Obituary

James A. Bywater passed away Wednesday at his home in Globe. He was 91. He is survived by his wife Aileen; his son; his daughter Shirley Haines of Globe; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Visitation for James Bywater is tomorrow (Saturday) at 3:pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The funeral follows at 4:00.
The family requests that memorials be sent to The Crossing Hospice in Miami.

Elks Flag Day Ceremony

The Pinal Mountain Elks Lodge honors Flag Day on Friday with a ceremony at 4:pm.

Dinner will be served at 5:30pm following the ceremony.


Wounded Warrior Benefit Ride

The Loners Motorcycle Club and Legion Riders are co-hosting a Wounded Warrior Benefit Ride on Saturday. The ride starts at 2:pm at the Shamrock Bar in Claypool and ends at the American Legion Post.

The cost to participate is $10 or $15 a couple,. There will also be food and raffles.

All proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project.


Republican Club Meets Saturday

The Cobre Valley Republican Club meets Saturday (June 15) at 9:30am at the Globe Headquarters on North Broad Street. They will discuss upcoming events in Globe and information on Gila County activities.

Upcoming Globe Public Hearings

The City of Globe will have its second General Plan Meeting on Tuesday (June 18) at 6:pm in the Globe Council Chambers.

A public hearing on the proposed increase in water and watewater rates and fees will be held on Monday, July 8 at 6:pm.


Globe Library Events

A special program at the Globe Public Library tomorrow (Friday) features a music hour with Mr. Nature and his musical instrument petting zoo.

The library needs items for its summer program. They would like your  recycled pint-size canning jar or tempered glass container, LED tea lights, metal cans, electrical tape, and bottle caps.

Donations may be dropped off at the library during business hours.

GAAC Concert in the Park

This month’s Concert in the Park at the Globe Active Adult Center will honor Flag day with the Globe ROTC on Friday at 5:pm. If you have an old flag, bring it for proper disposal.

Enjoy 50’s music with Gus Park and a surprise guest for free. A meatball sub dinner will be served for $5.


Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a three vehicle accident yesterday morning on North Hill Street.

There was a hit and run accident yesterday evening in the area of Third and Ash.

Last night Globe Police took a delayed report of a domestic disturbance on Birch Street After an investigation officers contacted 47 year old Jeffrey Shirey and charged him with domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

Officers detained two juveniles late last night for underage consumption at a business on Highway 60 and arrested 28 year old Keith Hopkins for disorderly conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

39 year old Marvina Martin was arrested yesterday evening for shoplifting at a business on Hill Street.

An officer took a criminal damage report at a residence on East Maple Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Luis Sanchez on a failure to appear warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.

43 year old Sheryl Robles was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for DUI.

A theft report was taken at a residence on Copper Street.


Obituary

Billy Joe Tarango has passed away. He is survived by 3 sons including Andy Tarango of Globe; his parents Ann Marie and Ralph Tarango; his brother; and his sister Dee O’Neal of Globe.
Rosary for Billy Tarango is Saturday at 10:am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Mass is at 10:30.

Hawaii Day at Globe Pool

The Globe Community Center Pool is celebrating Hawaii Day this Friday (June 14).

The event features limbo, hula contests, watermelon contests and more.

It’s on Friday from 1 to 5:pm.

Admission is $1 for ages 3 to 11 and $2 for ages 12 and up.


Miami Senior Center Serving Free Lunch for Children

The Miami Senior Center is again providing free lunch for children during the summer.

Lunch is served each weekday between 12 and 1:pm.

Benefit Car Wash

A benefit car wash will be held on Saturday for Jenny Hernandez to help her daughters travel back to Globe-Miami for her services.

The car wash is Saturday (June 15) from 8:am until 2:pm at Auto Zone.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning in the area of High and Mesquite Streets.

Two people were arrested after a domestic disturbance yesterday morning on Hackney Avenue. 26 year old Holli Naquin and 18 year old Michael Melvin were both charged with domestic violence/criminal damage.

Last night Globe Police arrested 27 year old Melissa Olvera for domestic violence/disorderly conduct after a disturbance on Mesquite Street.

Officers are investigating criminal damage at a business on South Broad Street and shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

The Gila County Task Force arrested 25 year old Kelly Kazbour of Brandon, Florida and 72 year old Patricia Sinelli of Gold Canyon  for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, transportation of marijuana for sale and cultivation of marijuana.

25 year old Rodney Spotted Elk was arrested on a warrant for aggravated assault.

Gila County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a stolen license plate from a residence on McKinney Avenue and a harassment report taken at a residence on Russell Road.


Obituary

Matthew Allen of San Carlos passed away June 8 at Copper Mountain Inn. He was 82. He is survived by 3 daughters and 3 brothers.
The wake for Matthew Allen is Friday at 4:pm at the McFarland Chatlin residence. The funeral is Saturday at 8:am at San Carlos Miracle Church.


Renzi Convicted of Extortion and Bribery

Former First District Congressman Rick Renzi and his former business partner have been convicted of extortion and bribery  by a federal jury in Tucson.

Evidence showed that in 2005 Renzi used his legislative influence to profit from a federal land exchange that involved property owned by real estate investor James Sandlin.

Renzi threatened a proponent of the land exchange that he would not support it unless they purchased Sandlin’s property in Cochise County.  When that person refused, Renzi made a deal with another proponent of the land exchange.

Yesterday (Tuesday) Renzi was convicted of 17 felony offenses including conspiracy, extortion, racketeering, money laundering and making false statements to insurance investigators.

Sandlin was found guilty of 13 felony offenses.

Sentencing is set for August 19.

Local Libraries Begin Summer Reading Programs

Both the Globe Public Library and the Miami Memorial Library begin their Summer Reading Programs on Wednesday  (June 12).

The Globe Library’s Wednesday program is from 10:am until Noon and is for children going into first through third grades. The Thursday program from 10 until Noon is for children going into the fourth through sixth grades.

The Miami Library Wednesday program is for school aged children and is from from 2 to 4:pm. Story Hour for preschoolers is on Thursdays from 2 to 3. And on Friday at 2:pm the Miami Library will have cartoons, a children’s movie and popcorn.

Hardscrabble Series Season Concludes With Music

The season finale of the Miami Hardscrabble series will be held next Wednesday, June 19  at 6:30pm at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

It’s an evening of music by John Hargett. Hargett is the  grandson of Edward Hargett, better known as “Tamale Joe” in his earlier days.

The program will be held outside if weather permits.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested 37 year old Amytiss Franco and 34 year old Anthony Guerra at a traffic stop on child support warrants.

Deputies are investigating two assault incidents at the Gila County jail.

Globe Police are investigating criminal damage to a vehicle on East Ash Street; a burglary on Prickly Pear Drive; and a suspicious package received at a business on Oak Street.

Carlos G. Abeyta of Miami passed away June 6. He was 88. He is survived by his wife Conchita; 5 children, including Aurura Otero and Manuel Abeyta of Miami; 4 sisters; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Police Log

Last night a Gila County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the area of Salt River Canyon on Highway 60. A man jumped from the falls and could not be located. The case is being investigated.

Local fire agencies responded to a brush fire late yesterday afternoon on Highway 77 at Milepost 159. Highway 77 was closed at the Highway 60-70 junction and the Highway 177-60 junction.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident early Sunday morning on East Ash Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office  arrested 24 year old Johnny Guerrero on warrants for assault and contempt of court.

31 year old Mariette Lewis was arrested on Saturday for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

24 year old William Stanley was arrested on Friday on a child support warrant.

Deputies are investigating possible child abuse in Kellner Canyon; criminal damage at Four Star Mobile Home Park; and a beer run at Circle K.

Miami Police arrested 33 year old Martina Gonzales for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

Miami officers are investigating three burglaries that occurred on the same night. They are believed to be by the same suspects.

Last night Globe Police were dispatched to Ragus Road and Highway 60  where a person was pointing a gun at another driver. A juvenile was contacted and issued a referral.

50 year old Veronica Antonio was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for shoplifting.

19 year old Johnathan Wright was arrested on Saturday for false reporting to law enforcement.

48 year old Fernando Ceballos was arrested late Friday night for DUI.

Officers are investigating criminal damage at a residence on Ash Street and a report of threats taken at a residence on Sunset Drive.

Graham County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28 year old Mario Sanchez of Globe on a failure to pay warrant for DUI.


4-H Volunteer Recruitment Meeting

Southern Gila County 4-H is having a Volunteer Recruitment meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) from 6 to 8:pm at the Gila County Community Services Building on S. Apache. 

If you would like to help the youth in our community, you are invited to attend. You don’t even have to know anything about 4-H. They’ll provide everything you need.

4-H needs adults to lead clubs not currently available.  They offer a wide range of subjects including the arts, forestry, technology, woodworking and more.

One area that is in immediate need of volunteers is the Archery Club. There are currently  45 students enrolled with only one certified adult.

They’ll consider approving a $1 million contract with FNF Construction for Wastewater Collection System Improvements.


Miami School Board Meets Tonight

The Miami School Board meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30 in the Miami High School Library.


Globe Council Meets Tonight at 6:00

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

They will vote to approve the Council Strategic Plan and the Tentative $24 million budget for the next fiscal year.

The Council will consider an ordinance adopting an Access to Care Fee.

The agenda includes updates on water and wastewater implementation and on the Pinal Creek Wash Cleanup.

The Council will consider  a CDBG project contract with the Arizona Department of Housing.

The Above and Beyond Award will be presented to Rosie Mansour and Jim Stiles for exceptional service to the community.

The Globe Firefighters Association will be recognized for constructing the Veterans Memorial Wall in Miami.



Obituary

Globe native Nancy Lou Foerster passed away June 1 at her home in Overgaard. She is survived by her husband David Justice; 2 daughters; her son; and her brother.

A Memorial Service for Nancy Lou Foerster  will be held Saturday (June 15) at 1:pm at the LDS Globe Stake Center.
