Tioga Announces Completion of Gila County Solar Project

Tioga Energy made the public announcement today (Tuesday) about the completion of two solar electric systems for Gila County.

The 390 kW project is expected to generate a lifetime electricity cost savings of $500,000.

The Globe Courthouse now has a 205 kW solar electric system, designed to serve as a shade canopy for the parking lot. The Courthouse will meet about 39% of its electricity needs with solar power.

In addition, a 185 kW solar parking canopy is in place at the Central Heights Complex, where Gila County operations include the Department of Elections and the Office of Emergency Management. This sytem is estimated to meet 84% of that facility’s electric needs.

The County has avoided the expenses associated with system ownership through a 20-year solar power purchase agreement.  Tioga developed, financed, owns, operates and maintains the systems; the County will simply purchase the generated solar electricity from Tioga at rates that are lower than the local utility rates.

Tioga has also provided each facility with an educational kiosk that allows viewers to see realtime system production and weather data along with the corresponding environmental benefits of using solar energy.

However, the statewide number of deaths of children under the care of Child Protective Services is at a six-year high.

The number of child deaths overall has declined. A total of 837 children died in Arizona during 2011. That’s down from 862 in 2010.

Of the 71 child deaths due to abuse in 2011, 34 were cases in which CPS had either a past report or an open case. Fifteen of them were still open at the time of the child’s death. Last year,  of the 70 cases of death due to abuse, 18 had previous CPS intervention. Only five of the cases were open at the time of death. That’s an increase of 66% in the number of open and ongoing CPS cases failing children.

The report also showed a 38% increase in child suicides. The full report is available at www.azdhs.gov.

Resolution Copper to Cut 400 Jobs

Resolution Copper Company has announced that  it will suspend shaft and drilling work at its Superior operation and eliminate about 400 jobs. They say the cuts are the result of continued uncertainty around a proposed land exchange.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports that the cuts amount to about 75% of Resolution’s workforce. Resolution says it can’t  continue without the land exchange, which would give the company  ownership of 2,400 acres of national forest land.

Opponents say the layoff announcement is a ploy to pressure Congress to pass the land exchange bill.

Those opposing the land swap include conservationists and Native American groups, as well as the Obama administration and many Democratic lawmakers. They say an environmental review should be completed before the exchange is made. They also claim  that under Arizona’s 1872 Mining Law,  the mining company would not have to pay royalties to the US government for mineral rights that could be worth billions of dollars.

Native American groups say sacred lands and cultural artifacts would be displaced by the mine.
