VFW Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser

The Globe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post is having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser tomorrow (Saturday) from 5 to 7:pm.

The meal is $8. The money raised helps local veterans and veteran programs.

'Hiring Our Heroes' Job Fair in Scottsdale

The US Chamber of Commerce Foundation is hosting a hiring fair for veterans and military spouses tomorrow (Tuesday) in Scottsdale.

More than 60 employers are expected to participate. The event also includes a free employment workshop that features one-on-one mentoring sessions on resume building, job search tools, and interviewing techniques.

The event is from 10:am to 1:pm at Monterra at WestWorld in Scottsdale.

Memorial Day Ceremony in Miami

The Town of Miami is having a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday at 9:am. It's at Miami Veterans Memorial Park on Sullivan Street.

There will be light refreshments after the ceremony.

New VA Clinic to be Built in Gilbert

The Department of Veterans Affairs has approved a building contract for a new health clinic in Gilbert. The 60,000-foot,  two-story building  near Mercy Gilbert Hospital will house outpatient services for more than 19,000 veterans each year in Maricopa County and parts of Gila and Pinal County.

Free Lunch for Veterans Today at Miami Senior Center

The Miami Senior Center is hosting a Veterans Day linch today (Thursday) free of charge for veterans and their spouses. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be cooked outside in the new barbecue grill area.

Music will be provided by Jose Sanchez and the Diamonds starting at 11:am.

Free Lunch for Veterans November 10 at Miami Senior Center

On Thursday, November 10, the Miami Senior Center Site Council will host a Veterans Day lunch. The meal will be free for veterans and their spouses. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be cooked outside in the new barbecue grill area.

San Carlos Veterans Parade on November 12

The 45th annual San Carlos Veterans Parade will be held at 10:am on Saturday, November 12 in downtown San Carlos.

Entry forms are available at the Tribal Office, San Carlos Public Library and Bylas Administration.

Miami Veterans Day Activities

The Town of Miami is having a Veterans Day parade, ceremony, cookout and concert on Friday, November 11.

The parade will begin around 10:15am, followed by a ceremony at 11:00. Hot dogs, chips, water and soda will be served at the cookout. There is no charge but donations are welcome. The band Jaded will play for two hours following the ceremony.

Everyone who wants to participate may be in the parade. The only requirement is that the entry must display an American flag. There is no entry fee but you must fill out an entry form and submit it by Wednesday, November 9. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries.

The Town is making a Miami Veterans Wall. Miami residents and former residents are invited to bring pictures of family members who served in the military. Bring them to Miami Town Hall by Tuesday, November 8.

Veterans who would like to set up a display of military items may do so at no cost.

If you would like to donate food or money for the ceremony, there is a donation jar at Miami Town Hall. One will also be at Miami Memorial Park on Veterans Day.

VA Helps Vets Facing Homelessness

The Veterans Administration now has a toll free hotline to help vets who are facing homelessness. Callers receive help with with issues related to health care, houssing, employment and education. All calls are confidential. Call 877-4AID-VET.

AARP Driver Safety Program Free to Veterans in November

The AARP Driver Safety Program is waiving entrance fees to its classroom courses in November in honor of Veteran’s Day. All military personnel, active duty or retired, spouses and dependent children are eligible.

The AARP Driver Safety Program has helped more than 13 million drivers learn safety strategies and adapt to physical and cognitive changes related to aging.

Career Fair Hiring Event for Veterans

A special career fair hiring event for veterans and military spouses will be held in Phoenix next week.

The event will be on Thursday, October 13 from 11:am until 3:pm at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Over 300 veterans and military spouses are expected to attend this opportunity to network with veteran-friendly employers.

Memorial Day Ceremony

The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are having a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday (May 30) at 11:am. It’s at Veterans Memorial Park at Globe City Hall.

The Women’s Auxillary is hosting a pot luck meal immediately following the ceremony at the American Legion Post.

Bill Helps Native American Veterans Get Housing

Congress has passed a bill that would allow more disabled Native American veterans and their families to get housing assistance. The Senate passed the bill this week and it now goes to President Obama. The House bill sponsored by Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick was approved earlier this year.

Assistance for Native American veterans is limited to families making less than 80% of the median income of their area. Compensation for veterans with service related disabilities, or families of those killed in service is treated as income.
The new bill excludes disability and survivor compensation, which may have pushed many veterans over the allowable limits.
