Gila County Community College Governing Board will have three public meetings tomorrow (Wednesday) starting at 2:pm. The meetings will be held by ITV at both the Payson Campus and in Gila Pueblo Campus Room 522.
At 2:pm a Truth in Taxation Hearing and a Public Budget Hearing will be held and the proposed 2011-2012 budget will be presented. Immediately following that meeting a Special Meeting will be called to order to adopt the budget. Then a third meeting will be held to conduct normal Governing Board business.

Senior Center Site Council Meets Wednesday
The Globe Senior Center Site Council meets tomorrow (Wednesday) at 12:45pm. They will discuss the recommendation for the new Senior Center name and will review the 1st Annual Golf Tournament.

Two public meetings tomorrow (Wednesday) will give the public the chance to participate in the Redistricting of the Gila County Supervisorial and Community College districts.
The first meeting is at 1:30pm in the Tribal Council Chamber in San Carlos. The second is in the Supervisors’ Hearing Room at the Gila County Courthouse at 6:00.
You can submit ideas and comments at any time but the public meetings will provide additional information about the redistricting process, information about a new mapping tool, and instructions for submitting plans or ideas online.
Other meetings will be held in Tonto Basin on June 14, and in Payson and Star Valley on June 16.

Initiatives Would Require Voter Approval for New Prisons
A Globe citizens group has launched two initiatives for the March 2012 ballot. The first initiative requires voter approval for any new prison constructed within Globe’s City Limits. The other initiative requires voter approval for any municipal resource to be spent or used for any new prison construction project.
The Citizens of Globe group says they have launched the two ballot initiatives because local elected officials have refused to pass a Resolution that would prohibit a 1,000 to 2,000 bed proposed private prison from being constructed in the Globe community.
More than 2,500 area residents have signed a Declaration of Opposition to such a prison.

Miami Town Council holds a Special Meeting tonight (Monday) at 6:30. They’ll consider a License Agreement with Freeport McMoRan authorizing Miami to operate the wastewater treatment plant and to conduct testing to verify that the plant will produce A+ quality effluent.

Last night Gila County Sheriff’s deputies and DPS stopped a vehicle pulling a trailer on Highway 70 at milepost 252. The K-9 unit found 229 pounds of marijuana in the trailer. 64 year old James Morett of North Carolina was arrested for possession and transportation of marijuana for sale.
On Friday Drug Task Force Agents arrested 48 year old Richard Taylor for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and tampering with physical evidence.
49 year old Larry Rhodes was arrested on failure to comply warants for drug paraphernalia violations.
44 year old Jeffrey Spivey was arreeted on a Pinal County warrant for probation violation on a charge of theft of means of transportation.
20 year old Andres Perez was arrested on a Graham County warrant for possesion of dangerous drugs.

Globe Summer Softball Leagues
The City of Globe announces the start of Summer Co-ed Adult Softball League and Men’s League. Co-ed games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Trujillo Softball Field at the Globe Community Center. Men’s games will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays.
All games will be double headers. The Leagues will run for seven weeks beginning June 28. A double elimination tournament will be held at the end of the season to determine a league champion. Teams will play a minimum of 16 games.
The fee for the leagues is $300 a team. Liability waivers and registration forms may be picked up at Globe City Hall and must be returned by Thursday, June 23.

Sidewalk Enhancement Project on US 60 Begins Monday
The Arizona Department of Transportation begins a pedestrian enhancement project on US 60 on Monday. The work includes about a half mile of sidewalk, signage, crosswalks, landscaping and other intersection improvements.
The safety improvements will be made on the north side of US 60 between Oak Street and Hill Street. They will provide a safe walkway for pedestrians through this heavily traveled business district. The $280,000 project is expected to be completed by this fall.
Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 5:am to 7:pm. One westbound lane will be closed for the duration of the project. Entrances to Oak and Hill Streets from the north side of US 60 will also be closed for the duration of the project. Signage will direct motorists through the work zone.
Motorists traveling in either direction who wish to access Hill Street on the north side of US 60 can use High Street, just east of Hill Street. Those who wish to access Oak Street from US 60 can use Cedar Street.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office has released information about the investigation into the April 28 death and vehicle fire on Forest Service Road 177 at Gold Creek.
A search warrant was obtained for the victim’s apartment in Tempe. Detectives found a note dated the day before the fire telling how and why the victim was going to end his own life. He was distraught over not being able to sell a computer program he had designed and worked on for a long time.
In the note he said he initially planned to burn his apartment but decided against that for the safety of the other apartment residents and firemen. He then planned to go north on Highway 87 and set fire to his vehicle from the inside.
Detectives found the remains of a flare pistol and evidence of a burnt flare in the debris of the burned vehicle.

Deena Yvonne Horta-Adams passed away Wednesday at her home in Central Heights. She was 41. She is survived by her husband David Adams; her children Delana and Dominique Gilmore and David and Danielle Adams; and her parents Juan and Erlynda Horta.

Globe Rotary, the City of Globe and the Gila County Division of Health and Emergency Services are holding the 11th Annual Sunrise Challenge at Round Mountain Park on Saturday morning.
The 5K race begins at 6:am. You can register until 5:45. You may also choose to walk the course or take the alternative 1.7 mile hike. Entry fee is $30.
After the race, visitors are invited to a sneak peek of the Old Dominion Historic Mine Park from 9:am until Noon. This sneak peek will make up for the April 9 event that was cancelled because of the weather.

Final First Friday Program of the Season

Drug Awareness Walk on Saturday
Copper Basin Coalition presents a Drug Awareness Walk on Saturday at 8:am. A Dump the Drugs event will be at Fry’s from 8:am until Noon. The purpose of the Walk is to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse.

Miami Library Summer Reading Program Kicks Off Saturday
The Miami Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program kicks off this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 with a free program featuring juggler James Reid.

New Study Says AZ Budget Easy to Balance
A new study says there is an easy alternative to cutting education and human services in order to balance the state budget. A report by the think tank United for a Fair Economy suggests flipping state tax structures so that the wealthiest pay the rates that low income wage earners are now paying, and vice versa. That would immediately wipe out Arizona’s budget shortfall.
Report co-author Karen Kraut told Public News Service that it’s a misperception that the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes at the state and local level. She says just about every tax except the federal income tax hits the lower and middle class harder than the wealthy.
Kraut says the top 20% of Arizona taxpayers pay 5.5% of their income in state and local taxes while the lowest income taxpayers pay 12.5% of their income. Reversing that would raise $14 billion dollars for the state.

APS Seeks 6.6% Rate Hike
Arizona Public Service Company is asking state regulators for a 6.6% rate increase. This would add about $8 to the average monthly bill if approved.
The company says it needs the extra money to help pay for system improvements and make it possible to use more smart technology.
The head of the Residential Utility Consumer Office says they will look into APS finances to see if the rate hike is warranted.
The Arizona Republic reports that state regulators will probably spend a year reviewing the rate increase request.
