Miami Council Meets Monday at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets Monday at 6:30pm.

The Council will discuss and possibly approve a Professional Services Contract with EUSI, LLC for operation and management of the Town’s wastewater treatment plant.

The Council will also consider financial disclosure standards for local public officials.


Boys and Girls Club Youth Day Camp

The Globe branch of the East Valley Boys and Girls Club invites local youth and teens from 5 to 14 years of age to a safe and affordable day camp next week while school is out.

It’s from 7:30am to 5:30pm, Monday, October 14 through Friday, October 18. The location is 1435 South Hagan Road, below the old Liberty High School.

There will be games, arts and crafts, and other activities.

The cost is $25 for one child or $40 per family.

Lunch is not provided so your child will need to bring a sack lunch each day.

City of Globe Investigating Stealing Allegations

The City of Globe has issued a press release about allegations that City employees may have been stealing public property. The Globe Police Department is investigating the allegations and will release a report when the investigation is complete. One employee has been arrested.

The City believes that this is an isolated incident and that it does not reflect the behavior of any City employees other than those who are directly involved.

City Administration is making policy changes to make sure that these alleged activities do not occur again.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office booked 34 year old Jeffrey Horlacher of Globe for sexual assault, domestic violence and resisting arrest.

The Gila County Task Force arrested 32 year old David Berumen for probation violation, misconduct with a weapon, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

32 year old Peter Martinez was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

56 year old Daniel Singh was arrested yesterday for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies are investigating a report of a runaway juvenile taken on Calle De Loma; a theft reported at a residence on Morrow Street; an assault reported at a residence on Pineway; and  an assault reported at an address on Russell Road.

Florence Police arrested 24 year old Justin Clyder of Globe on a failure to comply warrant for leaving the scene of an accident.


Obituary

Lifetime Miami resident Elias C. Lazarin passed away October 9. He was 76.
He is survived by his wife Alice; his daughters Tina Carnahan and Grace Lazarin; his son Greg; his brother Richard; his sister Carmen Salcido; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Rosary for Elias Lazarin is Monday at 9:30am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:00.


PMFHE Oktoberfest

Pinal Mountain Foundation for Higher Education will host their fifth annual Oktoberfest this Saturday (October 12) at Veterans Memorial Park in Globe.

The festivities begin at 11:am and will continue until 8:pm. Admission is free.

Refreshments will include German bratwurst, hot dogs, sodas, and a beer garden. There will be entertainment throughout the event.

Book Signing Saturday with Donis Casey and Local Author Eric Hertwig

A book signing with Donis Casey will take place Saturday (October 12)  at 2:pm at the Globe Public Library.

Donis Casey is the author of six mysteries about a sleuthing mother of ten children set in Oklahoma and Arizona during the 1910’s.

Casey has won the Arizona Book Award twice and has been a finalist for the Willa Award and the Oklahoma Book Award.

The book signing also includes local author Eric Hertwig whose Zoo Adventure Seies is a collection of children’s stories.


Elks Hoop Shoot this Saturday

Globe and Miami kids from 8 to 13 are invited to compete in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free-Throw Contest hosted by the Pinal Mountain Elks Lodge.

The event starts at 8:am this Saturday (October 12). The contest for 8 and 9 year olds  is at 9:am. Ten and 11 year olds compete at 10:am and 12 and 13 year olds at 11:am.

Tri-City Fire District Open House

The Tri-City Fire District will have its annual Open House this Saturday (October 12) from 10:am to 2:pm at the fire station in Claypool.

Kids’ activities include equipment displays, safety demonstrations, goody bags, door prizes, food and drinks.

Globe-Miami and Besh-Ba-Gowah Tours on Friday

The 14th Annual Arizona Highlands Garden Conference will include a Globe-Miami tour on Friday (October 11) beginning at 11:am. It starts at the Bullion Plaza Museum in Miami and is led by historian Lynn Haak. 

A tour of the Besh-Ba-Gowah Archeological Ruins begins at 4:30pm.

Walk and Wag Against Abuse

On Saturday  the Horizon Domestic Violence Safe Home, the High Desert Humane Society and the Gila County Health Department will host the Annual Walk and Wag Against Abuse in downtown Globe.

The purpose of the event is to help connect the link between domestic violence and animal abuse. It includes activities, demonstrations and refreshments.

Feel free to dress your pup in a crazy costume and bring your wagon to pull your pet on the walk through town .

Registration begins Saturday at 11:am at the train depot in Globe. The  walk begins at Noon and will end by 2:pm.

The fee for the Walk and Wag is $10 and includes a pet bandana.

Police Log

There was a two vehicle collision yesterday afternoon on Highway 60.

Another two vehicle collision occurred in an area of Skyline Drive.

Two men were charged with criminal damage last night at a business on South Broad Street. 47 year old Orien Newman and 30 year old Myron Bush were booked into the Gila County Jail.

34 year old Jeffery Horlacher was arrested late last night for resisting arrest and false reporting to law enforcement.

24 year old Florentino Cassa was arrested yesterday on warrants for disorderly conduct, assault, criminal damage and shoplifting.

Officers are investigating a stolen vehicle reported at a business on North Broad Street and  shoplifting at a business on South Hill Street.

San Carlos Police arrested 37 year old Jessica Lopez of Globe on failure to comply warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia and child support.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 year old Marco Taliman on contempt of court warrants for shoplifting and disorderly conduct.

Deputies are investigating criminal damage at a residence on Central Drive.

Ray Anthony Robles passed away October 8 at his home in Globe. He was 53. He is survived by his sons Joshua and Ray Robles, Jr.; his daughter Alexandra of Globe; and his sister.
Rosary for Ray Robles will be Saturday at 9:30am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. The funeral is at 10:00.

Laura Jean Clark of San Carlos passed away October 6 at San Carlos Hospital. She was 41. She is survived by her parents Jennie and Robert Clark; and her brother Michael.
The wake for Laura Clark is Saturday at 6:am at Grace Lutheran Church. The funeral is at 10:00.

Mental Health First Aid Training in Globe

Cenpatico of Arizona is sponsoring Mental Health First Aid Training in Globe on Wednesday, October 23 at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. It will be from 8:am until 5:pm in the MOB Room.

The training includes a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to people with the signs and symptoms of a mental illness or  a crisis, and then connect them with the appropriate professional, social, or self help care.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on Jesse Hayes Road.

Last night Globe Police arrested 30 year old Myron Bush for shoplifting at a business on East Ash.

Officers are investigating a report of a stolen vehicle; a fraud report; a burglary on South Fourth Street; and a report of threats taken at a residence on South Fairview.


Obituary

Dempsey Mahsill, Jr. of San Carlos passed away October 6 at Copper Mountain Inn. He was 65. He is survived by his daughter Garlene Dillon and his son Davalillo Mahsill.

The wake is Saturday at 4:pm at the Mahsill residence. The funeral is Sunday at 1:pm at Burdette Hall.

CVCT Now Provides Service to Wheatfields

Cobre Valley Community Transit is now providing service to Wheatfields.

A bus will stop at Apache Trail Mobile Home Park and Holiday Hills Mobile Home Park on Mondays and Wednesdays  at 9:am. The bus will take passengers to the Claypool Safeway and Walmart. If you need to go somewhere else in the Globe-Miami area, you can catch the fixed route at 9:35 am at Safeway.

The return ride back to Wheatfields will leave at 2:30pm from the Claypool Safeway.

The cost is $1 each way. The cost for students, seniors and the disabled is 50 cents each way.

There was a two vehicle collision yesterday evening on Highway 60.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Heather Henderson on a child support warrant.

22 year old Holli Vinsant was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for displaying a false plate.

Deputies are investigating a theft from a vehicle on Old Oak; criminal damage at a residence on Braley Avenue; and a theft at a residence on Highway 188.

Globe Police are investigating a report of forgery taken at a business on East Ash Street; a theft at a business on East Ash; a burglary on Manzanita Drive; and shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.


Obituary

Mary Antonia Mani  passed away October 5 at her home in Miami. She was 62. She is survived by her mother Uvalda Mani; her son Steven; her daughter Nancy Richter; 4 sisters; and 7 grandchildren.
Visitation for Toni Mani is Saturday at 9:30am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church followed a Rosary Mass and luncheon.

US 60 Rock Containment Project Begins October 15

A rock containment project on US 60 within the San Carlos and White Mountain Apache Reservations will begin on Tuesday, October 15. The boundaries are 35 miles north of Globe and about 18 miles south of Show Low.

The $1 million project includes repairing rock containment fences and support structures, rock scaling, minor pavement widening and resurfacing, grading excavation ditches and cleaning culverts.

The project will continue into January, when it will be shut down for the winter and resume in the spring of 2014.

Work hours will be 7:am to 5:pm Monday through Thursday. There will be total lane closures and one-way lane closures at different times during the project. Closures could last up to 30 minutes.

Parking, Pickup and Drop Off Locations at MJSHS

Miami Jr./Sr. High School announces that all student drop off and pickup is now in the North Parking Lot, where the solar panels are stationed. The North Parking Lot is also for visitors and staff parking. Visitors are reminded that they are required to enter and sign in at the office.

Student parking and bus drop off and pickup  is now in the West Lot. The left lane will be left open as a through lane for traffic to exit, while the right lane will be reserved for buses.

Bobby Joe Lee of Roosevelt passed away October 2 in Mesa. He was 71. He is survived by his wife Barbara; his daughter; his son; his sister and his brother.
A Memorial Service for Bobby Joe Lee will be held Friday (October 11) at 11:am at Roosevelt Baptist Church.


Globe Announces Finalists for Police Chief

The City of Globe has announced the three finalists who are being considered for the position of Globe Police Chief. They are:

Simon Brown of  Wasilla, Alaska. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Alaska Army National Guard and retired Commander of the Alaska State Troopers.

Timothy Truett of Maricopa, Arizona is the Professional Standards Unit Supervisor for the Maricopa Police Department.

And Jeffrey Kirkham of Mesa, Arizona is a Compliance Specialist with AZ Post, former Nogales Police Chief, and a retired Mesa Police Lieutenant.

The finalists are undergoing intensive background review and the City Council is conducting interviews.

There were two hit and run collisions yesterday morning. One was on North Broad Street and the other was on East Ash.

No injuries were reported in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on East Ash.

One driver was cited after a two vehicle accident Saturday evening on East Ash.

A three vehicle accident occurred on Friday afternoon on Highway 60.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 35 year old inmate Gabriel Cabrera on  warrants for DUI and driving with a suspended license.

35 year old Holly Renteria was arrested for trespassing Saturday morning at a residence on Santee Street.

23 year old Michael Harris was arrested late Saturday night for DUI and indecent exposure.

25 year old Kyle Hamlet was arrested on a warrant for disorderly conduct.

43 year old Martin Cassadore was arrested early Saturday morning for threats and intimidation. A short time later he was contacted at the Gila County Jail and arrested for criminal trespass in connection with a previous incident.

On Friday, Globe Police arrested 18 year old Anthony Leetham for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

21 year old Eduardo Armenta was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for DUI.

Officers are investigating shoplifting at a business on Highway 60; a report of trespassing in the area of South Hagen Road; and criminal damage at a business on Highway 60.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old inmate Iroquois Sullivan on a contempt of court warrant for disorderly conduct.

33 year old Joshua Ensworth was arrested on Saturday on a failure to comply warrant for disorderly conduct and criminal damage.

Deputies are investigating domestic incidents on Ice House Canyon, Morrow Avenue, Calle De Loma, Sunrise Mobile Home Park; a hit and run near Guayo’s On the Trail; a vehicle stolen from Holiday Hills Mobile Home Park; a report of harassment taken at a residence on Hackney; burglaries at the Cobre Valley County Club, Apache Trail Mobile Home Park, and at a residence on Glendale; thefts reported on Apache Hills Lane and at a residence on Braley; and criminal damage at a residence on Stagecoach.

Florence Police arrested 24 year old Renita Shorten of Bylas on a failure to comply warrant for issuing a bad check.

Tempe Police arrested 35 year old Marco Taliman of San Carlos on a failure to pay warrant for criminal trespass.

Stacy Lynn Thompson passed away October 3 at her home in Globe. She was 46. She is survived by her parents Dortha and Cecil Thompson; and her sons George and Christopher Barnes.
Funeral services for Stacy Thompson will be private.
