I-10 Will Be Closed This Weekend Near Downtown Phoenix

The Arizona Department of Transportation says that if you are planning a trip to Phoenix this weekend, be aware that I-10 will be closed near downtown Phoenix due to an APS power line project.

ADOT suggests that you allow for extra travel time and use alternate routes if possible.


Hayden Man Convicted of Killing His Ex-Wife

(CORRECTION:) The original version of this story said Ortega was sentenced to 46 years. This was incorrect. Ortega was found guilty but not sentenced. Sentencing will be on June 2. I apologize for the mistake.--Roland

A Hayden man has been convicted of killing his ex-wife with a knife.

The Gila County Attorney’s Office says 38 year old Guillermo Ortego III was found guilty of second degree murder, attempted second degree murder and aggravated assault. 

Prosecutors say Ortega attacked his ex-wife in her home on April 28, 2013. She suffered fatal injuries to her neck. Her brother heard the struggle and came to her aid and was wounded in the chest and neck with the same knife.

Ortega will be sentenced on June 2 in Globe.


Globe PD Warns of Scam

The Globe Police Department is warning citizens about a scam that is occurring in the community. There have been text messages and calls over land lines claiming to be from the IRS.

If you get one of these messages or phone calls, don’t send money to the location given. The IRS does not request money this way. This is a scam.

Last night Globe Police arrested 28 year old Jessica Morales at a business on Highway 60 for domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

Mesa Police arrested 34 year old Anthony Guerra of Miami on a child support warrant.

Letter Carriers Collecting Food Donations

The National Association of Letter Carriers will be collecting non-perishable food items Saturday for distribution to  local food banks.

Please place a food donation by your mailbox on Saturday morning. Your letter carrier will pick up your donation and deliver it to the food bank.


Mother's Day Dinner

The American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a special Mother’s Day Dinner on Friday starting at 5:pm.

The cost is $7, which includes a chance to win a basket of goodies.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Richard Woodard for resisting arrest, trafficking in stolen property and fraudulent schemes.

21 year old Zachary Bejarano was cited and released for failure to control a vehicle to avoid an accident and for leaving the scene of an accident.

40 year old Kimberly Tuttle was cited and released for driving with a suspended license and no seat belt.

22 year old Justin Yancy was cited for driving with a suspended license and for speeding.

Globe Police arrested 22 year old Catherine Heath on a failure to comply warrant for assault and disorderly conduct.

41 year old John Willard and 40 year old Kimberly Tuttle were arrested for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60. Willard was also charged with assault.

28 year old Dawn Domina was arrested at a traffic stop for use and possession of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.


Obituary

Melva Jean Truax of Peridot passed away May 4 at San Carlos Indian Hospital. She was 37.
The wake for Melva Truax is Friday (May 9) at 4:pm at the Carol Hoffman residence. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm.


GCC Commencement Tonight

The Gila Community College commencement ceremonies will take place today (Thursday) at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

Grief Awareness Event on August 30

Southeastern Arizona Behavioral Health Services is having a free community event on National Grief Awareness Day, August 30.

The event will focus on grief after a loved one has passed away and how to cope.

It’s from 9:am until 1:pm, Saturday, August 30, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Sign Up for WIC Food Boxes

The Gila County WIC Department will be at the Miami Senior Center on Tuesday, May 27 from 9:am until 2:pm to certify income eligible seniors for free monthly food boxes.

The Gila County Drug, Gang and Violent Crimes Task Force arrested 34 year old Vicki Benavidez for possession of a narcotic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

28 year old Audrey Poeling was arrested for possession of a narcotic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

31 year old Johnny Cassadore was arrested for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

34 year old Brianne Herrera was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for DUI.


Globe Library Has Free Basic Internet Classes

Starting today (Wednesday) the Globe Public Library is having free Basic Internet classes every Wednesday at 5:30pm.

Globe School Board Meets Today

The Globe School Board meets today (Wednesday) in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

It starts at 5:45pm with a Public Hearing about the Revised 2013-2014 budget.

Teen Maze

Parents are invited to attend the teen maze on Tuesday (May 6) from 4 to 8:pm at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

The teen maze focuses on the consequences of teenage sexual activity.

If your teen is in the 8th or 9th grade, they can attend with their school on Wednesday (May 7), as long as you sign their permission slip.


'Cure to End Lupus Now' Cornhole Tournament on May 17

A Cornhole Tournament to raise funds for Lupus will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Globe Community Center Upper Ramada.

The cost to enter is $30 a team.

Registration begins at 10:45am with the tournament starting at Noon.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.


SR 77 Bridge Replacement Halfway Complete

The Arizona Department of Transportation began a project in November to reconstruct the Dripping Springs Wash Bridge on State Route 77, eight miles north of Winkelman.

The project is now halfway complete and is on schedule to be finished mid-summer.

Work is being done on half the bridge at a time. The northbound lane has just been completed. Work is now shifting to the southbound portion of the bridge and traffic will be using the newly constructed northbound lane.

A traffic signal is regulating traffic across the bridge in alternating directions.

Work hours are 6:am to 4:30pm Monday through Thursday.


Six Shooter Canyon Road Chip Sealing May 20-21

The Gila County Roads Department will be chip-sealing Six Shooter Canyon Road on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20 and 21, from 6:am to 5:pm.

There may be delays up to 10 minutes, due to large equipment and heavy truck traffic.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 49 year old Philip Drennan for disorderly conduct at a residence on East Cactus.

Graham County Sheriff’s Office arrested 49 year old Paula Antonio of San Carlos on a failure to comply warrant for issuing a bad check.


Obituary

Antonio M. Pulido passed away May 4 at his home in Miami. He was 88.

A Memorial Service for “Tony” Pulido will be held Saturday (May 10) at 10:30am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Supervisors Meet Today

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets this morning (Tuesday) at 10:00.

The Supervisors will proclaim May “National Drug Court Month” and "Building Safety Month.”

They will consider grant applications for speed enforcement and a communications upgrade.

Police Log

Firefighters from Miami, Globe and Canyon Fire Departments responded to a structure fire yesterday morning on Indian Circle in Miami. Arriving units found an abandoned structure fully engulfed in fire. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other homes but two cars parked next to the structure were burned. The fire also burned power lines above the building, causing them to fall to the ground. Residents in the area were without power until the lines were repaired.

Globe Police arrested 40 year old Michael Hill late last night for aggravated DUI.

On Saturday, officers arrested 36 year old Artisha Sanchez at a residence on South Highland Drive after a report of a hit and run collision. Sanchez was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

39 year old Aaron Earven was arrested Saturday night for extreme DUI.

53 year old Jo Ann Goss was arrested for DUI.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 50 year old Eberto Hernandez at a residence on Hammond Street for aggravated assault/domestic violence and kidnapping.
