Alzheimer's Support Group Meeting

The Alzheimer’s Education and Support Group meets Wednesday at 1:pm at the Globe Active Adult Center.

If you or someone you know has Alzheimer’s or other memory problems, this is a good place to learn caregiving tips.

Globe Library Looking for Craft Items for Summer Reading Program

The Globe Public Library needs craft items for the Summer Reading Program.

They are looking for 2 liter plastic soda bottles, milk jugs, straws, plastic teaspoons, potting soil, paper brads, sand, ground coffee, paper bowls, sponges, styrofoam balls, wrapping paper, pieces of scrapbook paper, and toilet paper rolls.

If you’d like to help, bring these items to the Globe Public Library during business hours.

Globe Library Mother's Day Tea Party

The Globe Public Library is celebrating Mother’s Day this Saturday (May 11) with a Tea Party from Noon until 2:pm.

Police Log

Globe Police arrested 43 year old Kyle Cook for criminal trespassing at a business on South Jess Hayes Road.

Officers are investigating a harassment report taken at a busienss on East Ash; criminal damage at a residence on North Devereaux Street; criminal damage on Jess Hayes Road; and a report of identity theft taken at a residence on Quartz Loop.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21 year old Cameron Orndortf for theft.

Deputies are investigating an assault at a residence on Snedden; and a hit and run in the Shamrock parking lot


Bruce Hoffman of San Carlos passed away May 1 at Promise Hospital in Mesa. He was 37. He is survived by his parents Harrison and Sylvia Hoffman; 4 children; and 2 sisters.
The wake for Bruce Hoffman is Friday at 4:pm at the Hoffman residence.
The funeral is Saturday at 2:pm at San Carlos Miracle Church.

Road Work Tuesday on Highway 60

Sullivan Paving will be repairing the asphalt on Highway 60  near the N. Broad Street and W. Ash Street intersection on Tuesday. That’s the intersection at the Car Wash and Circle K.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. The westbound lanes of Highway 60 will be closed from Hackney Avenue to Blake Street. North Broad Street will be closed at Haskins Road.  Silver Street will be closed at Highway 60.

The repairs will take place between 8:am and 4:pm.

Longtime Globe resident Earline Tidwell passed away Friday (May 3). She is survived by 3 children, 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Earline Tidwell will be held Saturday (May 11) at 11:am at First Presbyterian Church in Globe.

A Memorial Service for Lena Guttry will be held Saturday (May 11) at 10:30am at First Southern Baptist Church in Miami.

Tri City Fire Department put out a fire Saturday morning at a residence on Glendale Avenue.

On Friday local fire agencies put out a brush fire in the creek behind Libby’s El Rey.

Three juveniles were referred to the juvenile detention center in connection with a fire Friday afternoon on Broad Street.

A hit and run was reported Friday afternoon on Highway 60.

There was a single vehicle accident Friday afternoon in the area of East Copper Hills Road.

A one-vehicle accident was reported Friday night on Highway 60.

Globe Police arrested 51 year old Eric Laguna and 36 year old Roy Reyes yesterday for criminal trespass at a home on Escalera.

20 year old Thomas Dorame was charged with resisting arrest after a fight in the area of the Federal Express building.

44 year old Constance Taylor of Litchfield Park was arrested Saturday morning in the area of Fairgrounds Road for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and promoting prison contraband.

48 year old Edward Godoy was arrested Saturday night for DUI.

56 year old Daniel Singh was arrested on a child support warrant.

On Friday 23 year old Levon Patton was arrested for shoplifting at a business on Hill Street.

Officers are investigating a possible assault at a business on Jess Hayes Road; a hit and run in the area of Broad and Cedar Streets; a criminal damage report taken at a residence on North Escudilla Drive; criminal damage at a business on North Broad Street; a fraud report taken at a residence on Linda Vista; and a report of threats taken at a business on East Ash.

On Saturday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22 year old Brian Rodriguez for domestic violence/assault and criminal damage after a disturbance in Ice House Canyon.

21 year old Jon Jones was charged with possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of a drug and drug paraphernalia, and misconduct involving a weapon.

32 year old Karl Lopez was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and  a failure to comply warrant for disorderly conduct.

On Friday the Gila County Probation Office arrested  36 year old inmate Joseph Armendariz on a probation violation warrant for attempted production of marijuana. The Sheriff’s Office served Armendariz with a warrant for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Task Force  arrested  30 year old Andrew Whidden on warrants for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia; driving under the influence of drugs with a suspended license; and unlawful flight from law enforcement. Whidden also had a DPS warrant for driving with a suspended license and a Miami PD warrant for assault.

Deputies are investigating criminal damage to a vehicle on Main Street in Central Heights; criminal damage to a vehicle on Central Drive;and criminal damage to a vehicle on Cherry Street in Country Club Manor.

Mesa Police arrested 30 year old Courtney Gutierrrez of Miami on a failure to comply warrant for endangering the life and health of a minor.

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23 year old Renita Shorten of Bylas on a failure to comply warrant for issuing a bad check.

Globe Council Meets Tonight

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

There will be a Public Hearing about the Home Rule Option.

The agenda also includes an update on the services provided by Right Away Disposal.

The Council will consider adopting an Access to Care Fee  relating to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

An Executive Session will discuss pending litigation.

Miami Wastewater Advisory Board and Town Council Meet Tonight

The Town of Miami Wastewater Advisory Board meets today (Monday) at 5:00 at Miami Town Hall. That will be followed by a Special Meeting of the Miami Town Council starting at 5:30.

The Town Council will consider approving a $1 million contract with FNF Construction for the first phases of the Miami Wastewater Collection System Improvements Project.


Robert Emiliano Benavidez passed away April 26 at his home in Miami. He was 64. He is survived by his wife Maria; 3 daughters, including Joy Gonzales and Victoria Benavidez of Miami; 3 brothers including Chris Benavidez of Miami; his sister; and 3 grandchildren.
Visitation for Robert Benavidez is Wednesday at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Lifelong Globe resident Abigail Reynoso Hargrove passed away April 10. She is survived by her daughter Tiffany Perez; 3 grandchildren; 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
Rosary for Abigail Hargrove is Wednesday at 10:am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will follow at 10:30.

Massive Power Outage on San Carlos Reservation

The San Carlos Apache Tribe experienced a massive power outage on Thursday.

About 70% of the residents on the San Carlos Apache Reservation lost power around 7:30am Thursday morning. The outage was caused by a major power transmission line failure.

A state of emergency was declared on the reservation after severe winds destroyed 1,800 feet of electrical line between Coolidge Dam and Winkelman  The stoppage of eight wells reduced the water supply.

Power couldn’t be restored Friday because of strong winds in San Carlos that grounded helicopter support.

The Red Cross set up a shelter on Friday night at Burdette Hall where a generator provided power to the gymnasium. They provided cots, blankets, food and water.

Power was finally restored by the San Carlos Irrigation Project on Saturday.

Holy Angels Cinco de Mayo Fiesta This Saturday

Holy Angels Catholic Church invites the comunity to the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta this Saturday in downtown Globe. The celebration begins at 10:am in the Old Dominion parking lot and continues until 9:pm.

There will be a wide selection of crafts and lots of food booths, including Mexican food, frybread, hot dogs and hamburgers. There will also be cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones and nachos.

Activities also include live music and games for the kids.

'An Evening With Governor Hunt' this Friday at Bullion Plaza

The next First Friday program on May 3 will present Don Shields portraying the first governor of Arizona.

Shields uses the voice and mannerisms of the speakers of the time to bring Governor Hunt to life. Hunt family members say he is a striking likeness. His stories of the struggle for Arizona statehood are based on extensive research and interviews with members of the Hunt family.

During the Arizona Centennial celebration, Shields led the re-enactment of Governor Hunt’s  walk to the Capitol on the first day of statehood and his first speech as Governor.

This program is free and will be presented at 6:30pm on Friday, May 3 at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

Globe Lions White Cane Drive

The Globe Lions Club will be at the Claypool Safeway on Friday and Saturday (May 3 and 4) to collect for the White Cane drive.

The money raised will help pay for eye exams and eyeglasses for people who cannot afford them.

Globe Public Library is having a free Cinco de Mayo family craft hour on Friday at 2:pm.

There will be a Planning Meeting for Summer Reading Program volunteers Friday at 3:pm at the Globe Public Library.

Police Log

Local fire agencies put out a brush fire  yesterday afternoon on Ragus Road behind Walmart. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Globe Police responded to a fight late yesterday afternoon at a business on East Ash Street. 33 year old Joshua Ensworth was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. After he was released from the hospital, Ensworth was charged with aggravated assault and taken to the Gila County Jail.

Officers are investigating thefts reported at a business on Highway 60 and at a business on North Broad Street.

The Gila County Narcotics Task Force arrested 28 year old Siboney Astor for driving with a suspended license, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

29 year old Victor Long was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

A deputy took a report of illegal dumping in the area of Tremont Street.

Copper Theft Ring Arrested for Stealing Raw Copper from ASARCO

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has announced that a multi-million dollar copper theft ring has been broken up.

The Department of Public Safety began investigating the ring after a traffic stop of a semi-truck in September. The truck was carrying nearly $180,000 worth of raw copper stolen from the ASARCO mine in Hayden.

During the criminal investigation, DPS determined that several ASARCO employees helped steal the raw copper. Others drove the raw copper loads to heavy metal recyclers in both Arizona and California. The heavy metal recyclers would purchase the stolen copper from them at a fraction of the commodity price and then resell it to Chinese importers at a profit.

The defendants face 10 criminal counts including conspiracy, money laundering and theft involving nearly $10 million in stolen raw copper from ASARCO.

Globe High School Talent Show

Globe High School will host a talent show on Thursday at 6:pm in the Globe High School Auditorium.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Planning Meeting for Summer Reading Volunteers

There will be a Planning Meeting for Summer Reading Program volunteers on Friday at 3:pm at the Globe Public Library.

The Summer Reading Program will be held for six weeks in June and July on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Ideas are needed for stories, songs, games and crafts.

Globe School Board Public Hearing Today at 5:30

The Globe School Board will hold a Public Hearing today (Wednesday) at 5:30 on the 2012-2013 Revised Budget.

The Regular Meeting follows at 6:00. The agenda includes the adoption of the Revised Budget.

There was a two vehicle accident yesterday morning on East Ash Street. A report was taken and the case is pending further investigation.

Last night after a follow up investigation Globe Police cited and released Tito Tarango for assault.

44 year old Ernest Preston was arrested for shoplifting at a business on East Ash Street.

47 year old Orien Newman was arrested for criminal trespass yesterday morning at a business on Jesse Hayes Road.

A fraud report was taken at a residence on Hackney.


Shirley V. Jones passed away April 25. She was 83. She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Wilson and Claudia DalMolin; 3 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Memorial Services for Shirley Jones will be private.
