Miami Marching Band Earns a Silver Rating

Congratulations to the Miami High School Band. The Vandal Marching Band and Flag Squad earned a Silver Place at State Band Day on November 2 held at Desert Vista High School in Awatukee.

The band is directed by Nolan Frost. Senior David McGarry is the drum major  and adult volunteer Paul Buck is assistant director.

The band also received an Excellent rating at EAC Band Day. This qualifies them for State competition.

Play About 'The Mighty Vandals' to be Performed in Miami

A  play about the 1951 Miami Vandals basketball team will be performed in Miami this Saturday and Sunday (October 26 and 27).

The play is called “The Mighty Vandals” and it had a successful premier run at the Peoria Performing Arts Center. 

The story takes place from 1947 to 1951, before the Supreme court banned segregation in public schools. Although Miami High School was integrated, the town’s neighborhoods, elementary schools, and other public facilities were segregated.

The 1951 Vandals team was made up of mostly Mexican and Mexican American teens from the poor side of Miami. The team was considered one of the greatest high school basketball teams in the nation. They broke nine national high school records and 18 state records on their way to a perfect season in 1951.

The performances in Miami are sponsored by the Miami Unified School District and Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold. They will start at 7:30pm on Saturday, October 26 and at 2:pm on Sunday, October 27, in the Miami High School auditorium.

Tickets are $8, $5 for students and seniors.

Student Pick-Up and Drop-Off Moved at Miami Junior/Senior High School

Miami Junior/Senior High School is undergoing a construction project. As a result, they have relocated student pick-up and drop-off to the East parking lot.

They are asking that you drop off car riders  to the left of the parking barriers set up along the loading and unloading zone.

Also please pull forward to the last cone in the left lane to keep traffic movimg.

Miami Jr./Sr. High School Open House

Miami Jr./Sr. High School will have an Open House on Thursday, August 22 from 5 to 7:pm.

Meet the teachers and enjoy a barbecue dinner on their new grill.

Hot dogs, chips and refreshments will be served by the student council.

Globe and Miami High School Registration Begins Today

Globe and Miami High School registration begins today (Monday).

Miami High School seniors register today from 8:am to 3:pm in the Library. Juniors register tomorrow and sophomores on Wednesday.

'Vandal Days' Begin July 22 at MHS

Miami High School presents “Vandal Days” beginning Monday, July 22.

Students and their parents will have an opportunity to register for the school year, purchase a yearbook, receive information about athletic programs and receive class schedules. You can also meet the School Resource Officer and find about available services in the area.

It begins Monday, July 22 for seniors, from 8:am to 3:pm in the Miami High School Library. It continues Tuesday, July 23 for juniors; Wednesday, July 24 for sophomores; and Thursday, July 25 for freshmen. 

Eighth graders can attend on Monday, July 29 and 7^th graders on Tuesday the 30^th.

MHS Mult-Class Reunion This Saturday

All Miami High School alumni are invited to the Multi-Class Reunion picnic this Saturday (May 11). It will be at 11:am at Veterans Memorial Park.

The cost is $5 a person. The menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers, chili beans, drinks and dessert.

If the weather is bad, the event will be take place at the Bullion Plaza Museum.

Miami Jr. and Sr. High School Parent Symposium

The First Annual Miami Jr. and Sr. High School Parent Symposium  takes place on Thursday. It’s from 4 to 7:pm.

Parents will have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers and receive third quarter report cards.

The event also includes representatives from Gila Community College, CVIT Vocational Education, local social service agencies and more.

1972 MHS Championship Game Reunion

The 1972 Miami High School Football Championsip Reunion is going on today (Friday).

A Meet and tour of the Miami Vandal Hall of Fame is at 1:pm.

At 7:00 tonight there will be a Social Hour at the Apache Gold Casino. This is followed at 9:00 by a viewing of the State Championship Game film with comments from caoches and players.

The cost is $15 a person and everyone is welcome.

MHS 1972 Football Championship Reunion

The 1972 Miami High School Football Championship Reunion will be held on Friday, November 23 at the Apache Gold Casino.

The event includes a meet and tour of the Miami Vandal Hall of Fame at 1:pm. Then a social hour at 7:pm at the Apache Gold Casino. This will be followed at 9:pm by a viewing of the Championship Game film with comments from coaches and players.

MHS Canned Food Drive

Miami High School is having a canned food drive from now through Monday, November 5.

Items may be brought to the high school office. The food will be donated to needy families of Miami Jr./Sr. High School.

MHS Class of 1965 'Birthday Celebration'

The Miami High School Class of 1965 is joining their 65 years of age with Arizona’s Centennial to have a “Birthday Celebration” on October 20. It will be held at Miami Memorial Park.

The Miami High School Travel Club  will have a car wash on Saturday at Auto Zone. The club will be there from 10 until 2, washing cars for donations of $5 or more.

MHS Sports Hall of Fame Induction

The Miami Sports Hall of Fame 5th annual induction ceremony will be on Saturday at 1:pm in the Miami High School auditorium. More than 50 athletes will be inducted into either the Miami Sports Hall of Fame or the Wall of Champions.

The public is invited.

Classes at Miami Junior and Senior High School begin August 8. High School students will need to be in their 1st hour class by 7:25, Junior high students by 7:30.

Open House for Junior High will be Wednesday, August 3 beginning in the auditorium. High School Open House will be Wednesday, August 10 at 6:pm beginning in the auditorium then moving to the cafeteria for a barbecue.
