Spring Gardening Workshop in San Carlos


The University of Arizona-San Carlos Cooperative Extension and the San Carlos Diabetes Prevention Program is sponsoring a free Spring Gardening Workshop.

It’s on Saturday, February 9 from 8:30am until 4:30pm at the San Carlos Boys and Girls Club.

Gila County Spelling Bee February 8


The Gila County Spelling Bee will be held next Friday (February 8) at 1:pm in the Payson High School  auditorium. February 15 has been designated a back up date in case of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

The Gila County Spelling Bee is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Fresh Produce at Holy Angels Parish Hall


Fresh produce will be available at the Holy Angels Parish Hall parking lot tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 9:am.

The community is invited to watch the Super Bowl for free at the Knights of Columbus Hall .

Some free snacks will be available, or you can bring your own. They will also have beverages and food for sale.

Kirkpatrick in Globe-Miami Today


Representative Ann Kirkpatrick will be in Globe, Miami and San Carlos today (Friday). Her schedule includes meetings with seniors, veterans, law enforcement leaders, educators, and local elected officials.

Kirkpatrick will be at the Miami Senior Center today from 11:45 to 12:15. She will be at the VA Clinic from 12:30 until 1:pm.

Yesterday around noon Globe Police were dispatched to a fight at the Globe Education Center. A juvenile was referred to juvenile authorities for disrupting an educational facility.  18 year old Yvette Sanchez  was taken into custody and transported to the Gila county Jail.

35 year old Gabriel Cabrera was arrested last night for driving with a suspended license.

Globe Police arrested 31 year old Maria Robles on a failure to appear warrant for issuing a bad check.

36 year old Amanda Wallace was arrested  on a child support warrant.

19 year old Evan Volante was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for shoplifting.

43 year old Holly Pitman was arrested on a contempt of court warrant for possession and use of drug paraphernalia.

A criminal damage report was taken at a business on Highway 60.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Jesse Flores for second degree burglary.

A criminal damage report was taken at a residence on Weaver Circle.

First Friday Lecture About 'Hiking Historic Trails'


Bob Zache will talk about “Hiking Historic Trails” at the First Friday lecture series tomorrow (February 1) at the Bullion Plaza. The presentation begins at 6:30.

Zache is the instructor for a hiking class at Gila Pueblo College. He has hiked into and out of the Grand Canyon many times, as well as other areas around the state.

The First Friday programs are free. Light refreshments will be available after the program.

Last night Globe Police arrested two people after a domestic violence situation at a business on Highway 60. 29 year old Patricia Woodard and 34 year old Mallisa Monsees were charged with domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

28 year old Selina Robertson was arrested for an outstanding warrant and for possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.

23 year old Robert Salcido was arrested on a child support warrant and  a probation violation warrant for aggravated assault.

Officers are investigating a burglary at a business on Main Street; a burglary at a business on South Broad Street; and a theft at a residence on Haskins.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage at a residence on Kinnemur.

Ray Hogan passed away January 26. He is survived by his wife Scarlette; 5 brothers; 3 sisters; 3 children and 16 grandchildren.
Services for Ray Hogan will be private.

Everett Todd, Jr. has passed away at the age of 97.
A Memorial Service for Everett Todd, Jr. will be held Saturday at 1:pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Globe.

Jesus Macias  passed away at his home in Miami. He was 86.
Visitation for “Chuy” Macias is Saturday at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

Doris E. Bacon passed away January 28 at her home in Globe. She was 85. She is survived by her husband Edward; her sons Earl and David Bacon and 2 sisters.
A Memorial Service for Doris Bacon will be held next Friday, February 8 at 10:am at Lamont Mortuary.

Former Globe resident Ricardo Lucero passed away January 20. He was 82. He is survived by 4 brothers and sisters; 3 children; his stepdaughter; and 7 grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Ricardo Lucero will be held on Saturday, February 9 at 2:pm at Whitney and Murphy Funeral Home in Phoenix.
Memorial donations may be made to the Andrea Miller Family Fund set up by the Pinetop Country Club.

Limited Supply of Free Flu Shots


The Gila County Health Division says it has a limited supply of free pediatric and adult flu shots available at their office on Apache Avenue.

The shots will be administered on a first come first served basis.

The vaccination supply was provided courtesy of  Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

O'Dell Applies for Pine Position


The Payson Roundup reports that Gila County School Superintendent Linda O’Dell has applied for the position of Pine-Strawberry School Superintendent.

O’Dell decided to apply for the position because the current Pine Superintendent is retiring at the end of the year. She and her husband moved to Pine in 2000 and she says they  love it there.

GCC Online Survey About Possible New Programs


Gila Community College wants to know the level of interest for some potential new programs. They would like you to participate in an online survey that is available by a link at www.gilaccc.org or a link on their Facebook page.

The programs being considered  include Physical Therapy Assistant, Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Records and Health Information, Welding Technology, Electronics and Instrumentation, Machining Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technologies, and Renewable Energy.

Students who are interested in any of these programs are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey must be completed by February 1.

Nobody was hurt in a single vehicle accident yesterday afternoon in the area of Maple and Ninth Streets.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 52 year old Anthony Garcia on a charge of theft.

Deputies are investigating a report of a sexual incident that occurred in the area of El Camino; a burglary on Copper Street; a burglary on Cherry Avenue; and a report of illegally dumped trash.

Globe Police arrested 35 year old Raynell Pizano on a child support warrant.

Officers are investigating a burglary at Copper Country Mobile Home Park.

GCSO Looking for Two Men Possibly Connected to Shooting


The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident on Calle De Loma that occurred on Friday, January 25.

Apache Bow Hunters 'Stump Shoot'


The Apache Bow Hunters will have their “Stump Shoot” on Sunday, February 10

Registration starts at 7:am and score cards must be in by 2:pm.

Fees are $25 for adults and $20 for youth, with other special fees available.

Public Meeting to Discuss Tonto Forest Recreation


Tonto National Forest recreation officials are having a public meeting on Wednesday night from 6 to 8:pm at Besh Ba Gowah. The purpose of this series of meetings around the state is to get public input about the future of developed recreation sites.

Meetings will also be held on Wednesday, February 6 from 6 to 8:pm at Tonto Basin Elementary School, and on Friday, February 8 from 1 to 3:pm at Roosevelt Lake Resort..

Miami School Superintendent Resigns


The Miami Unified School District announced on Monday that Superintendent Don Nelson has resigned. 

Nelson was Miami’s Superintendent for ten and a half years.

The Miami School Board has appointed Sherry Dorathy to be Acting Superintendent.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on Highway 60. The case is pending further investigation.

Globe Police arrested 42 year old Lillian Martin on East Sycamore for domestic violence/assault.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people after a disturbance on Upper Glendale. 48 year old John Farris and 44 year old Tammy Mitchell were charged with domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

42 year old Jamie Sanford was arrested yesterday for aggravated assault.

Longtime Globe resident and business owner Doris Bacon passed away Monday afternoon.
Memorial Services for Doris Bacon are pending with Lamont Mortuary.

Aurelie Jeanne Marie Flores of Globe passed away January 26. She is survived by her husband Joe; 5 brothers and sisters; 9 children; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Visitation for “Lillie” Flores is Saturday at 8:30am at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.
There will be a celebration of Lillie’s life at the Globe Elks Lodge following burial at Globe Cemetery.

Supervisors Meet Tuesday


The Gila County Board of Supervisors will have a Work Session on Tuesday at 10:am.

They will discuss a proposal to  design, construct and manage an automobile race track at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

The Supervisors will also discuss a draft Curfew Ordinance.

Police Log


The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred early Friday morning on Calle De Loma. The victim was flown to a Valley hospital in serious condition.

Deputies responded to a  call about a dead body at a residence on Deer Farm Road. The death was determined to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Miami Police and Public Works were busy over the weekend with a sewer back up that caused problems for at least three residences. Pumping will continue through this morning.

Miami and Globe Fire Departments were able to control a fire on Sullivan Street, but the house was a total loss.

The driver in a one vehicle accident early Friday morning  in the area of Six Shooter Canyon  refused medical attention. A report was taken.

There was a single vehicle accident Saturday morning on Hospital Drive.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident Friday night on Highway 60.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office assisted Globe PD   early yesterday morning and arrested two people after a disturbance on Hackney Avenue. 34 year old Francisco Curiel of Chandler and 46 year old Angela Kennedy of Safford were charged with possession of dangerous drugs and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. The incident also resulted in the arrest of 32 year old Michael Castaneda for domestic violence/disorderly conduct by Globe Police.

Deputies arrested 32 year old Karl Lopez on Hunt Avenue for domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

44 year old Arthur Franco was cited and released for leaving the scene of an accident.

23 year old Matthew Vargas of San Manuel was arrested on Calle De Loma for possession of marijuana.

55 year old Albert Ybarra was arrested Saturday for aggravated DUI.

On Friday, 26 year old Iroquois Sullivan was arrested on warrants for sexual abuse of a minor, child support and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Saturday a resident returned to his home on Elm Street to find someone taking  his property. The suspects fled the area on foot, leaving their car. A deputy towed the vehicle and the incident is under investigation.

Deputies took  reports of shoplifting at the Claypool Circle K and a burglary at Sunrise Mobile Home Park.

Last night Globe Police arrested 61 year old David Garnett for indecent exposure after a disturbance at Copper Country Mobile Home Park.

43 year old Lamberta May was arrested late Saturday night on South Broad Street for aggravated assault.

36 year old Chad Wenger was arrested Friday for doemstic violence/disorderly conduct after a disturbance on South Second Street.

58 year old James Brooks was arrested Friday night for DUI.

Officers are investigating a theft at a residence on Buena Vista Drive; criminal damage at a business on North Broad Street; and criminal damage at a residence on Pinal Street.

Miami Police are investigating an assault report. One juvenile shot another with an air pellet rifle.

GAAC Presentation on Home Safety


The Globe Active Adult Center will have a presentation on home safety today (Monday) from the Gila County Health Department. 

The presentation starts at 10:30am.

Miami Council Meets Tonight


Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

They will consider removing the two flag poles, a tree and sign at Miami Veterans Memorial Park.

There will be a presentation about the Planning Assistance for Rural Areas study.

The Council will consider authorizing the Miami Arts Commission to use the Barcon Building, Veterans Memorial Park, and part of Sullivan Street for the Miami Art Walk on March 29, 30 and 31.

Globe Council Meets Tonight


Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

The meeting includes the  introduction of new firefighter Hanson Colter Taylor; new police officer Robert Craig Jones; and two dispatchers, Denise Barajas and Irene Griffith.

The Council will consider approving the renewal of the Boys and Gorls Club Youth Contract for 2012-2013.

An Executive Session will follow the Regular Meeting.

Obituary


Arda Loraine Bodine High passed away January 22 in Mesa. She was 79. She is survived by her sister; 6 children, including Michael Hernandez of Globe  and Edward Hernandez of Miami; her companion Jim Draper; her special caregiver Johnna Kemper; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Visitation for Arda High is today (Monday)  at 10:30am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Claypool. The funeral is at 11:00.
