A new study by Carnegie Mellon University found that
children are 51 times more likely to be the victims of identity theft than
adults.
US News reports that out of 42,000 children whose financial
histories were scanned, 10.2% showed fraudulent Social Security number use.
Children’s Social Security numbers are valuable because a Social
Security number with a blank history can have any name connected to it.
However, the credit bureau Transunion has teamed up with
identity theft protection company AllClear ID to create a free online tool where
you can check the status of your child’s identity. If fraud is detected, they
can fix it for you. The website is www.allclearid.com/child.
