Contractor Killed at Pinto Valley Mine

A contractor was fatally injured on Saturday at the Pinto Valley mining operation in Globe-Miami.

BHP Billiton says all operations at the site were immediately stopped and the investigation is continuing.

The Pinto Valley mine is under construction. It is scheduled to restart mining at the end of this year.

Old Dominion Park Opens Saturday

The Old Dominion Historic Mine Park opens to the public on Saturday at 10:am.

Walking trails will lead walkers past foundations and remaining structures, with interpretive signage describing the function and history of the site. The site is family-friendly with wide trails, shaded benches and a large picnic ramada.

A “boneyard” has old mining equipmnt on display with signs to explain how the equipment was used.

The park is open through the cooperative efforts of BHP Copper and the City of Globe. The amenities were built with their generosity, along with several donors who are recognized at the park.

BHP to Restart Pinto Valley Operations

BHP Billiton has announced that it is restarting mining operations at the Pinto Valley mine.

BHP says the operation will produce 60,000 tons a year of copper concentrate and create 650 new jobs. Mining is expected to resume at the end of this year.

Open House for Pinto Valley Mine Proposed Plan of Operations

Tonto National Forest officials are holding an open house tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the Miami Senior Center to encourage public participation in developing an Environmental Assessment for the BHP activities connected to the Pinto Valley Mine proposed Plan of Operations.

The open house is from 5 to 8:pm and you can arrive at any time and view various graphics and talk with experts.
