'Vandal Days' Begin July 22 at MHS

Miami High School presents “Vandal Days” beginning Monday, July 22.

Students and their parents will have an opportunity to register for the school year, purchase a yearbook, receive information about athletic programs and receive class schedules. You can also meet the School Resource Officer and find about available services in the area.

It begins Monday, July 22 for seniors, from 8:am to 3:pm in the Miami High School Library. It continues Tuesday, July 23 for juniors; Wednesday, July 24 for sophomores; and Thursday, July 25 for freshmen. 

Eighth graders can attend on Monday, July 29 and 7th graders on Tuesday the 30th.


Shipman Fire Contained

The American Red Cross has closed its shelter at Ray Elementary School in Kearny, where people were housed this week after the Shipman Fire.

The 500-acre fire was expected to be contained by midnight last night. Evacuation orders for residents in Stephens Trailer Court have been lifted.


Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning on Highway 60.

Last night an 18-wheeler ran into a couple of fences in the area of Ruth Avenue and got stuck. A tow truck was called and a report was taken.

Globe Police arrested 33 year old Joshua David for aggravated domestic violence after a domestic dispute on North Sixth Street.

33 year old Shaun Pahe was arrested for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

47 year old Joseph Root was arrested for shoplifting at a business on South Hill Street.

29 year old Michelle Randall was arrested in the area of South Broad Street and Halby Court for false reporting to law enforcement and an outstanding warrant.

Officers are investigating a burglary on South Jess Hayes Road and an attempted theft at a business on North Broad Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Justin Alaniz on a failure to pay warrant for disorderly conduct.

Deputies are investigating the theft of a camper shell on Calle De Loma; a fraud report taken at a residence in Wheatfields; and criminal damage to a vehicle on Second Avenue.

Gila Monster Go-Kart Races Friday Night

The Gila Monster Go-Kart races begin at 7:pm Friday at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

Admission is free into the grandstands. Food will be available for purchase.


Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a single vehicle accident yesterday morning in the area of East Ash Street.

There were no injuries in a single vehicle accident in the area of Arbor and Paxton. The occupants of the car were referred to juvenile probation.

50 year old Lyle Pahe was arrested yesterday afternoon for criminal trespassing. 43 year old Ralph Francisco was also arrested at that time for false reporting to law enforcement.

41 year old Ramon Gonzales of Phoenix was arrested late last night in the drive thru at a business on East Ash. Gonzales was charged with aggravated DUI.

Officers are investigating criminal damage and criminal trespassing at a business on Highway 60; a theft at another business on Highway 60; and criminal damage in the area of the Globe Community Center.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Michael Castaneda on a failure to pay warrant for disorderly conduct.

Deputies are investigating a burglary at Guayo’s on the Trail and a theft report taken at Holiday Hills Mobile Home Park.

Globe Library Volunteer Meeting

The Globe Public Library is looking for volunteers to help organize a haunted house in October.
The first planning meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 23 ar 2:30pm.

Police Log

Yesterday afternoon local fire agencies responded to a chemical spill at Horne Motor Company and an electrical fire at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

Globe Police arrested 36 year old Gerald Phillips for domestic violence/disorderly conduct following a disturbance on Linda Vista Drive.

47 year old Anthony Bullis was arrested for shoplifting at a business on South Hill Street.

48 year old Daniel Bond was arrested yesterday on a contempt of court warrant for assault and a failure to pay warrant for shoplifting.

39 year old Marvina Mull was also arrested yesterday on a failure to appear warrant for shoplifting.

Gila County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a man waving a gun  on Upper Glendale. 39 year old Manuel Varela of Mesa was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for possession of a stolen firearm and a child support warrant.

Deputies are investigating a theft reported at Freeport McMoRan and illegal dumping in the area of Russell Road.

The Alzheimer’s Education and Support group meets today (Wednesday) at 1:pm at the Globe Active Adult center.

The Globe School Board meets today (Wednesday) at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

The agenda includes possible approval of the 2013-2014 budget.

Police Log

Globe Police arrested  33 year old Jeffrey Kemper of Show Low at a business on Highway 60 for criminal damage.

A juvenile was issued a juvenile referral for organized retail theft at a business on Highway 60.

37 year old Ben Shaw was arrested for criminal nuissance at a business on Hill Street.

31 year old Coral Koepf was arrested on a contempt of court warrant for DUI.

A delayed assault report was taken early this morning at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Cheyenne Fogelietti for disorderly conduct and domestic violence at Pinto Creek Mobile Home Park.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating a theft at a residence on Ice House Canyon and a theft at a residence on Broadway.


Shipman Fire Update

The CopperArea.com Facebook page reports that significant progress has been made on the Shipman Fire near Kearny. State Forester Scott Hunt says only five acres is now actively burning, 100 acres total. The Shipman Fire had been reported last night to be burning up to 300 acres.

Fire lines have been built to protect homes  A team that was ordered from Southern Arizona will arrive this morning but the Incident Commander believes they may not be needed.

The five miles of State Route 177 that was closed is now open.

The lightning-caused fire began shortly after 5:pm yesterday (Monday)  near the San Pedro River.

Shipman Fire Burning Near Kearny

A lightning-caused fire near Kearny has burned more than 300 acres. The Shipman Fire has forced evacuations and burned at least two structures.

The fire began shortly after 5:pm yesterday (Monday)  near the San Pedro River.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says five miles of State Route 177 has been closed.

The American Red Cross set up a shelter early this morning at Ray Elementary School. About 25 people who have been evacuated are currently at the shelter.


Obituary

Ralph Edward Kniffin of San Carlos passed away Saturday at San Carlos Indian Hospital. He was 66. He is survived by his mother Sadie Stevens; 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
A Memorial Service for Ralph Kniffin will be held Friday (July 12) at 10:am at Lamont Mortuary.

Historic Main Street Town Hall Meeting

The Historic Globe Main Street Program is hosting a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday (July 9) at Globe City Hall. It’s from 6 to 8:pm.

Topics include the “A-frame” sign ordinance enforcement.


Police Log

No injuries were reported in an accident Saturday morning at Cottonwood and Broad Streets.

Early Sunday morning Globe Police and fire personnel responded to a fire at a residence on Main Street.  The fire turned out to be in a yard and was already put out when they arrived. However, about an hour and a half later fire personnel were dispatched to a second fire in the same area. The fire was put out without incident. The case has been turned over to the Globe Fire Marshall for investigation.

Globe Police arrested 32 year old Joshua Campbell of Missouri late last night at a business on Highway 60 for sexual misconduct with a minor.

42 year old Deborah Walsh was arrested yesterday afternoon at a residence on East Cedar Street for cruelty to animals.

32 year old Chad Splane was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Splane also had outstanding  failure to comply warrants for assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal trespass and criminal damage.

43 year old Kyle Cook was arrested Saturday for shoplifting at a business on South Hill Street.

50 year old Lyle Pahe was arrested  for another shoplifting incident at a business on South Hill Street.

On Friday Globe Police arrested 24 year old Kyle Hamlet for domestic violence/disorderly conduct after a disturbance on Vista Circle.

50 year old Veronica Antonio was arrested for shoplifting at a business on East Ash Street.

An officer responded to a theft report at a business on North Broad street. 48 year old Steven Delara  was arrested on a Gila County warrant for aggravated DUI. The theft investigation is pending.

Officers are investigating a hit and run that caused a gas leak Saturday at a residence on West Banker; a report of threats and intimidation taken at South Broad and Hill Streets; and a delayed assault report.

On Friday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Jaime Freeman on a failure to pay warrant for disorderly conduct.

Deputies are investigating criminal damage to a wall at a residence on Highway 188; and shoplifting at the Claypool Circle K.


Miami Town Council Meets Tonight at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

There will be a presentation about the “Go Wild” program to promote nature-based tourism.

The agenda also includes possible approval of the 2013 Cobre Valley Comprehensive Transportation Plan.

Globe City Council Meets Tonight at 6:00

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

There will be public hearings on the property tax levy, the 2013-2014 budget, and a proposed increase in water and wastewater rates and fees.

New business includes the annual contract with the Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens with a $119,000 cash match.
