High School Seniors May Apply to National Youth Science Camp


The Governor’s Office and the Arizona Department of Education are currently taking applications from high school seniors for the 2013 National Youth Science Camp.

Two Arizona high school seniors will receive a full scholarship to exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. The nearly month long experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation. There will also be overnight camping trips and a visit to Washington, D.C.

Selected delegates must demonstrate both academic achievement in science and the potential for thoughtful scientific leadership.

Application packets are available on the National Youth Science Camp website at www.nysc.org. Applications must be received by February 15.


Police Log


Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning near Walmart.

Globe Police arrested two people for trafficking in stolen property. 20 year old Morgan Gaona and 19 year old Alex Rodriguez were booked into the Gila County Jail.

Officers are investigating a report of child neglect taken at a residence on Palo Verde Lane and  an assault report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

Obituary

Aris Valene White of Globe passed away Tuesday at Hospice of Arizona Greenfield House in Mesa. She was 85.
Visitation for Aris White is tomorrow (Saturday) at 1:pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Claypool. The funeral is at 2:00.

GCSO Looking for Missing California Man

The Gila County Sheriff's Office is looking for a missing California man who may be the victim of foul play.

Fifty year old David Mark Fink was last heard from on January 13 when he called his brother in Las Vegas. He told his brother that he was leaving the Phoenix area and that he was going to travel through Globe to take care of an errand, and then drive straight through to Las Vegas. He was driving a black Volvo with California plates.

Fink's car was found at the bottom of the Salt River Canyon. Blood was found in the front of his vehicle but Fink was not in the car or found in the surrounding area.

It appears that Fink may have suffered a head or facial injury.

David Fink is 6'4", 190 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair.

If anyone traveling through the Salt River Canyon between January 13 through the 20th saw Fink or his car pulled over to the side of the road, or saw him talking with anyone, or any other suspicious activity, please contact Detective  Emmett Dickison at the Gila County Sheriff's Office at 402-4311.

GMCCA Presents 'Bartholomew Faire'

The Globe-Miami Community Concert Association presents the musical group Bartholomew Faire tonight  (Thursday) at 7:pm in the Miami High School Auditorium.

 The program includes “early music” from folk to jazz to classical.

Police Log


US  60 was closed for awhile last night after a semi truck lost part of its haul on the highway.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle hit and run accident yesterday afternoon on Highway 60. The case is under investigation

The driver who left the scene of a hit and run yesterday morning on Broad Street was located and cited.

Globe Police arrested 34 year old Norberta Joaquin for aggravated DUI.

24 year old Reylin Helgeson was arrested last night for DUI.

50 year old inmate Anthony Mirro received additional charges of fraud at the Gila County Jail.

Officers are investigating a burglary on Banker Avenue.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of identity theft taken at a residence on Calle De Loma; a fraud report taken at a residence on Globe Canyon; and a burglary at the Caretto Ranch.

Obituary


Sadie Thompson Randall of San Carlos passed away January 16 at Heritage Healthcare Center. She was 79. She is survived by 2 brothers; 8 children; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
The wake  is tomorrow (Friday) at 4:pm at the Sadie Randall residence. The funeral is Saturday at 2:pm at Burdette Hall.

Police Log


Last night Globe Police arrested 22 year old Ashley Roberts for possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.

33 year old Lorenza Cruz was arrested on a child support warrant.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 50 year old Anthony Mirro at a residence on Grover Canyon on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Virginia Reyes passed away Monday night at her home in Globe. She was 85.
Visitation for Virginia Reyes is Saturday at 9:am at  Holy Angels Catholic Church. Rosary is at 9:30. Mass is at 10:00.

Globe Active Adult Center will have a presentation this morning (Tuesday) about the latest scams and how to protect yourself from them. It starts at 11:15am.

MHS Curriculum Night


Miami High School Curriculum Night starts tonight (Tuesday) at 6:pm.

Parents will have the opportunity to receive information about  2013-2014 registration, dual enrollment courses, and courses with the Cobre Valley Institute of  Technology.

Aguila Youth Leadership will give a presentation and the organization Not My Kid will have a parent presentation about  bullying.

Author and Poet Ricardo Lucero Passed Away Sunday

Author and poet Ricardo Lucero passed away Sunday.

Lucero grew up in Globe, and Globe was the setting for many of his writings.

Supervisors Meet Today


The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets today (Tuesday) at 10:am.

The Supervisors will elect a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman.

The agenda also includes approval of the hiring of Shawn Fuller to be Chief Deputy County Attorney.

Arizona Grandparent Coalition Summit This Saturday


This Saturday (January 26) the Second Annual Arizona Grandparent Ambassadors Community Outreach and Advocacy Summit will be held at the Casa Grande Holiday Inn. It’s from 9:am to 3:pm.

There are currently about 70,000 chldren in Arizona who are being raised by their grandparents or other relatives instead of their parents for at least part of their childhood.

Grandparents and other kinship caregivers  from around the state have come together to form the Arizona Grandparent Ambassador Coalition.

The Coalition has launched a new website to help kinship caregivers to come together, share experiences and offer support. It’s at AZGA.org.

A car hit a pedestrian Friday morning at the intersection of Broad and Blake Street. The pedestrian was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident Friday afternoon on North Broad Street.

Yesterday a Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy served 2 warrants to 24 year old inmate Leon Brown of Florence. The first was for attempted murder/aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The second was a Maricopa County warrant for possession of burglary tools.

Two people were arrested Friday morning after  a deputy did a welfare check on Railroad Avenue. 32 year old Michael Castaneda and 35 year old Pamela Vanta were arrested for child neglect.

A deputy cited and released 20 year old Brian Tavares for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of trespassing on Central Drive and a disturbance in Pinto Creek Mobile Home Park.

On Saturday Globe Police arrested 30 year old Gregory Dillon for domestic assault at a residence on Fourth Street.

37 year old Joseph Spottedtail was arrested for aggravated assault after a disturbance at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

Three juveniles were referred to juvenile probation for shoplifting at the Hill Street Safeway.

34 year old Leticia Rocha was arrested late Friday night for DUI.

29 year old Heidi Godoy was arrested on a child support warrant.

Officers are investigating a fraud report taken at a business on Highway 60; a burglary at a business on North Broad Street; a burglary at a residence on South First Street; a theft at McDonalds; criminal damage to a vehicle at Horne Motor Company; and criminal damage to a vehicle on Yuma Street.
