Most Elderly Arizonans Rely on Social Security

An AARP report says that most Arizona seniors rely heavily on Social Security for their income. The study found that Social Security makes up at least half the family income for 47% of those over 65 and 90% of income for nearly 20%.

AARP Arizona director David Mitchell says this generation of retirees is very dependent on Social Security because many are from an era in which the wife relied on the husband’s income. And many companies that once offered pensions have either canceled them or gome bankrupt.
