Globe Council Meets Monday

Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm. The Council will consider additions to the fireworks ordinance that prohibit roadside sales of fireworks and require automatic sprinkler systems.

The Council will consider retiring the Globe Fire Department’s Arson K-9 Frank and tranfer ownership of Frank to Joe Bracamonte.

Police Log

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Joseph Spottedtail after a disturbance at Community Bridges on warrants for disorderly conduct.

Deputies arrested 35 year old Ruben Rivera on 8 warrants for driving with a suspended license, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

44 year old inmate Anthony Curtis was served 5 warrants for failure to comply on charges of criminal trespass, disorderly conduct-fighting and domestic violence, and assault.

52 year old Ronald Trujillo was arrested on warrants for disorderly conduct and DUI.

26 year old Roy Romans was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for DUI.

Deputies are investigating a report of criminal damage and theft at a residence on McKinney and a burglary on Cypress.

Globe Police arrested 38 year old Carlos Laborin for trespassing at the Circle K on Santee.

41 year old Daniel Hileman turned himself in to Globe PD on a charge of false reporting to law enforcement.

Officers are investigating a theft at the El Rey Motel and a fight at a residence on East Street.

'Mad Hatter' Class for Kids

The Cobre Valley Center for the Arts is presnting a “Mad Hatter” class for children on Saturday from 10 until 11:30am. It’s being held in conjunction with the Summer Youth Musical Theater production of “Alice in Wonderland.”

The class is a fun time to create your own whimsical hat worthy of the Mad Hatter. It is for ages 5 to 12 and the cost is $3 a child. Be sure to wear an old painting shirt.

'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules'

Friday’s free movie at the Globe Public Library is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. It starts at 2:pm.

Miami Concert in the Park

Miami’s third Concert in the Park starts Friday at 6:30pm, featuring the band Jaded. Barbecue will be sold. Bring your own beverage and chair and enjoy the music.

Tour the Historic Jail This Saturday

The historic 1910 Sheriff’s Office and Jail is open the second Saturday of each month from 9:am until 1:pm for tours and an experience of the Old West.

You are also invited to combine a visit to the jail with the weekly Farmers’ Markets in downtown Globe.

Free Workshops at Globe and Miami Libraries

Globe and Miami Public Libraries have scheduled several more workshops over the next two weeks:

Tonight (Thursday) at 6:30pm, the Miami Library presents Basic Photoshop. This class introduces the use of Photoshop software. A Basic Photoshop class will be held in Globe on Saturday, July16 at 10:am.

This Friday at 10:am the Globe Library will have a class exploring the many resources that libraries offer on the Internet.

Next Thursday, July 14, the Miami Library will have a class on how to use Mango Languages. Mango Languages is an online language-learning tool similar to Rosetta Stone that is free for library patrons, thanks to the Arizona State Library. That class is at 6:30pm. The Mango Languages class will be held at the Globe Library on Friday, July 15 at 10:am.

All of these classes are free, thanks to a grant from the Arizona State Library, the Gila County Library District, and the Friends of the Globe and Miami Public Libraries.

Town of Miami Meetings Today

The Town of Miami Wastewater Advisory Board meets today (Thursday) at 4:pm.They’ll hear an update of the Wastewater Collection System Project and discuss the selection of someone to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Paul Licano.

The Municipal Property Corporation Board of Directors meets today at 5:pm.

The Town of Miami Genesis Board meets at 6:pm today. They’ll discuss and possibly agree on a plan of action for raising funds and preparing the Miami Train Depot for the Copper Spike December 2011 season opening.They will also discuss and possibly agree upon a plan for repairs to the new trolley, and for signage and the use of the new trolley.

Today at Globe Active Adult Center

Globe Active Adult Center is having a presentation today (Thursday) from Arizona Youth Partnership on the proper disposal of prescription drugs. It’s at 10:30am.

Police Log

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51 year old Allan Tolman on a contempt of court warrant on a charge of criminal damage.

Deputies are investigating broken windows and damage to equipment at the Landfill and a report of sexual misconduct involving a juvenile.

Globe Police arrested 20 year old Julio Velasquez in connection with a burglary reported on Tuesday.

Officers are investigating a report of assault and theft taken at a residence on Hill Street.

Former Miami School Superintendent Lawrence Paul Lemons passed away Monday in Mesa. He was 78.
Visitation for “Paul” Lemons will be Saturday at 9:30am at the LDS Church in Mesa. The funeral is at 11:00.

Joseph A. Oddonetto of Globe passed away Monday in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was 55. He is survived by his brothers Peter, David, John and Bill; his sisters Cinder Gardner and Dianne Mensch.
Visitation for Joe Oddonetto will be Sunday at 5:pm at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Rosary is at 6:00. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday at 10:am.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Holy Angels Catholic Church.

Wilson Hoffman of Peridot passed away Sunday at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa. He was 70. He is survived by his son Mitchell; his daughter; 2 brothers; and 11 grandchildren.
The wake for Wilson Hoffman will be Friday at 4:pm at the Hoffman residence. The funeral is Saturday at 10:am at Grace Lutheran Church.

Haskell Walker passed away June 30 at his home in Globe. He was 72. He is survived by his wife Sharon; his daughters Becky Taylor and Crystal Barbee of Globe; 2 sisters; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Visitation for “Gene” Walker will be Friday at 6:pm at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is Saturday at 10:am.

US 60 Lane Closed Near Gold Canyon

The Arizona Department of Transportation has closed one lane of US 60 near Gold Canyon. The eastbound lane of US 60 will be closed for bridge work between mileposts 205 and 207 until Monday, July 18 at 3:30pm. It’s part of a 12 mile reconstruction project from Siphon Draw to State Route 79 near Gold Canyon.

Crews will work from 5:30am until 3:30pm Monday through Friday. The lane closure will remain in place after work hours and during weekends. Westbound lanes on US 60 will not be restricted.

Weimer Guilty on 13 of 14 Counts

Gila County Superior Court Judge Robert Duber has found 38 year old Allen Weimer of Globe guilty of possession of marijuana for sale, transportaion of marijuana for sale, production of marijuana, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and misconduct involving weapons.

Weimer was arrested on March 2, 2010 after Globe Police received information that he was selling marijuana out of his business, Cutting Edge Streetware. When they executed a search warrant, officers found a Tupperware-type dish with individually packaged baggies of marijuana that he had transported from his home to his business. Officers searched his home and found a larger bag of marijuana along with three handguns, four rifles and drug paraphernalia.

Weimer requested a jury trial, but in March of 2011 he chose a bench trial instead. At his trial on June 30, he interrupted the trial to plead guilty to 13 of the 14 counts against him. He was found not guilty on the other count.

Weimer will be sentenced by Judge Duber on August 1. He is eligible for probation but he could receive a sentence of up to 47 years.

Gila County Library District Web Site

Gila County Library District has a new Web site, thanks to a grant from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Recorsds. It’s at www.gcldaz.org.

The site provides access to all the public libraries within Gila County as well as access to museums, numerous online resources supplied by the Arizona State Library and the Gila County Library District, and library friends groups. You can now log on to your library account to renew books and other items, place holds, and search the library catelog.

The grant also makes it possible for the libraries to host computer and Internet classes for the public. These classes teach the basic skills needed to navigate the Internet, including an introduction to the Gila County Library District Web Site and its online resources.

Fish Fire 95% Contained

The Fish Fire on the Tonto National Forest is now 95% contained. The fire has burned a little more than 400 acres.

Officials say the fire was started by lightning near Apache and Canyon Lakes, along the Old Apache Trail.

All Day Kindergarten at Las Lomas

Las Lomas Elementary School is accepting applications for all day kindergarten. Space is limited and students will be placed on a first come first served basis.

When registering, bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residency. You can register from 8:am to 3:30pm Monday through Thursday.

Police Log

Several large trees were blown over in Miami during last night’s storm. Boulders were also brought down from the mountains and upper residential washes. Miami PD says that so far only minor damage has been reported.

The storm also caused some flooding in the Ice House and Kellner Canyon area. Canyon Fire Department placed sand bags to prevent water from moving to nearby residences. The water receded shortly afterward.

A car became stuck in the roadway that was full of debris at Calle De Loma and Railroad Avenue. A Sheriff’s deputy helped move the vehicle and Gila County road crews were called to clear the roadway.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people after a disturbance late yesterday morning on McKinney. 24 year old Kyle Snider was arrested for domestic violence/disorderly conduct and possesion of drug paraphernalia. 22 year old Jessica Serna was cited and released for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

31 year old Phillip Vasquez of Tucson was cited and released for disorderly conduct after a disturbance at the Spring Creek Store.

Deputies are investigating a domestic incident that occurred last night on Noble Drive.

Last night Globe Police arrested 54 year old Randy Wickwire for domestic violence/disorderly conduct after a disturbance on Yuma Street.

Officers are investigating a hit and run accident at the downtown Safeway and criminal damage at a business on Ash Street.

Superior Police arrested 26 year old Brandi Clark of Globe on a failure to comply warrant for possesion of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Globe Water Restrictions Lifted

On Friday the City of Globe issued mandatory water restrictions. Those restrictions have been lifted because the water tank issue has been resolved. However, drought conditions continue and everyone is encouraged to conserve water wherever possible.

Police Log

Saturday night Tri City Fire Department, the US Forest Service, and the Game and Fish Department responded to an ATV accident in the Cherry Flats area. One patient was flown to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital.

On Friday morning Tri City and Canyon Fire Departments responded to a rubbish fire in the roadway on Wheatfields Road. The fire was put out and removed.

A driver was cited for unsafe backing after a two vehicle accident Friday morning on Oak Street.

Last night the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 57 year old Alfred Ortiz and 34 year old Alfred Ortiz, Jr. for domestic violence/disorderly conduct and domestic violence/assault.

On Saturday 22 year old Michael Flores was arrested on a probation violation warrant for theft.

41 year old Walter Sanders of Tonto Basin was arrested Friday for assault and domestic violence.

Deputies are invstigating a report of animal cruelty taken in the area of Spurlock; a report of telephone harssment in the area of Daybreak; a burglary from a residence on Grover Canyon; a theft in the area of Elm Street; and criminal damage at a residence on Highway 77.

Globe Police arrested three people last night during a traffic stop on Highway 60. 22 year old Morrison Little was arrested for aggravated DUI. 44 year old Lynn Morre was charged with possession and transportation of dangerous drugs for sale. 27 year old Terry Victor was arrested for drug paraphernalia.

33 year old Jeanne Harris and 34 year old Eric Harris were arrested for disorderly conduct.

18 year old Natisha Elthie was arrested Saturday for shoplifting at Fry’s.

On Friday 30 year old Roberto Antonio was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence after a disturbance at the Knight’s Inn.

64 year old Bruno Morales was arrested Friday for theft.

44 year old Brenda Gunn and 19 year old Valynda Caraway were arrested for shoplifting at a business on East Ash.

Officers are investigating criminal damage at a residence on Manzanita; criminal damage at a business of Jess Hayes Road;.a report of threats taken at Walmart; and shoplifting at Dave’s Fast Stop

26 year old Eddie Benavidez was arrested for criminal damage/domestic violence and violation of a court order.

Phoenix Police arrested 27 year old Jessica Cosen of San Carlos on a failure to appear warrant on a charge of criminal simulation.

Pima County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Jennifer Curtis of Claypool on a failure to comply warrant on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

July Fourth Celebration Today in Globe

An Independence Day celebration is going on today (Monday) in downtown Globe. The parade begins at 9:am. Stay downtown after the parade for more entertainment and events.

The American Legion Riders are hosting an Old Fashioned Family Picnic at the Community Center at 11:am. There will be fun and games, hamburgers and hot dogs, and pit roasted pig. There will also be music and a motorcycle show. All barbecue proceeds will benftit the local Boys and Girls Club.
