Globe Library Receives Grant for Media Box

The Globe Public Library announces that they have been awarded a grant from the Arizona State Library for a Media Box. This will hold the entire DVD library.

With this box, you will be able to reserve the DVD’s from a computer and then use your library card to check them out.

The Media Box is just like a Redbox, but there is no cost. You just use your library card.

This year the Arizona State Library will receive more than $3 million under the Library Services and Technology Act which is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Police Log

A fire burned a mobile home in Peridot yesterday near Geronimo Drive and Moonbase Road. The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter says it will be there this afternoon to evaluate the needs of the two adults who were displaced.

Nobody was hurt in a single vehicle accident yesterday morning at Cobre Valley Plaza.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a report of a single vehicle accident early yesterday morning near Petticoat Junction off of Russell Road. No one was in the vehicle when the deputy arrived. About a half hour later a man tried to report the vehicle as stolen. 22 year old Jose Ramirez was arrested for false statements and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people after a domestic incident on Braley. 23 year old Morgan Powell and 25 year old Lisa Pitts were charged with disorderly conduct.

A deputy took a report of threats at the Gila County Detention Center.

Globe Police arrested 35 year old Gabriel Cabrera on two outstanding warrants for DUI.

Officers are investigating an assault report taken at a business on Highway 60; criminal damage at a business on East Ash Street; criminal trespass at a residence on Highland Drive; and shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

The Department of Public Safety in Tucson arrested 24 year old Joshua Becker of Globe on a child support warrant.


Obituaries

Lucy Marcanti of Globe passed away Monday at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. She was 88. She is survived by 5 children.
Visitation for “Sena” Marcanti is Friday at 9:am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Rosary is at 10:00 and Mass is at 10:30.

Kimberly Kay Johnson passed away July 27 at her home in Miami. She was 51. She  is survived by her sister; her brother Daniel of Globe; her sons Rickey Farley and Joseph Miller of Globe; 2 stepdaughters; and 13 grandchildren.
The funeral for Kim Johnson is Friday at 10:am at Miles Funeral Services Globe.
There will be a pot luck following the service at the Shamrock Bar in Claypool.

Lola Hinton Russell of Peridot passed away July 27 at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. She was 88. She is survived by 4 children; 3 brothers; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The wake for Lola Russell is Saturday at 4:pm at Josephine Haynes residence. The funeral is Sunday at 2:pm at San Carlos Miracle church.

Charles Bejarano School Collecting Old Cell Phones and Ink Cartridges

Charles A. Bejarano Elementary School is collecting old cell phones and empty ink cartridges to be recycled. This will help provide needed classroom supplies.

This is an on going effort that also  includes small electrical devices like Ipods, cameras, mp3 players and laptops.

You can bring the items to Charles Bejarano School or to recycle bins located at both the Claypool and Miami Post Offices.


Forest Road 250 at Apache Lake Closed

Tonto National Forest officials announce that  Forest Road 250 is closed until further notice. Forest Road 250 is the road that accesses the Davis Wash Recreation Area at Apache Lake.

Heavy rains over the weekend washed out a section of the roadway above a steep embankment. It may be several months before repairs are completed.

Miami School District Override Election

The Miami Unified School District will have a Special Election for a Budget Override Increase on Tuesday, November 5. The Election will be a vote by mail ballot only.

The purpose of the election is to request voter approval to continue authorization for the District to exceed its statutory budget limit by 10%.

Ballots will be mailed on October 10.

Gila County School Superintendent Linda O’Dell is preparing an informational pamphlet that will be mailed to each household in the district with one or more registered electors.

Anyone who wishes to submit a “Pro” or “Con” statement may do so by mail or hand delivery to the Gila County School Superintendent’s Office no later than 5:pm Friday, August 9. The statement must be signed and include the name of the District, the author’s name, address and telephone number, and permission for the name to be printed in the informational pamphlet. 

The last day to register and be eligible to vote in this election is Monday, October 7.

Police Log

Last night Globe Police arrested 39 year old Olivia Bunch for DUI at a residence on Linda Vista Drive. A report was also taken for domestic violence/assault.

24 year old Joshua Anderson was arrested on a failure to to pay warrant for underage consumption.

Officers are investigating criminal damage at a business on North Broad Street and a theft at a residence on Fegan Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft at Sun Rise Mobile Home Park.


Supervisors Work Session Today

The Gila County Board of Supervisors has a Work Session this morning (Tuesday) at 10:00.

The agenda includes the 2012 Financial Audit summary and information about the final phase of the Arizona Public Services Company’s Energy Audit Report.

GAAC Presentation About Medicare Fraud

Globe Active Adult Center will have a presentation about Medicare fraud on Tuesday at 11:am.

Cathy Melvin from Congresswoman Kirkpatrick’s office will be at the Globe Active Adult Center on Thursday at 9:30am to help you with federal matters such as Social Security benefits, Medicare, housing and federal taxes.


Gila County Fair Committee Meetings

The Gila County Fair Committee will meet every Tuesday starting tomorrow  (July 30) and continuing until September 11.

They meet at 6:pm at the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce.


Obituary

Paul Stephen McKusick passed away July 22 on his 86th birthday. He is survived by his wife Marjorie; his sisters Jean Seder and Myfanwy Ioli; his brother Robert McKusick; and his children Brian McKusick, Eve Wickizer and Ilona ter Horst; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Paul McKusick will be held Saturday, August 10 at 11:am at First Presbyterian Church.
The family suggests that  memorial donations may be made to the U.S.O., St. Jude’s Chilren’s Research Hospital, First Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice.


GCC Partners with Grand Canyon University

Gila Community College has announced that it has formed a partnership with Grand Canyon University. The increasing options available at Grand Canyon University in Healthcare, Business, Teaching and the Arts ties in well with options at Gila Community College.

Grand Canyon University will accept Gila Community College credits and will offer reduced tuition to GCC students and staff.

PMFHE Scholarship Dinner and Auction

Pinal Mountain Foundation for Higher Education will hold its annual scholarship dinner and benefit auction on Thursday, September 5 at the Dream Manor Inn. The cost is $25 a person.

Tickets are available by calling 200-6963. 

All proceeds will be used for scholarships for students attending Gila Community College at the Gila Pueblo or San Carlos Campuses.


Police Log

There was an accidental shooting Saturday around noon at a residence on First Avenue. The patient was flown to a Phoenix hospital.

A man suffered a head injury late Friday night after falling into a ditch. He was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center reported an assault Friday night that occurred on West Ash.

A two vehicle collision occurred Friday around noon in the area of West Ash Street.

Miami Police arrested 50 year old Larry Arronte for sexual abuse.

23 year old Eloy Olivaz was arrested on a warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Yesterday morning Globe Police arrested 23 year old Gregory Phillips for shoplifting at a business on South Hill Street.

54 year old Gene Newby of Maricopa was arrested Saturday night at a residence on East Sycamore for aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, prohibited possessor and child abuse.

On Friday 22 year old Soane Folau was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for criminal nuisance.

35 year old David Martinez was arrested  on a child support warrant.

Officers are investigating a delayed assault report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center; a burglary on South Fourth Street; a theft at a business on East Ash; a theft at a business on North Street; criminal damage at a residence on North Willow Street; criminal damage at a business on South Broad Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a domestic disturbance at a residence on Roberts Drive; a report of an assault taken at a residence on First Avenue;  and criminal damage at a residence on Pinal Canyon.
