superior, has burned 161 acres.

Patti Wortman Elected to State Bar Positions


Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores announces that Chief Deputy County Attorney Patti Wortman has been elected to serve as the Chair of the Juvenile Law Section of the Arizona State Bar Association. In the coming year she will work with other juvenile lawyers around the state to promote excellence in the practice of juvenile law.

In a separate forum, Wortman was also elected to serve on the executive council of the State Bar’s Public Lawyer’s Section.

Wortman has worked for the Gila County Attorney’s Office since 1990. She has been one of two chief deputies in the office since 2002.

Obituary


Jesse James Walker passed away Thursday. He was 94.
Visitation for Jesse Walker will be Wednesday (July 18) from 1 to 3:pm at Lamont Mortuary.

Police Log


A car hit a pedestrian early yesterday afternoon near Ash and High Street. The driver was cited.

Globe Police arrested 31 year old Jody Murphy for shoplifting at Walmart.

47 year old Arthur Tarango was arrested on a child support warrant.

The owner of a business on Ash Street was cited for selling alcohol without a business license.

Officers are investigating a hit and run accident on Highway 60 and shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

A Gila County Drug Interdictuion arrested 21 year old Renee Bookout for possession of a dangerous drug, possession of a narcotic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. 37 year old Dylan Miles was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

'CARE Fair' to Be Held Friday at the Fairgrounds


The 10th bi-annual Children’s Assistance and Resource Event will be held Friday from 3 to 6:pm at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

The “CARE Fair” provides parents and students with educational material and introduces them to local agencies that provide important student services.

Small Fires in the Tonto National Forest


Several small fires have started on the Tonto National Forest over the last couple of days.

The Orphan Fire has burned 125 acres, 6.5 miles southwest of Superior.

The Bartlett Fire has burned 250 acres, 6 miles northeast of Bartlett Lake.

The Cooks Fire has burned 50 acres, 12 miles east of Black Canyon City.

The New River Fire has burned 5 acres, 9 miles southeast of Black Canyon City.

The Squaw Creek Fire has burned 4-5 acres, 6.5 miles southeast of Black Canyon City.

Miami Meetings Tonight


The Town of Miami Genesis Board and the Fiesta Sub Committee meet this evening (Thursday).

The Genesis Board meets at 6:00. It will discuss and possibly vote to inform the Town Council of the August/September Pride in Miami House.

The Fiesta Sub Committee meets at 6:15. It will consider entertainment for the upcoming Fiesta event, advertising, vendor applications and the Chihuahua Races.

Police Log


Globe Police arrested 36 year old Marcus Pastor of Phoenix yesterday afternoon at a residence on South Third Street. Pastor was charged with domestic violence assault.

A Gila County Task Force Unit arrested 33 year old Patrick McGeough of Mitchell, South Dakota for possession of marijuana and possession of narcotic drugs for sale.

Miami 'Beach' Saturday Night


The Friends of Miami present a Miami “Beach” event Saturday night from 6:30 to 10:30pm at Miami Veteran’s Park. It includes food, fun and live music by the band Jaded.

A barbecue dinner will be served. The cost is $8 at the door.

San Carlos School Clothing Assistance


San Carlos Apache Tribal Social Services is offering clothing assistance for children for the upcoming school year. This is in the form of a $100 gift card to Walmart.

Parents and children must attend a session on Suicide Prevention and Education before receiving the card. 

Children must also be enrolled members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe and be eligible to return to school in the fall. Income requirements must also be verified.

The Social Service staff will be at Burdette Hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 8:am for students in the Peridot District. They will be in the Rice School Auditiorium Saturday mroning at 8 for students in all districts.

Police Log


Globe Police arrested 26 year old Audrey Poeling yesterday afternoon for shoplifting at a business on East Ash Street.  Poeling was also charged with possession of narcotic drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Two people were arrested last night  for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60. 29 year old Vanessa Jordan and 28 year old Yvette Cassadore were taken to the Gila County Jail. Jordan also had four outstanding warrants.

Officers are investigating a domestic disturbance at a residence on Niorth Broad Street and a theft in the area of Hawkins Street.

Obituary


Rocky Miller passed away July 8 at his home in Globe. He was 99. He is survived by his ex-wife Esther; his son; his daughter; 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
At Rocky’s request there will be a celebration of his life instead of a funeral. This will be on Saturday, August 4. A potluck barbecue will be held at 6:pm at First Christian Church.

Trucks to Deliver Girders for New US 70 Bridge


A series of wide-load trucks will deliver 120 concrete girders for the US 70 bridge near Bylas beginning Thursday. The delivery will take place over 15 weeknights.

The new 15-span bridge is being constructed by the Arizona Department of Transportation one mile west of Bylas to replace the existing bridge that was built in 1957.

The deliveries will begin shortly after  midnight on Thursday and travel from Phoenix to Tucson, then from Tucson to Safford and west on US 70 to Bylas.

Motorists traveling on the route are advised to be alert fro slow-moving oversized loads and drive with caution.

The $12.7 million project will feature wider lanes, emergency shoulders and a pedestrian walkway. It is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2013.

Globe Active Adult Center presents Medicare and Social Security information on Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:am.

Ceramics, Bingo and Beginning Spanish classes are offered on Wednesdays.

Alzheimer’s Education and Support begins tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1:pm.


Police Log


A car hit a pedestrian yesterday on Highway 60 just before 6:pm. The pedestrian refused medical treatment. A report was taken by Globe PD.


Miami Police arrested 51 year old Timothy McCullough for threats and intimidation.


Miami officers are investigating a burglary from a mobile home  used for storage in the El Maguey area.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 46 year old Jess Martin for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

25 year old Rayna Zaragosa was arrested for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

Deputies are investigating the theft of a bicycle in the area of Calle De Loma.

Globe Police arrested 42 year old Leoniel Anderson on a failure to comply warrant for assault.

Willie Fred Powell, Sr. passed away July 3 in Phoenix.
A Memorial Service for “Billy” Powell will be held Saturday at 3:pm at Central Heights Baptist Church.

Free 'Local First' Workshops


Two free “Local First” workshops for Globe-Miami businesses are coming up this week.

A Collaborative Marketing workshop will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 7:pm.

Facebook 101 will be on Wednesday from 9 to 11:am.

Both workshops will be at the Freeport McMoRan Training Center on Highway 60 in Globe.

Voter ID Cards to be Mailed Wednesday


Gila County Recorder Sadie Tomerlin announces that new voter identification cards will be mailed to all active registered voters on Wednesday (July 11).

There have been changes to Congressional, Legislative, Supervisorial and College District Lines. Precincts have also changed.

The voter identification mailer also includes valuable information about upcoming election dates, proper voter identification at the polls and  permanent early voting information.

Once you receive your new card,  verify that all information is correct and destroy any old cards.

Globe Council Meets Tonight at 6


Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

There will be a Special Presentation introducing new firefighter-EMT’s Andrew Gatewood and Claudio Rodriguez.

The agenda includes Public Hearings on the property tax levy and the 2012-2013 Budget.

Miami School Board Meets Tonight


The Miami School Board meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30 in the Miami High School Library.

There will be a Public Hearing on the Operating Budget for 2012-2013.

Miami Council Meets Tonight at 6:30


Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

There will be a Public Hearing on the 2012-2013  Budget followed by a vote to adopt the Town of Miami Final Budget.

The Council will also review and possibly approve changes to the Town Council Rules and Procedures relating to residency of members serving on boards, committees and commissions.

Chavez Found Guilty of Kidnapping and Assault


A Gila County jury has found 38 year old James Chavez of Globe guilty of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, theft of means of transportation and aggravated assault.

The jury heard that on the evening of August 27, 2011, the victim was kidnapped in the Claypool area and driven in his own car to a remote location near Wheatfileds, where he was beaten. The victim was held captive for 12 hours and then stabbed. Chavez then drove the victim to El Maguey Trailer Park in Miami,  where the victim escaped and ran towards Latham Avenue and hid on the side of a mountain.

A Good Samaritan found the victim with life-threatening injuries the next morning. Chavez was arrested as he was fleeing down Latham Avenue in the victim’s car.

Chavez will be sentenced on August 12 at 10:am by Judge Robert Duber. In light of the serious nature of these offenses and Chavez’s multiple prior convictions, he is facing a minimum of 10.5 years and a maximum of 65 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Three people were injured in an accident yesterday around noon on Highway 60 near Pizza Hut. Two of the patients were flown to Phoenix area hospitals and the other was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

There was an ATV accident yesterday evening in Pinal Creek.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21 year old Austin Coleman for extreme DUI and hit and run, after a hit and run to several cars was reported in the area of Main Street in Central Heights.

Nobody was hurt in an accident Friday around noon at Sutherland and Maple Streets.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested 47 year old Albert  Tucker yesterday for domestic violence/threats and intimidation.

Globe Police arrested 44 year old Franklin Stanley yesterday for theft, in connection  with an incident that occurred earlier this year.

23 year old Chad Romero was arrested yesterday on a child support warrant.

Three people were arrested Saturday night after Globe Police investigated a report of shots fired. Officers determined that the shot was fired in self defense. 28 year old Erik Gonzales was charged with disorderly conduct and assault. 31 year old Chad Splane was arrested for being a prohibited possessor, and possesion of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia. 29 year old Chad Smith of Phoenix was charged with false reporting to law enforcement.

23 year old Jon Hill was arrested late Friday night for aggravated DUI.

24 year old Demetria Tarango was arrested Friday night in connection with a theft that occurred on July 5.

27 year old David Hayes was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Officers are investigating a theft at a business on East South Street; a hit and run accident on Apache Street;  a hit and run at the Pinal Mountain Apartments; criminal damage to a vehicle on Tremont Street; and criminal damage at Motel 6.

Miami Police arrested 20 year old Solomon Williams for theft.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bad check at Action Pawn.
