Former Arizona Governor Rose Mofford published an Opinion piece in Monday’s Arizona Republic announcing her plans to move the Rose Mofford Collection of historical and personal items from the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum to museums in Globe and Miami.

The Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum closed a few weeks ago to prepare for its conversion to the Arizona Experience museum for the 2012 centennial.

The Mofford Collection filled one large room in the Mining Museum and included her collection of kachinas, memorabilia, gifts, awards and many other items.

Mofford says details still need to be finalized and new display areas constructed, but she plans to transfer the majority of her collection to the Gila County Historical Museum in Globe and the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum in Miami. The Arizona Historical Society has offered to donate display cases to the two local museums.

  1. The Arizona Experience museum can never be open for Arizona's centennial, if ever, and the reason for the sudden and urgent need to move Governor Mofford's collection is unknown. Less than one fifth of the needed $15.7 million has been raised.
