Police Log


Last night Globe Police arrested Deidre Hickman at a business on North Broad Street for organized retail theft and trafficking in stolen property.

An officer took a delayed burglary report at a residence on South Devereaux.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a stolen backhoe from a residence on Vertical Heights; a stolen handgun from a residence on Huie Street; criminal damage to a vehicle on Scott Avenue; and a report of a runaway juvenile from the area of Mackey’s Camp.

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Manuel Casillas of Globe on a child support warrant.

Obituary


Joseph M. Browning of San Carlos passed away April 17 at San Carlos Indian Hospital. He was 23. He is survived by 4 children; his parents Leroy and Emily Browning; 3 brothers; 5 sisters; and his longtime companion Sonya Allen.
The wake for Joseph Browning is today (Friday) at 4:pm at the Browning residence. The funeral is tomorrow (Saturday) at World Evangelism Revival Church.

Old Dominion Park Clean Up This Saturday


Volunteers are meeting at Old Dominion Mine Park on Saturday (April 27) to help with new trail construction, building a footbridge, putting up signs and other projects.

The work for the Volunteer Day will take place from 8:am to 1:pm.

If you’d like to help, it’s recommended that you  wear a long sleeve shirt and pants, gloves, closed-toe shoes and a hat. You should also wear sunscreen and bring the necessary gardening tools to help clear the trails.

Water, other drinks and lunch will be provided by Freeport McMoRan.


Mother's Day Tea Party Event This Sunday


The annual Spring Mother’s Day Tea Party will be held Sunday (April 28) at the Dream Manor Inn. It’s from 2 to 4:pm.

The event includes a luncheon, music, lots of prizes and a fashion show.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds to help southern Gila County children.

The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children.

GCC Art Show and Arbor Day Celebration


The Gila Community College Fifth Annual Art Show and Arbor Day Celebration will take place on Saturday (April 27) from 11:am to 4:pm at the Gila Pueblo Campus.

The Art Show features a variety of art work by Gila Community College students and instructors. The art will be displayed in the pueblo and along the Marietta Trail.

Pinal Mountain Foundation for Education will sell food with proceeds going to the scholarship fund for the 2013 semester.

Globe PD to Collect Unused Prescription Drugs


This Saturday (April 27) the Globe Police Department will collect old and unused prescription drugs from 10:am  until 2:pm at Fry’s.

Monthly Hamburger Fries Begin This Friday


The first Hamburger Fry of the season will take place on Friday (April 26) starting at 5:30pm. The monthly hamburger fries will be held  the last Friday of each month through September.

The fee for the dinner is $7 a person. The meals include  hamburgers, salads, chips, beans,  desserts and a choice of beverages
.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Globe-Miami Centennial Band.

Lifelong Miami resident Johnny Flores has passed away at the age of 70.
Services at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church will be announced.


Miami native Paul Apodaca Contreras of Gold Canyon passed away Tuesday. He is survived by his daughter; 2 sisters; 5 brothers; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Visitation for Paul Contreras is Saturday at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Children's Day/Book Day Tomorrow at Globe Library


Celebrate El Dia de Los Ninos and El Dia De Los Libros tomorrow (Friday) at the Globe Public Library.

From 9 to 11:am local authors will read their favorite children’s books.

The event is free and children of all ages are encouraged to attend.

Historic Photo and Letters to be Returned to Pifer Family


Tomorrow (Friday) afternoon Jim Ole will return a historic picture and letters to the Pifer family.

The picture and letters were found inside an old tobacco can while remodeling the “arch building” downtown.

The young girl in the picture was Charlotte Pifer and the letters were written to a young man back in 1920.

The Pifer family had a presence in Globe for many years and the Pifer Ranch was just outside the City Limits close to the Globe Cemetery.

Globe staff did some research and found Charlotte’s nephew Tom Pifer in Casa Grande.

The items will be returned to the Pifer family tomorrow at 3:pm at the old walking bridge across Pine Street from the Old Dominion parking lot. That’s close to the spot where the picture was taken 93 years ago.

Yesterday afternoon Globe Police assisted the Gila County Probation Department at a business on East Ash Street. Two people were detained for drug violations. 44 year old Johnny Boggs was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Corrina Orozco was charged with possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.

A theft report was taken at a residence on Skyline.

Obituary


Herbert Hoover Haynes of Peridot passed away April 18 in Mesa. He was 82. He is survived by his wife Josephine; his daughter; 2 sons; his step-son; his step-daughter; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; and 3 grandchildren.
The wake for Herbert Haynes is Saturday at 4:pm at the Haynes residence. The funeral is Sunday at 2:pm at the Church of Jesus Christ in Peridot.

Globe PD Warns of Frequent Parking Violations


The Globe Police Department is notifying the community of several parking violations that have been occurring lately. These include parking on sidewalks and in cross walks, red zones, and within 20 feet of intersections. Vehicles are also being parked with the driver side to the curb.

These violations can endanger the safety of  other drivers and pedestrians.

Vehicles  can be cited for each day of the violation or be towed at your expense.

The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter is providing assistance to three adults and two children who lost their house to a fire yesterday on Copper  Street in Claypool. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but arson is not suspected at this time.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 25 year old Montana Barlow and 22 year old Tonya Nofchissey for shoplifting at a business on Hill Street. Barlow also had an outstanding warrant.

40 year old Angel Rosales was arrested yesterday in connection with a shoplifting incident earlier this week.

Officers are investigating a delayed assault report taken at a residence on Fegan Street; criminal damage at a residence on Main Street; and a theft on Carico Street.

Miami Police arrested 31 year old Amy Bradford on a failure to appear warrant for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Task Force arrested 36 year old Gilbert Casillas on warrants for child support, misconduct involving weapons and possession of dangerous drugs.

48 year old Todd Hamlet was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for disorderly conduct/fighting.

33 year old Joshua Ensworth was arrested on contempt of court warrants for theft and disorderly conduct.

50 year old David Caddell was arrested on a warrant for fraudulent schemes and theft

30 year old Heidi Godoy was arrested on a child support warrant.

 A theft report was taken at a residence on Remington.

Basic Computer Classes in May at Globe Library


The Globe Public Library will have several classes during the month of May to teach you computer basics.

Learn the basics of using a computer, keyboard and mouse on Tuesday, May 7 at 2:30pm or  Friday, May 10 at 10:am.

You’ll find out how to set up and use personal email on Friday, May 17 at 10:am.

Learn how set up and use a Facebook account on Tuesday, May 28 at 2:30pm.

The Globe Library will also have a basic class on how to design, format and write a resume. Attend that class on Tuesday, May 21 at 2:30pm or Friday, May 24 at 10:am.

Globe School Board Strategic Planning Meeting


The Globe School Board holds a Strategic Planning Meeting on Wednesday at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

The meeting is open to the public.

Miami 'Picnic in the Park' May 11


The Town of Miami will hold its “Picnic in the Park” on Saturday, May 11 at 11:am. The cost is $5 a person.

The menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers, chili beans, drinks and dessert.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon  on North Broad Street.

Last night Globe Police arrested 23 year old Rachelle Dorame  for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

Officers are investigating a report of shoplifting at a business on Hill Street; a theft from a vehicle on South Sixth Street; a theft from a vehicle on East Cedar Street; and a theft at a residence on Fegan.

The Gila County Sheriff’s office is investigating a theft on Copper Cities Road.

One person refused medical treatment after an accident involving a motorcycle yesterday afternoon at Highway 60 and Old Oak.

Nobody was hurt in an accident late Friday night near the Shamrock Bar

A woman at Community Bridges was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center on Friday after cutting her wrists.

Globe Fire Department responded to a brush fire Friday afternoon near a business on Highway 60. Four juveniles were referred to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Miami Police arrested 20 year old Kevin Swedick on warrants for theft and disorderly conduct.

43 year old Daniel Flores was arrested on a warrant for aggravated assault involving a weapon.

23 year old Nathan Harper was arrested for domestic violence/assault and disorderly conduct.

On Saturday Globe Police arrested 56 year old Raymond Tucker for burglary.

29 year old Richard Murphy was arrested for shoplifting at Walmart.

36 year old Donna Benally was arrested for DUI.

20 year old Michael Weber was arrested Friday night for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Globe Police are investigating an assault report taken at a residence on North Main Street; shoplifting at the Hill Street Safeway; criminal damage at a residence on South Sixth Street; criminal damage at a residence on South Third; criminal damage at a business on East Ash;  and a theft at a business on Broad Street.

On Saturday, Phoenix Police arrested 45 year old Edward Anderson of Globe on a failure to pay warrant for driving with a suspended license.

On Friday, Mesa Police arrested 38 year old Lawrence Barton of Miami on warrants for disorderly conduct and assault.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft at a residence on Lancaster; a report of a stolen bicycle taken at a residence on Glendale Avenue;  an attempted break-in on Story Street; and illegal dumping in the area of Pinal Creek Road.

Longtime resident Lena Guttry passed away April 15 at Archstone Care Center in Chandler. She was 86. She is survived by 4 stepchildren and 12 grandchildren.
Services for Lena Guttry will be private.

Miami Town Council Meets Tonight at 6:30


Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

There will be a presentation about the Resolution Copper project.

The Council will consider a Resolution authorizing an application for Community Development Block Grant funds.

An Executive Session includes legal advice for hiring a new Police Chief.

The Miami Wastewater Advisory Board Meeting that had been scheduled for 5:00 today (Monday) has been cancelled.

Globe Council Meets Tonight at 6:00


Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

Presentations include recognition by the White Mountain Masonic Lodge of Sgt. “A.J.” Castaneda as Officer of the Year.

The Council will proclaim May 3 Day of Prayer and May 11 as Letter Carriers Food Drive Day.

There will be a Public Hearing about a proposed Access to Care Fee which would only affect Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

The Council will consider a Resolution that sets a date for a municipal election, inlcuding the deadline for voter registration, and the place and last date for candidates to file nomination papers.

The agenda also includes authorization to increase the City’s  water and wastewater utility rates.
