Obituary

Visitation for William Escobedo is tomorrow (Saturday) at 8:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 8:30 and Mass is at 9:00.
Interment is at Pinal Mountain Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Jane Eck Memorial Golf Tournament

The Jane Eck Memorial Golf Tournamant will be held Saturday (May 17) at Gold Canyon Golf Resort.

Jane Eck was the director of the Globe Active Adult Center and a champion for the Meals on Wheels program.

The cost of the four person scrambler is $125 a player, which includes a donation to Meals on Wheels.

Non-golfers can participate in the luncheon and the silent auction. The cost is $40, which also includes a donation.

Cornhole Tournament to Cure Lupus

A Cornhole Tournament to raise funds to cure Lupus takes place Saturday (May 17) at the Globe Community Center Upper Ramada.

The cost to enter is $30 a team.

Registration begins at 10:45am and the tournament starts at 11:45.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams and there’s a 50/50 raffle.


Armed Forces Day Luncheon

The Cobre Valley Republican Club is having an Armed Forces Day Luncheon on Saturday at 11:30am at the Globe Elks Club.

Special guest speakers are Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu  and Gila County Attorney Bradley Beauchamp.

Tickets are $25 for one person, $45 for two.

Copper Valley Relay for Life May 16-17

The Copper Valley Relay for Life will take place on Friday and Saturday (May 16 and 17) at Harbison Field.

During the relay, teams camp overnight on the football field and have at least one team member walking laps at all times. There is entertainment throughout the night, with food, games and activities for all ages.


American Legion Spaghetti Dinner

The American Legion is hosting a Spaghetti dinner tomorrow (Friday) from 5 to 7:pm.

Proceeds go to the Sons of the American Legion programs.


Police Log

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25 year old Tawni Drennon for domestic violence, disorderly conduct and possesssion of drug paraphernalia.

The Gila County Task Force arrested 27 year old Jennifer Herrera for possession of drug paraphernalia.

28 year old Jessica Morales was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

GCC Governing Board Meets Thursday

The Gila Community College Governing Board meets Thursday  at 10:am in Room 522 at the Gila Pueblo Campus.

The meeting includes a Public Hearing and possible action on the proposed 2014-2015 budget.


Boys and Girls Club Summer Day Camp

The Globe Boys and Girls Club will have Summer Day Camp from Monday, June 2 through Friday, August 1. This is a safe and positive place for kids to be while not in school. It’s for ages 5 to 14.

The Summer Day Camp will be from 7:am until 6:pm daily at the Club on S. Hagen Road,  near the Community Center.

The cost is $25 a week for one child, $40 per family. Financial assistance is available.

North Pine Street Closed Thursday for Railroad Track Repairs

The City of Globe announces that North Pine Street will be closed tomorrow (Thursday) between Oak Street and Sycamore Street

The street will be closed from 6:am to 4:pm during repairs of the railroad tracks.


Police Log

Globe Police arrested 31 year old Stephanie Marr yesterday after a two vehicle collision on East Maple Street. Marr was charged with extreme DUI, driving under the influence of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

35 year old Anthony Cosen was arrested at a business on South Hill Street for failure to comply on a charge of underage consumption.

Peter Bigfoot Presentation at Miami Hardscrabble Series

Peter Bigfoot is the guest speaker at the Miami Hardscrabble Series on Wednesday (May 14) at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum. The presentation starts at 6:30pm.

He will be talking about his excursion on foot across the desert and his way of life away from cities and towns in Arizona.

There is no charge, and light refreshments will be served following the program.


Globe Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament

The Globe Branch of the East Valley Boys and Girls Clubs will hold the 6th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 7, at the Apache Stronghold Golf Course.

The cost $75 a golfer or $225 for a three person scramble team. Breakfast and lunch is included.

Police Log

The Gila County Violent Gang and Drug Unit arrested 33 year old Mark Stidham on warrants for aggravated assault, custodial interference and child support.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office in Idaho arrested 29 year old Amber Carroll of Miami on a warrant for attempted fraudulent schemes, criminal impersonation, forgery and theft.


Obituary

Simon Antonio passed away May 8 at his home in San Carlos. He was 56.
The wake for “Peter” Antonio is Friday (May 16) at 4:pm at the Boni residence in San Carlos. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm at Burdette Hall.


Supervisors Meet Today

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets today (Tuesday) at 10:am.

The agenda includes an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Gila Community College District to provide an $84,000 economic development grant for the site preparation for a cosmetology lab at the Payson campus.

Police Log

Last night Globe Police arrested 24 year old Jessica Smith for organized retail theft at a business on South Hill Street.

On Saturday 37 year old Roy Reyes, Jr. was arrested for possession of dangerous drugs, possession of narcotics, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Reyes also had outstanding warrants for child support, criminal trespass and driving with a suspended license.

54 year old Christina Barajas was cited and later released for DUI and a passenger was cited for open container.

42 year old Jose Rodriguez was cited and later released for DUI.

24 year old Aaron Gray was arrested for DUI.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Christobal Ortiz on a failure to pay warrant for assault.



Obituary

Judy A. Davenport of Globe passed away May 6 at Banner Baywood Heart Hospital in Mesa. She was 64.
Visitation for Judy Davenport will be Friday from 5 to 7:pm at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is Saturday at 11:am.


Globe Council Meets Tonight at 6:00

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

The Council will discuss the City-wide Sign and Pavement Striping Inventory; the Broadtreet Pavement Rehabilitation Project; and the Oak Street/Hill Street Pavement Rehabilitation and Hill Street Sidewalk Installaton Project.

The agenda includes a Resolution submitting to the voters the question of whether a franchise is granted to Arizona Public Service Company.

The Council will proclaim May 26 as National Poppy Day.

There will be a presentation of the White Mountain Masonic Officer of the Year to Globe Police Officer Kalen Trimble; a badge presentation to Arson K-9 Evo; and the annual reports from the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation and the Globe-Miami Chamber of commerce.


Miami Council Meets Tonight at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

The Council will consider renewing the appointment of  Rebecca Baeza as Miami Town Magistrate; a Permanent Adjustment to the Base Expenditure Limit and referring it to the voters; and an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation for federal funds for the design of retaining walls on Orphan Road and Highland Avenue.

The Council will also consider directing the Town Attorney to prepare an ordinance to require drilling permits for all mineral drilling within the Town, and an ordinance to prohibit destruction of Town property and to establish penalties.

The Miami School Board meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30pm in the Miami High School Library.
