Local B of A Branch Switches to Washington Federal This Weekend

Today (Friday) is the day that the local Bank of America branch begins the switch to Washington Federal.

Washington Federal recently purchased 23 small Bank of America branches, including the Globe branch.

The local Bank of America will close today (Friday) at noon and reopen on Monday as Washington Federal.

Customers can begin using their Washington Federal ATM cards today at 5:pm. Access to your Bank of America account will be cut off at 7:pm.

Washington Federal will email temporary passwords for online banking on Sunday. You can begin online banking with Washington Federal on Monday.


Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 64 year old Arrowwood Dewey at a business on North Broad Street for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

37 year old Christopher Martin, Jr. was arrested early this morning at a residence on South Hill Street for misconduct involving a weapon.

48 year old Alriquez Manuel was arrested last night for aggravated DUI.

62 year old Maria Kelly was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

31 year old Michele Tidwell was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 80 year old Clarence Harden for trespassing.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Raphael Coppen of Globe on a failure to comply warrant for domestic violence/threats and intimidation.

Arboretum to be Discussed at First Friday Program

Boyce Thompson Arboretum Executive Director Mark Siegwarth  will be the speaker at the  First Friday program at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

He will talk about the history of the museum and the treasures from all over the world that are displayed there.

The free presentation starts at 6:30pm on Friday (May 2).


Copper Cities Players Present 'The Miss Firecracker Contest'

The Copper Cities Community Players will present performances of “The Miss Firecracker Contest” on Friday and Saturday (May 2 and 3) and again next Saturday, May 10. A special Mother’s Day performance will be held on Sunday, May 11 after a Mother’s Day Tea.

Holy Angels Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

The Holy Angels Catholic Church Cinco de Mayo Fiesta begins Saturday (May 3) at 10:am in the Old Dominion parking lot.

There will be lots of traditional Mexican food and entertainment throughout the day. A Kids Korner includes games, pinata breaks and a jumping castle.

The Globe Knights of Columbus will host the Beer and Margarita Garden.


Miami Library Book Sale Begins Saturday

The Miami Memorial Library’s Spring Book Sale starts Saturday (May 3) and continues through May 31.

It kicks off Saturday with an Open House including refreshments.

There is always a great selection of new books for $1 each, and bags full of slightly used books for $1 a bag.


Butcher Hook Cinco de Mayo Horseshoe Tournament

The Butcher Hook 19th Annual Cinco de Mayo Horseshoe Tournament begins tomorrow (Saturday) with sign up at 10:am.

There is a $10 a person entry fee.

They will have food and drinks available all day.

Apache Bow Hunters

The Apache Bow Hunters will have the third leg of the Arizona Triple Crown on Saturday (May 3) at the Red McLachlon Archery Range in Globe.

San Pedro River Festival

The San Pedro River Festival is this Saturday (May 3)  in Winkelman. It’s sponsored by the Arizona Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy and Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition.

The day-long family event is for nature lovers, birders, and anyone who wants to spend a beautiful day outdoors enjoying  the area near the San Pedro and Gila Rivers.

The Festival includes free live entertainment and a kids activity zone at the Winkelman Flats public park on the Gila River. That’s just south of the junction of State Route 77 and State Route 177.

Obituary

Peter R. Rodriguez passed away April 17. He was 64.
He is survived by his wife Julie Schroeder; 2 sons; his mother Erlinda; 2 sisters; his brother; and 4 grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Peter Rodriguez will be held Saturday (May 3) between 5 and 7:pm at Angels Cremation and Burial in Mesa.

Slavic Anniversary Celebration at Bullion Plaza

The Bullion Plaza Museum’s Slavic Community is hosting the second annual Slavic Anniversary Celebration this Saturday (May 3) in the Gym from 4 to 7:pm.

There will be a dinner of traditional Slavic cuisine and live music. Dinner tickets are $30 a person.

Visitation for Nancy Stone is Saturday (May3) from 3 to 5:pm at Lamont Mortuary, and Sunday (May 4) at 11:am at Divine Grace Presbyterian Church. The funeral is Sunday at 1:pm at the church.

Globe Library Hosts 'Pushing the Limits'

The Globe Public Library will host a free four-part reading, viewing and discussion series for adults and adolescents. It’s called “Pushing the Limits.”

The series brings together books and video featuring authors, scientists and everyday people who explore the natural world.

The Introductory Session will be held on Thursday (May 1) at 6:pm at the library. Other discussions and events will be held on Thursday evenings until August 28.

The Globe Public Library is one of twenty public libraries across the country receiving grants as pilot sites to host the series that will be extended to 100 more rural libraries in the United States.

May Events at Globe Active Adult Center

Globe Active Adult Center will be holding computer classes again beginning Thursday, May 8 at 9:30am.

The Alzheimer’s Support Group meets Wednesday, May 14 at 12:15pm. There will be a conference presented by the Alzheimer’s Association on Friday, May 16 at Globe City Hall.

Copper Communities Hospice will do blood pressure checks on Friday, May 9.

Bess Bennett is at the Center from 9:am until Noon every Monday to help with Medicare questions.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 48 year old Marvin Anderson  on a failure to comply warrant for criminal trespassing.

A juvenile was referred to the Juvenile Detention Center for possession of marijuana.

29 year old Perry Stapleton was arrested yesterday on a child support warrant.


Obituaries

Adriana Raquel Madrid of Goodyear passed away April 26 in Phoenix. She was 4 years old.
Visitation for Adriana Madrid is Friday (May 2) at 8:30am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Globe Plants Tree for Arbor Day

Last Friday the City of Globe planted a tree for Arbor Day.

A young cottonwood tree was planted next to the tee-pee on South Broad Street.

The Globe City Council invites everyone to stop by and see the new tree, and maybe take a picture to share with your family in the future.


GCC Commencement

The Gila Community College 2014 commencement ceremony for the Gila Pueblo and San Carlos campuses will be held on Thursday, May 8 at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School auditorium.

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Michael Whipple for domestic violence/disorderly conduct and assault.

22 year old Andrew Galloway was arrested for burglary.

25 year old Latisha Reyes was arrested for possession of stolen property.

18 year old  James Coombs was arrested on a warrant for shoplifting.

Late last night Globe Police arrested 38 year old Domie Mandicino for aggravated DUI, use of marijuana, use of damgerous drugs, driving with a suspended license, and false reporting to law enforcement.

18 year old Jazmin Urguidy was arrested for theft at a business on Ragus Road.

21 year old Deidre Hickman was arrested on a warrant for use of a dangerous drug.

Meeting About Common Core Standards

There will be a meeting in Globe tomorrow (Tuesday) about Common Core.

Expect More Arizona will give the presentation at 5:30am at High Desert Middle School.


New VA Clinic in Gilbert

There’s a new VA clinic in Gilbert. It is expected to serve at least 14,000 veterans.

The official ribbon cutting took place on Saturday.


Miami Town Council Meets Tonight at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

The Council will consider approving Community Development Block Grant funds for Miami’s Streets Improvement Project; buying or leasing a garbage truck; and updates to Miami Veterans Memorial Park rules and regulations.

The Council will also appoint three members to the Municipal Property Corporation.


Globe City Council Meets Tonight

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

The Council will consider a change in water and wastewater rates and fees; a National Criminal History Improvement Program Grant application; and a five year Capital Improvement Plan.
