Miami Council Meets Monday at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets Monday at 6:30pm.

The Council will discuss and possibly direct staff to provide information about the costs, procedures and legal requirements and concerns of establishing  a Town of Miami website and a Facebook page.

The Council will approve a request from Miami High School to use Sullivan Street for a Homecoming Parade on October 5, and to provide traffic control and barricades by the Miami Police Department.

Globe Council Meets Monday at 6:PM


Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm.

There will be a special recognition of Besh Ba Gowah city employee Pete Gardea.

The Council will consider approving the ninth amended Interim Emergency Fire Intergovernmental Agreement with the Town of Miami.

They will discuss a Round Mountain Park Heritage Grant application, and an Intergovernmental Agreement with the University of Arizona Gila County Cooperative Extension for use of City property.

All American Cookout Winners

The Gila County Rodeo Committee was First Place and the only entry in the Ground Beef category.

Craig Jones was the winner in the Beef All Other Cuts category.
Second Place: DC Cattle
Third Place: Thompson, Montgomery and DeRose.

Craig Jones was also the highest scorer. He is the winner of the All American Cookout traveling trophy with bragging rights for an entire year.

Three More Performances of 'Is He Dead?'


There are three more performances of Mark Twain’s “Is He Dead?” this weekend  by the Copper Cities Community Players.

Shows are at 7:pm tonight (Friday) and at 2 and 7:pm Saturday.

Police Log


Globe Police arrested 27 year old Justin Dewey yesterday afternoon for shoplifting at the Hill Street Safeway.

25 year old Cory Riley was arrested at the Gila County Jail for shoplifting from a business on South Hill Street on August 24.

48 year old Paul Pahe was arrested on a failure to pay warrant for a drug paraphernalia violation.

Officers are investigating a theft at a residence on Mesquite; criminal damage to a building on Ash Street; and a burglary at Copper Country Mobile Home Park.

Graham County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Candace Gibbs of Globe on a failure to comply warrant for false reporting to law enforcement and driving with a canceled license.

Obituaries


Glendora Phillips of San Carlos passed away September 17 at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. She was 47. She is survived by her brothers and sisters and her cousins, nieces and nephews.
The wake for Glendora Phillips is tomorrow (Saturday) at 4:pm at the Glendora Phillips residence. The funeral is Sunday at San Carlos Miracle Church.

Betty Jo Patton of San Carlos passed away September 14 at San Carlos Indian Hospital. She was 71. She is survived by her son Stanley Patton, Jr.; her daughter  Carolee Hooke; and her brother.
The wake for Betty Jo Patton is tomorrow (Saturday) at 4:pm at the Patton residence. The funeral is Sunday at 2:pm at Full Gospel Church.

Benefit Concert in Miami


A benefit concert to raise money to help two families with little girls fighting cancer will be held Saturday at Miami Veterans Memorial Park on Sullivan Street.

The event is from 2 to 9:pm and there will also be plenty of food.

Habitat for Humanity Dedication and Open House


Globe-Miami Habitat for Humanity will have a home dedication on Sunday, September 30 at 3:pm. It’s at the April Hernandez family home at 605 S. Sycamore Street.

The community is invited to this dedication and Open House.

Fundraiser for Jason Sanchez Islet Cell Transplant


A Baked Potato Dinner Fundraiser for Jason Sanchez will take place tomorrow (Friday) from 5 to 7:pm at Divine Grace Presbyterian Church in Miami.

The cost is $10 a person to benefit the Southwest Islet Cell/Kidney Transplant Fund.

Nobody was hurt in an accident early yesterday morning on Highway 60. A semi was caught on the guard rail due to speeding motorcycles.

One driver was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign after a two vehicle accident yesterday morning at Oak and Broad Street.

18 year old Brandon Twohey was cited for driving with a canceled license and failure to control his vehicle to avoid an accident. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon in the area of Roberts and Apache Hills.

Miami Police arrested 29 year old Esquiel Flores on a child support warrant.

Globe Police arrested 25 year old Aaron Joe for aggravated DUI.

Globe Police arrested a juvenile for shoplifting at the Seventh Street Circle K.

The Gla County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of sexual assault that occurred in the Claypool area; a theft on Morrow;  and a theft on Wheatfields Road.

Richard Delma of Peridot passed away September 12 at Copper Mountain Inn. He was 49. He is survived by his father William Delma, Sr.; his sisters Flora Rogers, Velda Kenton and Beverly Chaney;  and his brothers Culy Delma, Sr. and Carlos Delma, Sr.
The wake for Richard Delma is tomorrow (Friday) at 4:pm at the William Delma, Sr. residence. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm at San Carlos Miracle Church.

Gila County Fair Thursday through Sunday


The Gila County Fair begins Thursday and continues through Sunday at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

An All American cookoff and Salsa contest starts Thursday at 5:30. Entertainment will be provided by the bluegrass band Run Boy Run.

On Friday at 7:pm there’s a Bull Riding Competition featuring 20 top cowboys and 20 top bulls. A dance follows the rodeo from 9 to Midight with the Moonshine Mafia Band.

Brigade Freestyle Motocross Shows are on Saturday and Sunday, and there’s a Demolition Derby Saturday night at 7.

This year’s entertainment also includes carnival rides, a Live Stingray Encounter, All Alaskan Racing Pigs, Pedal Tractor Races for  kids, a petting zoo and pony rides.

Brown’s Amusement Carnival is hosting a Canned Food Drive Thursday from 5 to 7:pm. Bring 3 cans of food and ride for free from 5 to 7:00.

Fair admission is $5 a person, 6 years old and up.

Presentation About Early Globe-Miami Cemeteries


The Miami Hardscarabble series resumes tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30 at the Bullion Plaza Museum and Cultural Center.

Donna Anderson will talk about the first cemeteries in this area and who was buried there.

The Miami Hardscrabble programs are free and open to the public. Light refreshments are available after the presentations.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Ray VanBusKirk for domestic violence/disorderly conduct and assault in connection with a disturbance on Eagle Ridge..

The Gila County Narcotics Task Force arrested 35 year old Paul Echevarria on a child support warrant.

26 year old Natasha Darnell was cited and released for false reporting to law enforcement

Deputies are investigating a domestic disturbance at Sunrise Mobile Home Park  and a report of animal cruelty taken at a residence on Golden Hill.

The Department of Public Safety arrested 41 year old Gail Gustina on a failure to appear warrant for tampering with physical evidencce.

Phoenix Police arrested 44 year old Jacqueline Speer of Globe on a child support warrant and failure to appear on a charge of attempted theft of a credit card.

Globe Police are investigating a burglary at a residence on Mesquite.

Obituary


Patricia Capps of Globe passed away September 11 at Mercy Gilbert Hospital in Gilbert. She was 73.
She is survived by her son Mitchell and her sister.
Visitation for Patricia Capps will be Saturday at Noon at Lamont Mortuary. A graveside service will follow at Globe Cemetery.

Centennial Jazz Band to Perform at Hamburger Fry


The Globe-Miami Centennial Band will begin its 2012-2013 season with an outdoor performance at the Gila County Historical Museum on Friday, September 28. 

The Centennial Band’s jazz group will entertain at the Museum’s hamburger fry. This monthly event is s fundraiser for the Historical Museum.  Dinner is $7 and includes hamburgers, salads, sides, dessert and a drink. If you don’t want to eat, you can bring a lawn chair to enjoy the music.

The Centennial Band rehearses every Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 in the Miami Band room and always welcomes new members. Interested musicians may call Kathleen at 928-793-4626.

Raffle Tickets to Raise Funds for Jesse Luna's Kidney Transplant


Raffle tickets are being sold to raise money for Jesse Luna’s kidney transplant.

Tickets will be sold until October 14. The winners will be drawn at a pool tournament at the Huddle. Tickets are $20 each.

Raffle tickets to help Jesse Luna can also be purchased at the Globe Farmer’s Market on September 22.

Nobody was hurt in an accident last night at Ash and High Streets. One driver was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.

There were no injuries in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on North Broad Street. One driver was issued a citation.

52 year old Keith Williams was arrested early this morning on Yuma Street for domestic violence/assault.

Three juveniles were referred to juvenile probation yesterday morning after found contraband at Globe High School.

Yesterday afternoon two intoxicated Globe High School students were referred to juvenile probation.

Officers are investigating a theft that occurred on Main Street.

Miami Police arrested 37 year old Jessica Lopez for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office located a vehicle that was reported stolen from a residence on Central Drive. The car was returned to the owner and the case is under investigation.

Beckley Police Department in West Virginia arrested 46 year old Benedict Vayrecka of Claypool for probation violation on charges of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.

Wayne Cly of Peridot passed away Friday at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. He was 61. He is survived by his son Myron; 3 brothers; and 3 grandchildren.
The wake for Wayne Cly will be Thursday at 4:pm at the Ross Dia residence. The funeral is Friday at 10:am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in San Carlos.

Globe School Board Meets Tuesday


The Globe School Board meets Tuesday at 6:pm.

The agenda includes a presentation and approval of the donation of the Globe High School marquee by the Globe Alumni Association.

GHS Hall of Fame Weatherspoon Brothers to Visit Globe


Globe High School Hall of Fame brothers Cephus and Ed Weatherspoon will be in town  Friday night to attend the Globe/Alchesay game at Harbison Field.

They will speak at the Globe High School gymnasium on Monday morning at 8:am.

After that, Cephus and Ed will be at the Globe Active Adult Center at 11:am. The whole community is invited to meet the Weatherspoon brothers and then stay for lunch  Lunch is $5 and you can make a lunch reservation by calling 425-9030.

Medicare Fraud Presentation at GAAC


A presentation about Medicare fraud starts  at 11:15am Tuesday at the Globe Active Adult Center.

Plane Crash Kills Three Near Strawberry


Three people were killed in a plane crash near Strawberry.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter found the wreckage Saturday morning in Calf  Pen Canyon.

The student pilot and passenger were residents of the Netherlands. The flight instructor was from the Phoenix area.

An FAA spokesman says the plane apparently hit a cliff wall.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue team hiked to the site and determined there were no survivors.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident Saturday afternoon at a business on Highway 60. Both drivers were cited.

A Globe Police officer was involved in a collision Friday night in the area of Beer Tree Crossing. 29 year old Jesus Flores was arrested for DUI.

Last night Globe Police arrested 23 year old Jeffrey Horlacher for domestic violence/assault after a disturbance on North Broad Street.

47 year old Daniel Bond was arrested Saturday morning for domestic violence assault at a business on East Ash.

Two people were arrested Saturday for shoplifting at Walmart. 30 year old Maria Robles was arrested for shoplifting, and warrants for issuing a bad check and driving with a suspended license. 26 year old Tonya Horta was also charged with shoplifting.

21 year old Zachariah Cole was arrested Friday night for shoplifting in connection with an incident that occurred on September 11.

Officers are investigating a domestic disturbance that occurred Saturday night on Hackney Avenue; shoplifting at the Hill Street Safeway; criminal damage at a residence on Side Street; criminal damage at a residence on East Bailey Street; and a burglary at a business on North Broad Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage to a vehicle at the Claypool Little League field; theft and criminal damage at a residence in Ice House Canyon; criminal damage at a residence on Main Street; and a theft on Broadway Street.

Miami Police arrested 26 year old David Vinsant for driving with a suspended license.

Superior Police arrested 36 year old Santana Dillon of Peridot on a failure to pay warrant for driving with a suspended license.


Obituary


Alice C. Hernandez passed away September 13 at her home in Central Heights. She was 74. She is survived by 5 children, including Ray Hernandez, Vicki Layton and Andrea Mayorga of Globe; 5 sisters, including Edith Barajas of Miami, and Ida Padilla and Margarite Williams of Globe; 4 brothers; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The funeral for Alice Hernandez will be Thursday at 10:am at Globe Christian Center.
