Globe GCC Board Members Vote Against Resolution

Gila Community College Board members from Globe have held up a resolution that would support the attempts to make the college independent from Eastern Arizona College. The resolution would have made official the board’s desire to change the state’s financial thresholds that restrict Gila County from operating its own community college.

The Payson Roundup reports that Board Chairman Robert Ashford—who has just won reelection to the Board—promised Senator Sylvia Allen two weeks ago that he would vote for it. The paper reports that Allen also says that Ashford promised to introduce a similar resolution to the Gila County Board of Supervisors.

But Ashford said at the meeting last Thursday that he didn’t have enough information to decide if he favored the resolution. He said that, even though he is on the task force that has been studying the issue for the past several months. Board members Armida Bittner and Bernadette Kniffen also said they needed more information about the task force and proposed legislation.

Allen told the Roundup she knows that there is friction between northern and southern Gila County concerning the college, but she says this was an issue she thought could move them past that.

The two Payson board members voted in favor of the resolution. All three of the Globe members voted against it.
