Obituaries


Shirley Ann Dawahoya of Peridot passed away July 13 at Copper Mountain Inn. She was 60. She is survived by her sons Gary and Mark Zaye, Jr., Johnny Dawahoya and John Dawahoya, Jr.; her brother; and 4 sisters.
The wake for Shirley Dawahoya is today (Friday) at the Shirley Dawahoya residence. The funeral is tomorrow (Saturday) at San Carlos Lutheran Church.

Carlos Dale Steele of San Carlos passed away June 26 in Peridot. He was 24. He is survived by his sisters Lynette and Reyette Steele, Jovita Alden, Temetria Young and Ivan Hunter.
The wake for Carlos Steele is Saturday at 4:pm at Carol Hoffman’s residence in Peridot. The funeral is Sunday at 8:am.


Crafts for Kids at the Globe Public Library

The Globe Public Library has several craft events coming up. The first one is tomorrow (Saturday) from Noon until 1:pm for children 3 to 6 years old. They’ll be making craft hats.

On Wednesday (July 24) children 9 to 13 years old will be making lanterns out of glass jars from 2 to 4:pm.

On Thursday (July 25), 9 to 13 year-olds will make a robot out of a recycled soup can. That's also from 2 to 4.

And on Tuesday, July 30 from 2 to 4, children 9 and older are invited to bring an old T-shirt to learn how to cut it up and make a bag.

WOTM Rummage and Bake Sale This Weekend

The White Mountain Women of the Moose Chapter is having a Rummage Sale and Bake Sale today (Friday), Saturday and Sunday  at the Moose Lodge in Claypool. The sale is from 8 until 11:am.

Police Log

There was a two vehicle collision with an injury yesterday afternoon on Highway 60. The accident is under investigation.

Nobody was hurt in an accident yesterday morning at the Pinto Valley mine entrance.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 22 year old Hillary Garcia at a business on Highway 60 for organized retail theft.

23 year old Teri Kindelay was arrested for theft at a business on South Hill Street.

A stolen vehicle was recovered yesterday evening at a business on South Jesse Hayes Road.

Officers are investigating a report of domestic violence assault taken at a business on South Hill Street and a theft at Globe Mobile Home Park.

Miami Police arrested 25 year old Brian Toumberlin for unlawful use of means of transportation and probation violation.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21 year old Shawn Sanders of Gilbert on a Maricopa County warrant for possession of burglary tools and drug-alcohol abuse.

22 year old Fedrico Martinez was arrested on a DUI warrant.

40 year old Augustin Calvillo was arrested on a failure to pay warrant for theft.

Deputies are investigating a child abuse report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center and a vehicle theft at a residence on Monroe Place.


Obituaries

Charles Haines passed away July 14 at his home in Globe. He was 63. He is survived by his wife Shirley; his stepfather; his brother; his step-sister; 6 children; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Memorial Service for “Chick” Haines will be held next Saturday, July 27, in the Miami High School Auditorium. A pot luck will follow in the Miami High School Cafeteria.

Amelia Salas Macias  passed away July 14 at her home in Globe. She was 89. She is survived by her sons Danny, Michael and Joseph Macias of Globe; her brothers Manuel, Cruz and Carlos Salas; her sisters Rosa Salas and Belen Monarrez;; 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Visitation for Amelia Macias will be Monday (July 22) at 8:30am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Miami Music in the Park

Miami’s Music in the Park event this Saturday (July 20) features the band “Jaded.”

Wear your most patriotic hat and you may win a prize.

It’s on Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30pm at Miami Veterans Park.


Food on sale during the event includes home made burritos, root bear floats and pucker pickles.

Car Wash to Benefit Yarnell Fire Victims

A benefit car wash will be held on Saturday for Yarnell fire victims.

They will also be accepting donations of clothing and household items for the residents of Yarnell.

The car wash is sponsored by the Globe Unit of the Arizona Department of Corrections, with supplies donated by AutoZone. All funds raised  go to the 100 Club of Arizona, an account set up to benefit the firefighters’ families.

The car wash starts at 8:am Saturday  at AutoZone.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 49 year old Leon Thompson for domestic violence/assault.

41 year old Kenneth Brown was arrested yesterday for organized retail theft.

47 year old Joseph Root and 43 year old Ralph Francisco were arrested yesterday evening for trespassing at a business on South Jess Hayes Road

27 year old Margaret Randall was arrested for trespassing yesterday morning on Jesse Hayes Road.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Justin McClelland on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault on a child under 15.

Deputies are investigating reports of harassing phone calls at a residence on Mapleleaf and at a residence in Little Acres Mobile Home Park.

Miami Police arrested 34 year old Anthony Guerra for driving with a suspended license.

58 year old Benny Zospah of Whiteriver was arrested for public nuisance.

GHS Registration Begins Monday

Globe High School registration begins Monday.

New students and their parents are encouraged to pick up registration information at the main office on Monday through Thursday between 8:am and Noon and from 1 to 4:pm.

Registration times for students will be divided between those with names beginning with A through M, and those with names beginning with N through Z

Seniors begin registering on Monday, July 22.; juniors will register on Tuesday, July 23; sophomores on Wednesday, July 24; and freshmen on Monday, July 29.

Late registration is on Tuesday, July 30.

Trina Lori Blackhair of Bylas passed away July 4 in Peridot. She was 22. She is survived by 4 children; her mother Beverly; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; her grandparents; and her companion Herman Harvey.
The wake for Trina Blackhair is Friday at 4:pm at the Blackhair residence. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm at Stanley Hall in Bylas.

Delbert P. Johnson of Peridot passed away July 12 at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. He was 64. He is survived by 7 children and 2 sisters.
The wake for Delbert Johnson is Friday at 6:pm at Delbert Johnson’s residence. The funeral is Saturday at 9:am at World Evangelism Revival Center in San Carlos.

City Council Candidates Forum

The Democrats of Cobre Valley are hosting a Meet the Candidates forum for City Council candidates today (Tuesday) at 6:pm. The forum will be held in the meeting room of the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce.

This is a non-partisan event and everyone is invited to attend.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a hit and run accident last night on Highway 60.

Globe Police arrested 21 year old Terrison Henry  on a failure to comply warrant for assault.

28 year old Marcus Packard  was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for shoplifting.

Officers are investigating a stolen vehicle from a residence on North Rose Lane and a report of threats and intimidation at a business on Hackney Avenue.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Michael VanMeter on a child support warrant.

Gilbert Police arrested 45 year old John Lyman of Globe on a failure to pay warrant for false reporting to law enforcement.

Prescott Police arrested 31 year old Bryan Harris of Globe on a failure to pay warrant for false reporting to law enforcement.


Obituaries

Juanita Hernandez passed away June 4 in North Carolina. She was 56. She is survived by 3 children and 11 grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for “Jenny” Hernandez will be held Saturday at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30am and Mass is at 10:00.

Thomas Victor Phillips passed away July 13 at his home in Central Heights. He was 86. He is survived by his wife Gladys; his daughters Mary Zeigish and LaDonna  Melcher of Central Heights; his son Allen Phillips of Globe; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Visitation for “Tommy” Phillips  is Saturday at 10:am at River of Life Church. The funeral is at 11:00.


Supervisors Meet Today

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets this morning at 10:00.

There will be a Public Hearing on a Community Development Block Grant application for a proposed housing rehabilitation project and for additional State Special Project funds.

A Public Hearing will also be held on the final 2013-2014 Gila County Budget. The Supervisors will vote on that budget later in the meeting.


GCSO Press Release Correction

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office says there was a typographical error in its July 3 press release that was printed and broadcast by local media.

The July 3 press release said that Dina Benavides was arrested on a contempt of court warrant. 

The press release should have said that 41 year old Gina Benavides was arrested on a contempt of court warrant.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office apologizes for the error and any embarrassment caused to Dina Benavides, her employer or family.

Cobre Valley Institute of Technology Class Openings

Cobre Valley Institute of Technology has openings in some of their central programs, including the popular programs of Fire Science and Cosmetology. Other programs include Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Welding, and Graphic Design.

The programs are offered through a partnership with Gila Community College. There is no cost to the student for these programs except for Cosmetology. But the fees for the Cosmetology program have been significantly reduced.

The programs are open to high school juniors and seniors from Globe, Miami, San Carlos, Hayden and Superior. Classes begin on August 7.

GUSD to Host Inspired Learning Academy

The Globe School Board has agreed to host the Inspired Learning Academy in a pilot program. It will be housed in a currently-vacant wing of High Desert Middle School.

Inspired Learning Academy is no longer affiliated with AZVA and students who registered with AZVA will need to re-register locally.

At this time, registration is limited to students who are not cuirrently enrolled in Globe District Schools. Kindergarten students are welcomed. Enrollment will be capped, and some grade levels will reach their limit before others.

National Korean War Memorial Ceremony

A national ceremony at the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC will honor those who served in the Korean War and commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Armistace that ended hostilities. It will take place on Saturday, July 27.

The national ceremony will be broadcast live at all of the “Pancakes for Patriots” events at VFW posts around the country.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident last night on Highway 60.

No injuries were reported in a two vehicle accident on Highway 60 Saturday morning.

Two people were taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon after a single vehicle accident off Wheatfields Road.

Tri City Fire and assisting agencies quickly put out a brush fire Friday afternoon on Highway 188.

A truck hit a low hanging wire on Morrow Avenue on Friday afternoon. Utility services were contacted for repair.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 23 year old Shadow Beatty of Whiteriver for shoplifting.

41 year old Angel Rosalez was arrested on Saturday for burglary.

31 year old Carlo Tewksbury was arrested late Friday night for DUI.

Officers are investigating a report of harassment taken at a residence on North Main Street; a fraud report taken at a business on North Broad Street; shoplifting at a business on East Ash Street; shoplifting at a business on North Broad Street; and trespassing at a residence on North Main Street.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Penny Puzzi for fraudulently obtaining utility services.

Two people were arrested Saturday night after an assault was reported at a residence on Central Avenue. 31 year old Christopher Uto was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence, threats and intimidation, and false reporting to law enforcement. 27 year old Merci Uto was charged with aggravated assault/domestic violence.

55 year old Gilbert Levario was arrested Saturday on a Pinal County failure to appear warrant for DUI.

21 year old Darren Yazzie was arrested on a Navajo County warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Deputies are investigating a theft at a residence on West Street; an attempted burglary at a residence on Russell Road; and a theft on McKinney.



Globe City Council Meets Tonight

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

There will be a special recognition of the retirement of Globe Police Chief  Lee Kinnard.

Another presentation by Reseed LLC is about the Update to Globe’s General Plan.

The agenda also includes the property tax levy for the next fiscal year and the annual contract with Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens.
