Massive Power Outage on San Carlos Reservation

The San Carlos Apache Tribe experienced a massive power outage on Thursday.

About 70% of the residents on the San Carlos Apache Reservation lost power around 7:30am Thursday morning. The outage was caused by a major power transmission line failure.

A state of emergency was declared on the reservation after severe winds destroyed 1,800 feet of electrical line between Coolidge Dam and Winkelman  The stoppage of eight wells reduced the water supply.

Power couldn’t be restored Friday because of strong winds in San Carlos that grounded helicopter support.

The Red Cross set up a shelter on Friday night at Burdette Hall where a generator provided power to the gymnasium. They provided cots, blankets, food and water.

Power was finally restored by the San Carlos Irrigation Project on Saturday.
