New Law to Protect Stranded Drivers

A new state law goes into effect tomorrow (Wednesday) that requires drivers to give stranded motorists more safety room. If you see a vehicle on the side of the road with flashing lights or warning lights, you are required to slow down or to move over a lane if it is safe to do so.

This is a secondary violation, which means you will only be cited if you are stopped for something else, like speeding.

Until now Arizona law only protected first responders helping motorists on the side of the road. Fines for violating the new law vary according to the city in which the violation occurs.
