Fatal ATV Accident

An ATV rider has died in an accident near Geronimo Estates on Forest Road 64.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office says the driver was traveling south on Forest Road 3099 and trying to get back on Forest Road 64 when he lost control. The driver was found dead, trapped under the ATV.

The accident is believed to have occurred late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

The driver’s identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Globe Police arrested 30 year old Edward Darnell yesterday for fraudulent schemes and possession of dangerous drugs.

23 year old Bethany Pearce was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for shoplifting.

31 year old Edward Brown was arrested yesterday for criminal damage

Miami Police arrested 34 year old Anthony Guerra on two child support warrants.

41 year old Lloyd Holiday was arrested on a child support warrant.

Obituary

Alfred Robles passed away Wednesday night. He was 73.
Visitation for “Bomby” Robles is tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 to 10:am at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is at 10:00.

Co-Ed Softball Tournament February 22-23

The Eddie Longoria and Joe Castaneda Memorial Co-Ed Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday (February 22 and 23) at Besh Ba Gowah Park in Globe.

The registration fee is $175 a team.

Gila County Water Festival

The first Southern Gila County Water Festival will take place on Saturday, March 27 from 9:30am until Noon.

The fun field day celebrating science and water stewardship will be at the Pinal Mountain Little League Complex.

The festival is looking for volunteers to help with the event. There will be a two hour training session on Monday, March 24. For information call 928-402-8589.

Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 56 year old Robert Bates on a DPS warrant for aggravated DUI.

Miami Police arrested 20 year old Cody Arnett on a failure to appear warrant for reckless driving and fleeing officers.

Tribal Items Coming Back to Arizona

The tribal ceremonial items purchased at a controversial auction in France are on their way back to Arizona.

The Annenberg Foundation paid more than $500,000 for the items at the auction so that they could return them to the Hopi and two Apache tribes, including the San Carlos Apache tribe.

The tribes consider the items to be living beings and the foundation says it will honor the request of the tribes to treat them with reverence during the trip.


Globe-Miami Centennial Band to Play During Home Tour

The Globe-Miami Centennial Band will be playing during the Historic Home Tour again this year. It will be at 3:pm on Saturday, March 8 in the Globe High School Auditorium.

'Read Across America' Book Giveaway

The Gila Reading Council will host another “Read Across America” book giveaway on Saturday, March 1 from 10:am until 2:pm at the Claypool Safeway.

Over 300 books will be given to babies through sixth graders. Children must be present to select a book of their choice.

The community is invited to participate in this salute to reading.


Police Log

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 23 year old Corey Green  on a warrant for several counts of child molestation, bestiality, and dangerous crimes against children.

Last night a Globe Police officer contacted two people at a traffic stop. The driver didn't have a driver's license and both of them were undocumented. They were taken to the Gila County Jail and are awaiting extradition to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

21 year old Nayeli Diaz was arrested at a traffic stop for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Diaz also had a contempt of court warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.

28 year old Dilper Bush, Jr. was cited and released last night for DUI.

Haz Mat Team Determines Suspicious Envelope to be Harmless

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office has released an update about the suspicious envelope that was delivered to the Pine-Strawberry Water Improvement District Office.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety Haz Mat team determined that the envelope contained some type of pulverized corn chips. There was no danger to the public or the employees of the water district
.
The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident to determine if there was any criminal activity.


Yuma Street Closed for Emergency Water Line Repair

The City of Globe has closed Yuma Street in both directions to make an emergency water line repair.

The street is closed from the intersection of Yuma Street and Broad Street to the intersection of Yuma Street and High Street until about 2:pm.

Hardscrabble Presentation About Early Arizona Transportation

Former local ADOT Engineer Rick Powers will give the presentation at Wednesday's program in the Miami Hardscrabble Series. 

Powers will discuss the evolution of transportation from the footpaths used by the early Native Americans, through the development of  wagon trains and railroads, and on to the superhighways of today. He will also talk about early transportation modes such as camels and even steam ships.

The presentation starts at 6:30pm on Wednesday (February 19) at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.

The 2014 Globe-Miami March for Babies will be held on Saturday, March 8 at Bullion Plaza Park.

District 1 Republicans to Debate in SaddleBrooke

The four Republican candidates for Congress in Arizona’s District 1 will debate tomorrow (Wednesday) in Saddlebrooke.

Jim Brown, Gary Kiehne, Adam Kwasman and Andy Tobin will be at the Mountain View Country Club in SaddleBrooke tomorrow at 4:15pm.


Police Log

Globe Police arrested 25 year old Vincent Doss late last night at a business on Highway 60 for three outstanding warrants. Further investigation found that Doss was in possession of dangerous drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a weapon.

Yesterday morning Globe Police contacted 34 year old Tito Tarango after receiving information that a runaway juvenile was with him. An officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana. Tarango was detained and his vehicle was seized. A search warrant for the vehicle was obtained and officers found marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Tarango was then booked into the Gila County Jail.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 20 year old Latrina Reyes on a bench warrant for burglary, theft, possession of a narcotic drug, possesssion of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Deputies cited and released Francis Cline at a residence on Golden Street for failure to control a vehicle to avoid an accident, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of an accident and striking a highway fixture.

Miami Police arrested 44 year old Troy Milam on a child support warrant.

Obituary

Filson Russell of San Carlos passed away February 11 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa. He was 64.
The wake for Filson Russell is Friday at 4:pm at the Saraphina Mallow residence in Peridot. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm.

Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 31 year old Matthew Widner at a business on North Broad Street for domestic violence/criminal damage, threats and intimidation, and leaving the scene of an accident.

35 year old John Prall was arrested late last night for use of marijuana.

On Friday 39 year old LeRoy Polk, Jr. was arrested on warrants for DUI and driving with a suspended license.

Three people were arrested by the Gila County Sheriff's Office on Saturday for domestic violence/disorderly conduct. 55 year old Martin Holloway, 52 year old Scott Bullman and 43 year old Dawna Bullman were booked into the Gila County Jail.

25 year old Shawn Hinton was arrested Saturday for possession of dangerous drugs and child abuse.

30 year old David Short was arrested on a warrant for possession and use of drug paraphernalia.

Mesa Police arrested 38 year old Danial Benton of Globe on a child support warrant.

37 year old David Muniz of Miami was arrested by Mesa Police on a warrant for extreme DUI.

Obituary

Anthony Randall of San Carlos passed away February 12 at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. He was 50.
The wake for Anthony Randall is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 4:pm at the Randall residence. The funeral is Wednesday at 10:am at St. Charles Catholic Church.

Doretta Ann Stands of Peridot passed away February 11 at Copper Mountain Inn. She was 56.
The wake for Doretta Stands is Friday (February 21) at 4:pm at the Kelly Stands residence. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm at Burdette Hall.
