Globe Council Meets Monday


Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm.

The Council will designate the week of July 7 as Cancer Awareness Week in the City of Globe
.
There will be a Public Hearing on the Home Rule Option and the Council will vote on it during the meeting.

The meeting also includes presentations about the budget and the Strategic Plan.

The Council will also discuss City parking codes and special use permits for the Cutter Wells.

Police Log


One person was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center after a two vehicle collision yesterday afternoon on Highway 60. One driver was cited for failure to control speed to a avoid a collision. One car was towed.

There was a three vehicle accident yesterday morning on North Broad Street.

Nobody was hurt in a one vehicle accident last night near the Globe Dog Park.

Officers are investigating a report of shoplifting at a business on East Ash.

Gila County Sheriff’s Deputies and medical personnel responded to a report of an assault at the Shamrock Bar late Wednesday night. One person was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. 55 year old Rick Ortega was arrested, cited and released for disorderly conduct.

The Sheriff’s Office served two warrants to 25 year old inmate Anthony Stewart for failure to pay on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and failure to pay on charges of driving with a suspended license and false reporting to law enforcement.

Deputies took a  theft report  at a residence on Sharps Road.

Obituary


Marion Allene Powell of Boone, Colorado passed away May 11. She was 84. She is survived by 6 children, including Peggy Miller, William Powell and Chuck Powell of Globe; her sister; her brother; 48 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Visitation for Marion Powell is tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:am in the Relief Society Room at the Globe Stake Center. The funeral follows at 10:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Globe.

Register for Globe Summer Swim Classes


Registration begins today (Thursday) for the Globe summer swim season.

You can register your children today from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Hill Street Safeway and from 5 to 7:pm  Friday at the Claypool Safeway.

There will be different skill levels offered to children from 15 months to 16 years old.

The first session begins Monday, June 10. The price for most swimming lesson classes is $30.

Registration forms are available at Copper Rim and High Desert Middle School in Globe and Las Lomas and Charles Bejarano School in Miami.

Republicans Meet Saturday


The Cobre Valley Republican Club will have their monthly meeting on Saturday at 9:30am at the Club Headquarters on North Broad Street in Globe.

Miami Library Book Sale


The Friends of the Miami Memorial library are having their dollar a bag book sale during the month of May. 

There are also “like new” hardcover books for $1 and paperbacks for 50 cents.

All proceeds from the book sales are used to buy new books and supplies for the library.

Miami Spring Clean Up on Saturday


A Spring Clean Up Day will be held in Miami on Saturday (May 18)  from 9:am until noon.

The goal is to sweep and clean garbage and debris in the area from South Depot to South Latham Blvd.

Safety vests, plastic bags, rubber gloves and shovels will be provided.

Volunteers will meet in front of Bullion Plaza at 8:am on Saturday.

Sign Up for Swimming Lessons at Miami Hostetler Pool


Sign up your child for swimming lessons at the Miami Hostetler Pool  on Friday (May 17) from 10 until 2    at Fry’s and any time  at Miami Town Hall.

Swimming lessons  begin on Monday, June 3. They will be held Monday through Thursday until June 13.

Benefit for Scott Family


A benefit for the Scott family will be held on Friday (May 17) at the Old Mine Shaft Restaurant in Miami.

The family lost everything in a fire on April 23.

Fifty percent of the money taken in that day will be donated to the Scott family.

The restaurant opens at 11:am on Friday and closes at 9:pm.

During the event Gus Park will perform an Elvis tribute.

Summer Reading Program Planning Meeting on Friday


A planning meeting for Summer Reading Program volunteers will be held at the Globe Public Library on Friday (May 17) at 3:pm.

Ideas are needed for stories, songs, games and crafts.

The Summer Reading Program will be held for six weeks on Wednesday and Thursday mornings beginning June 12.

The program is designed to encourage children to continue to read during summer vacation. Children participate in crafts, stories, guest speakers, and more.

If you would like to help, attend the volunteers meeting next Friday.

The Globe Public Library Summer Reading Program kicks off on Friday, June 7 with Arizona Rick - The Magical Balloon Making Cowboy.

Land Swap Gets Committee Approval


The Resolution Copper land swap legislation has cleared one of its congressional hurdles.

The bill was approved yesterday (Wednesday) by the House Resources Committee.

Emergency Road Work on SR 188


An emergency road closure or long delay could affect travel today (Thursday) on State Route 188 just east of Roosevelt.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is assisting Salt River Project with the removal of a large rock which is attached to a retention line supporting a power pole on an embankment above and next to the highway.

A two vehicle collision resulted in  minor injuries yesterday afternoon on East Ash.

Miami Police arrested 39 year old Patricia Hamilton yesterday for disorderly conduct.

Globe Police arrested 43 year old Kyle Cook for disorderly conduct at a business on South Broad Street.

An investigation into a shoplifting incident resulted in the arrest of 29 year old Travis Lane.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a stolen car report taken on Wilson Place and an assault that occurred Tuesday night in the area of Hope Lane.

A Celebration of Life for Penny Brenton will be held Saturday (May 18) at 2:pm at the Pinal Mountain Elks Lodge.
Lunch will be served as part of this special gathering. They ask that you wear bright colors because that it is what Penny requested.

Mental Health Awareness Event This Saturday


Southeastern Arizona Behavioral Health Services invites you to their Mental Health Awareness event this Saturday (May 18).

Several agencies are coming together for this event for  National Mental Health Awareness Month. They’ll have information to help you see the signs and what to do for someone who might have a mental illness.

There will also be a free barbecue lunch.

The event is from 9:am until Noon on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Globe.


Globe Library Summer Reading Program


The Globe Public Library Summer Reading Program begins Wednesday, June 12.

The summer program is designed to encourage children to continue reading during the summer so that they don’t lose their reading skills. Children participate in crafts, stories, guest speakers and more.

The program will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:am until Noon. The Wednesday program is for children going into the first through third grades. The Thursday program is for children going into the fourth through sixth grades.

Resolution Copper Presentation Tonight at Bullion Plaza


Tonight’s (Wednesday) program in the Miami Hardscrabble series is a presentation by Resolution Copper mining and environmental staff members. They’ll give a project update and answer questions about the proposed underground mine near Superior.

The program begins at 6:30 tonight at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

The Hardscrabble programs are open to the public at no charge. Light refreshments are offered after the presentation.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy took a report of a theft of a bicycle in Alhambra Mobile Home Park

Gila County School Resource Officers took a  theft report at Charles Bejarano School and a report of disorderly conduct at Miami High School.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident late yesterday morning on West Oak Street.

There was a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on East Monroe Street.

No injuries were reported in a one vehicle accident yesterday evening on East Ash Street.

Miami Police arrested 33 year old Patrick Martinez on a warrant for disorderly conduct.

Globe Police are investigating criminal damage on East Bailey Street; a theft from a vehicle on East Mesquite Street; shoplifting at a business on Highway 60; a harassment report taken at a residence on East Blazer; and a report of an incorrigible juvenile taken at  a residence on East Sycamore.

There was a two vehicle accident Saturday morning in the area of Yucca Drive. A report was taken and the case is pending further investigation.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 52 year old Keith Williams at a residence on Yuma for domestic violence and aggravated assault.

28 year old Marcus Packard was arrested for shoplifting last night at a business on East Ash Street.

36 year old Shannon Reves was arrested Saturday night for domestic violence and assault.

38 year old Jeremy Smith was arrested Saturday for burglary.

Officers are investigating an assault in the area of Monroe Street; criminal damage at a residence on North Sutherland; criminal damage at a residence on Sycamore; criminal damage at a business on East Ash Street; a theft at a residence on Holder Drive; a theft at a residence on North Broad Street; and a theft at a business on Highway 60.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office detained a 13 year old juvenile for possession and cultivation of marijuana.

37 year old Jennifer Maldonado was charged with child endangerment after allowing her children to play on the roof of  their house.

On Saturday 51 year old Jeffrey Kobza was arrested for possession of marijuana and DUI.

31 year old Mariette Lewis was arrested on Friday for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

Deputies are investigating a report of a stolen motorcycle..

Eleanora Steele of San Carlos passed away May 9 at Copper Cottage Hospice in Mesa. She was 56. She is survived by 5 children; her sister; and 2 brothers.
The wake for Eleanora Steele is Wednesday at 6:am at World Evangelism Revival Center. The funeral is at 1:pm.



Walliman Clark, Sr. passed away May 9 at his home in Peridot. He was 63. He is survived by his wife Renna and 4 children.
Visitation for Walliman Clark is Tuesday at 6:am at Grace Lutheran Church in San Carlos. The funeral is at 10:00.
