Globe Council Meets Monday


Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:00.

Special presentations will recognize Gila County Officer of the Quarter Steve Shaw and the retirement of Steve Wolf from the Globe Fire Department.

The agenda includes discussion of the 2012-2013 Tentative Budget and the Bingo License for the Globe Active Adult Center.

257 Fire 75% Contained


The 257 Fire, 3 miles south of Superior is now 75% contained. It has burned 2,860 acres.

Poco Fire Burning Northeast of Young


A wildfire was reported about 2:30 yesterday (Thursday) afternoon 6 miles northeast of Young.

The Poco fire has burned 1,000 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police Log


A fire at the Food Bank on Hackney Avenue was put out around 7:30 last night.

There was a two vehicle injury accident yesterday morning at the intersection of Hill Street and Ash. A driver was cited for driving with a suspended license and failure to stop at a red light.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning at 5th and Maple.

No injuries were reported in a single vehicle accident yestrday evening on Highway 60.

High Desert Humane Society Open House


The High Desert Humane Society is having an Open House on Friday from 4 to 6:pm.

The Society has just opened their new headquarters and Cat Adoption Center.

The Open House includes food, drinks, door prizes, a raffle and lots of cats and kittens.

The High Desert Humane Society is located at 669 N. Broad Street in downtown Globe.

Globe Active Adult Center Concert in the Park


The Globe Active Adult Center’s Concert in the Park on Friday from 5 to 7:pm features the music of Elvis and the Girls. There will also be a Gold ‘n’ Oldies Car Show. 

Hamburgers with chips and a soda will be served for $4. A small steak with chili beans and corn on the cob costs $6, and steak and shrimp with beans and corn costs $7.

Globe Active Adult Center Will Show Elder Abuse Documentary


Friday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Globe Active Adult Center will show a short documentary about elder abuse starting at 11:30am.

Globe Police arrested 21 year old Benny Gudino late last night in connection with a criminal damage report taken on June 9.

A 52 year old Montana man was arrested for shoplifting at the Seventh Street Circle K.

Officers are investigating a domestic disturbance at Yuma and Broad Street; a burglary at a business on Euclid Avenue; a stolen vehicle report taken at a business on Highway 60; criminal damage at a residence on North Main Street; and a telephone harassment report taken at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19 year old Aaron Russell on a disorderly conduct warrant.

Deputies are investigating an animal cruelty report taken at a residence on Puerto Rico and Calle De Loma; a criminal damage report at a residence on Central Drive; and a runaway juvenile report taken at a residence on Hazen.

Obituary


Former Miami resident Hazel Jacobs passed away June 8 in Snowflake. She was 87. She is survived by her children Lora Allen and Lee Jacobs.
A graveside service for Hazel Jacobs will be held Saturday at 11:30am at Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 20 year old Wilson Lesley for aggravated assault in connection with an investigation that occurred on Monday

Officers are investigating criminal damage at a residence on La Mesa Terrace.

A Gila County Sheriff’s deputy took a report of criminal damage to a fence on Forest Service Road 112C between Kellner and Ice House Canyon.

Obituary


Gerald Talgo of Peridot passed away June 9 at University Medical Center in Tucson. He was 49. He is survived by his children Chrystal, Richard and Jolene Talgo; his brother Wallace; his sister Alicia Cadmus; and one grandchild.
The funeral for “Tweedy” Talgo is Saturday at 1:pm at the Ernest Stanley Memorial  Activity Center in Bylas.

257 Fire 40 Percent Contained, Temporary Road Closure


The 257 Fire, 3 miles south of Superior has burned 2,640 acres. It is now 40% contained.

Firefighters continue to strengthen containment lines to protect a power line east of the fire. Resolution Copper’s exploratory drilling has been suspended. High daytime temperatures remain a concern for firefighter safety and a potential for heat related illnesses exists.

Many emergency vehicles and others associated with fire suppression efforts are moving along US Highway 60 between Superior and Top of the World. The public is asked to be alert to this added traffic and use extra caution when driving through that area.

Smoke from the 257 Fire is a concern in surrounding communities. For smoke ionformation and  air quality forecasts visit the Department of Environmental Quality website at www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/smoke/.

Tonto National Forest officials have announced a temporary road closure due to the 257 fire. The closure area includes the Oak Flat Campground. It begins at the intersection of SR 60/177 junction, northeast along the southern edge of SR 60 to Devil's Canyon, south following Devil's Canyon to the forest boundary, following the forest boundary south and southwest to SR 177, then northerly along the eastern edge of SR 177, north to Highway 60.

Local Ranching History at Miami Hardscrabble Series


The Miami Hardscrabble Series  presents Jane Hale Wednesday evening, talking about local ranching history.

The program begins at 6:30pm at the Miami Memorial Library.

Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

Alzheimer's Information at Globe Active Adult Center


The Alzheimer’s Education and Information Group will be at the Globe Active Adult Center Wednesday at 1:pm. 

If you are caring for someone who has dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, this is a chance to gather educational material and caregiving tips.

Southern Gila County Network Team Meeting


The Southern Gila County Network Team meets Wednesday at 9:30am at St. Paul’s Methodist Church. 

Amy Dill from the Parent Information Network and Chris Magana from Community Bridges will speak at the meeting.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday


The Globe School Board meets tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

The meeting includes a discussion and recommendation relating to the vacated Governing Board seat.

Veterans Day Prize Still Unclaimed


Last November the Town of Miami had a Veterans Day drawing. One of the prizes is still unclaimed.

Eugeno Lara Rodriguez won first place for the age division 7 to 12 years old.

'257' Fire Burning South of Superior


The 257 Fire, 3 miles south of Superior, has burned 2,400 acres. The cause of the fire is under invstigation.

Call for Artists


The Cobre Valley Center for the Arts has a Call to Artists for its July Gallery Show. The theme is “Theater, Imagination and the Pied Piper.” This is open to all ages and all media. All pieces must be submitted by June 28.

The show is sponsored by the Summer Youth Musical Theater.


Fiesta Sub Committee Meets Today


The Town of Miami Fiesta Sub Committee meets today (Tuesday) at 6:pm in the Miami Town Council Chambers.

The Committee will talk about entertainment for the Fiesta event, advertising the event, donation requests and vendor applications.

Police Log


Globe Police arrested two people after a robbery early yesterday morning at the east Globe Subway. No weapon was involved. 35 year old Nicholas Bowser was arrested for the robbery. 25 year old Tianna Bowser was also arrested for conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of dangerous drugs.

50 year old Gerald Torrez was arrested for criminal trespass in the area of Connie’s store.

Officers are investigating a burglary at a residence on Yucca and shoplifting at Walmart.

Miami Police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Gibson Street. The car had been stolen from Superior on June 7. Superior Police were contacted and the car was towed to a storage yard.

Obituary


Yolanda Cruz passed away June 6 at her home in Central Heights. She was 63. She is survived by her husband Paul; 4 children; her sister; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for “Yoli” Cruz will be held Saturday at 11:am at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Globe. A luncheon will follow at 1:00 at the Fraternal Order of Police in Claypool.

Fires in Tonto National Forest


A fire in the Tonto National Forest between Florence Junction and Superior, north of Highway 60, has burned 200 acres. The Comet Fire is 50% contained.

Another fire near the junction of Highway 177 and Forest Service Road 257 has burned about 3 acres. That fire is called the 257 Fire.

Miami Council Meets Tonight


The Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30. The Oath of Office will be given to new and reelected Council members Mike Black, Sammy Gonzales and Don Reiman.

The new Council will then select a Mayor and Vice-Mayor.

The Council will discuss and possibly approve the tentative budget for fiscal year 2012-2013.

Police Log


Globe Police arrested 50 year old Michael Pena yesterday morning for shoplifting at the Claypool Safeway.

49 year old Lyle Pahe and 48 year old Patrick Pahe were arrested for shoplifting at the Hill Street Safeway.

Two people were arrested for trespassing at a business on South Jesse Hayes Road. 43 year old Elvis Kinney and 53 year old Alonzo Yazzie were booked into the Gila County Jail.

Two people were arrested after a hit and run accident Saturday night at Ash and Sixth Street. 27 year old Geraldine McIntosh was charged with aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accdent. 23 year old Lee Steele was charged with false reporting to law enforcement.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident Friday night on North Broad Street. 43 year old Timothy Smith was arrested for aggravated DUI.

45 year old Paulinus Mull was arrested Friday afternoon for assault.

Globe Police are investigating criminal damage to a vehicle at Horne Motor Company; criminal damage at a residence on Hackney Hill; and a burglary at a residence on Euclid Hill.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an assault and theft that occurred at a residence in Wheatfields and  a domestic incident on Boston Street.

Apache Junction Police arrested 19 year old Fernando Morales of Globe on a failure to appear warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Obituary


Mary Lou Scott of Globe passed away June 5 at Maravilla Care Center in Phoenix. She was 83. She is survived by her brother Bill.
A graveside service for Mary Scott will be held Friday at 10:am at Pinal Cemetery in Central Heights
