Big Increase in Arizona Seismic Activity in 2011

The Arizona Geology blog reports that there were 131 earthquakes in Arizona during 2011. The largest events of the year were 3.7 and 3.6 magnitude earthquakes near Clarkdale in central Arizona.

There were 53 earthquakes recorded in 2010. Overall, seismic activity in 2011 represents a 160% increase from 2010 and a 100% increase from 2009.

About 36% of the quakes in 2011 were associated with swarms of small events that occurred over the space of a few days.
