Pnerosa Campground Closed Due to Bear Attack


Tonto National Forest officials have announced a temporary closure at the Ponderosa Campground because of a bear attack. The closure is effective until August 31 unless rescinded sooner.

A 74 year old woman received non-life-threatening injuries early yesterday morning when a bear  ripped a hole in her tent and clawed at her.

One person was cited after a two vehicle accident yesterday morning near the AM/PM.

Miami Police responded to a fight between two family members on Miami Avenue. 76 year old Joe Fodera was arrested   for domestic violence/disorderly conduct and threats and intimidation. Three weapons were seized in the incident.

Miami Police arrested 50 year old Shirley Hinton on a warrant for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Globe Police arrested 28 year old Alane Reyes yesterday for aggravated DUI.

50 year old Gerald Torrez was arrested yesterday for shoplifting.

An officer took an assault report late last night at a residence on Copper Street. That case is pending futher investigation. But 18 year old Leslie Neilsen was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

A woman who heard the report of an officers vehicle being damaged Wednesday night told Globe Police  that her car had been damaged about 45 minutes before that incident. A report  was taken and the case is under investigation. Globe PD advises motorists to use extreme caution when traveling in the area of North Broad and Murphy Street.

Officers are investigating a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence on Ash Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Jessica Peace on a child support warrant.

Deputies are investigating a delayed domestic disturbance call in Central Heights.

Obituary


Manuel G. Armendariz  of San Carlos passed away Wednesday. He was 57.
Visitation for Manuel Armendariz will be Thursday (June 7) at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Movie at Globe Active Adult Center

Final First Friday Program of the Season Features Live Music


The final First Friday program of the season will be held tomorrow at 6:30pm at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

Relay for Life Team Fundraiser


The Walmart Relay for Life team is having a fundraiser at the Mineshaft Pizza in Miami on Saturday at 6:pm.

There will be open mike, food, raffles and fun for $5.00 a person.

Register Saturday for AYSO Soccer


Registration for AYSO soccer begins on Saturday. A registration event will be held from 9:am until 2:pm at the Medical Office Building at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. The event includes information about AYSO, a prize for each child, snacks and a raffle of soccer prizes.

The early registration fee is $55, which covers your child’s uniform, insurance, field supplies and administrative fees.

The Globe Public Library is having a benefit car wash for Relay for Life on Saturday at 10:am.

Miami Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program


The Miami Memorial Library kicks off its Summer Reading Program this Friday at 1:pm with a performance by Arizona Rick, the “Magical Balloon Making Cowboy.” It features storytelling, magic and games, all with balloons.

Applications for Miami’s Summer Reading Program are now available at the library. The summer program starts Wednesday, June 6 and runs for six weeks until July 13.

On Wednesdays, there will be a program for school aged children with stories, games, reading prizes and snacks.

The Arizona Story Hour is on Thursdays from 2 to 3, with story time and treats for preschoolers.

And on Fridays at 2:pm there will be cartoons, a children’s movie and popcorn.

Globe Farmer's Market Returns This Saturday


The Globe Farmer’s Market returns this Saturday. You can get fresh produce, herbs and spices, and home-baked goods every Saturday through October 27. It’s from 8 until 11:am at Veteran’s Park in Globe.

Globe Police officers were conducting a routine patrol near Quartz Loop late last night when the right passenger window was shot out. The officers searched the area but didn’t find any suspects. If you have any information about this incident, please contact the Globe Police Department.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning in the area of the Bel Air Motel.

Globe Police arrested 23 year old Bowe Van Meter for disorderly conduct yesterday after a fight in the Walmart parking lot.

Two people were arrested for shoplifting at Walmart.  20 year old Mellissa Francisco and 28 year old Dorothea Delma were booked into the Gila County Jail.

26 year old Rafael Villela was arrested yesterday for theft.

Officers are investigating shoplifting at Kim’s Imports and stolen metal from the ADOT yard.

The Gila Coutny Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage at the LDS Church in Claypool; a stolen ATV from a residence on Walliman Road;  a theft of pills from a residence on Braley; and a theft from the Miami scrap yard.


Obituary


Rebeca Mendoza Martinez of Miami passed away Sunday. She was 78. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Cook, Yolanda Martinez and Annabell Heine; 3 sons including Fred Martinez of Globe;  3 brothers; 2 sisters; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Visitation for Rebeca Martinez is tomorrow (Friday) at 1:30 at Miles Funeral Services Miami. The funeral is at 2:00.

Globe Boys and Girls Club Grand Reopening


The Globe Boys and Girls Club is having its Grand Reopening tomorrow (Friday) from 5 to 7:pm. Find out about the club’s new changes. The club is located at 1435 S. Hagen Road.

They will have music, refershments, games and fun.

The next program in the Miami Hardscrabble series is on Wednesday, June 13. It’s at 6:30pm at the Miami Memorial Library. The presentation by Jane Hale is about local ranching history.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident early yesterday afternoon in the area of Seventh and Monroe Street.

A brush fire was quickly put out around midnight in the area of Jesse Hayes Road.

Early this morning officers were dispatched to a business on Highway 60 after a call about an unconscious woman in the front seat of a running vehicle. The woman was medically evaluated and later taken to the hospital.

Two people were arrested for shoplifting yesterday afternoon at a business on Hill Street. 19 year old Emmanuel Burnette and 50 year old Gerald Torrez were booked, cited and released.

26 year old Vanessa Garcia was arrested at a traffic stop for driving with a suspended license and for an outstanding warrant.

Officers are investigating a hit and run accident at Hackney and Ash; criminal damage to a vehicle at Dave’s Fast Stop; and thefts at Copper Country Mobile Home Park, a residence on Mesquite Street, and a residence on North Collins Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft of copper wire from a utility site off  Highway 60.

Free GCC Classes Start Today at Globe Active Adult Center

The Globe Active Adult Center has several free Gila Community College classes. The Summer Session starts today (Tuesday). Classes include Quilting, Ceramics I and II and Crafts.

Study Concludes Rural Hospital Care Is Just As Good As Urban


A National Rural Health Association report says that the care at rural hospitals is equal to-if not better-than that at urban hospitals.

The Rural Blog reports that the study also found that rural health care is not more expensive than urban care. 

But many rural patients are referred to or voluntarily travel to urban providers based on the myth of better care
.
The study was compiled by Ivantage Health Analysis, a private health-care research company. It collected data on Medicare costs and health outcomes for doctors and hospitals for 12 months and divided the results into rural and urban groups.

Miami Police detained one juvenile after an altercation involving several juveniles and a parent.

Three juveniles were detained by Miami Police  after reports of them throwing rocks and breaking paintballs on several vehicles.

Miami officers were called after a three year old child was seen playing on a residential roadway. Neighbors attempted to contact the parent but did not get a response at the door. The officers arrested 30 year old April Galvan for child neglect and possession of marijuana. Her three children were temporarily placed in a neighbor’s care and Child Protective Services was contacted.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested  19 year old Travis Hanon for kidnapping in connection with an incident that occurred at the Diversion Dam area.

A deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Golden Hill. The driver went into an alley in the area of Braley Street and fled on foot. Deputies were unable to locate the driver in the Central Heights area. The car was towed and a report was taken.

Globe Police arersted 38 year old Ariane Tucker for assault/domestic violence after a disturbance at a residence on Saguarro Drive.

63 year old Thomas Werner was booked, cited and released for DUI after a motorcycle accident on North Broad Street.

43 year old Kristina Nielson was arrested yesterday for theft.

Officers are investigating an assault report taken at a residence on Cedar Street; missing street signs at the intersection of Globe Street and Glance Street; a report of identity theft taken at a residence on Broad Street; and a vehicle burglary at a business on Highway 60.

Miami Council Meets Tuesday


The Miami Town Council meets tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6:30.

The agenda incudes possible acceptance of a Gila County economic development grant to purchase the Cobre Valley Community Transit building and property on Sullivan Street.

The Council will also consider  accepting a wastewater treatment facility from Freeport McMoRan.

The Council will consider a Letter of Support for the formation of a committee to discuss the consolidation of public safety services.

And the Council will consider a grant agreement with the Arizona Department of Transortation for a transit van for the Miami Senior Center.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday evening on Highway 60.

There were no injuries in a two vehicle accident Friday morning on Highway 60 in front of McDonalds.

Two people were arrested after a disturbance last night at a residence on E. Oak Street. 25 year old Jonathan Baeza and 25 year old Deborah Baeza were both charged with domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

Globe Police arrested 27 year old Devin Rodriguez early Sunday morning at a business on Hunter Drive. Rodriguez was charged with domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

52 year old Danny Woods  was arrested for DUI.

58 year old Maria Weiland was arrested  for false reporting to law enforcement.

50 year old Jerry Torrez of Eager was arrested for trespasing at a business on North Broad Street.

On Saturday Globe Police arrested 19 year old David Nieto for possession of marijuana and narcotic drugs.

38 year old Robert Rodriguez and 34 year old Christina Henson were arrested for child support warrants.

51 year old Rosemary Crawford was arrested at Westside Mobile Home Park for domestic violence assault.

20 year old Breelyn Cano was arersted late Friday night for at a residence on Quartz Loop for domestic violence criminal damage.

Officers are investigating a report of sexual assault taken at a residence on Calle de Loma; criminal damage at a residence on North Quartz Loop; and shoplifting at the Family Dollar store.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s office arrested 43 year old Alta Bray for driving with a suspended license..

39 year old Angel Rosalez was arrested on a child support warrant.

Deputies are investigating illegal dumping in the area of Hershey Highway.

Mesa Police arrested 37 year old Anthony Glover of Claypool for failure to appear on charges of criminal trespass and contempt of court for driving with a suspended license.

Grace Louise Stanneart passed away May 20. She was 78. She is survived by 3 children, including Jackie Stanneart of Globe; 6 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
