Transportation Board to Consider 17 More Contracts

The State Transportation Board will consider approval of 17 more Recovery Act projects at its meeting this week in Payson. The meeting is Friday at 9:am in the Payson Town Council Chambers.

The list of projects includes pavement sealing of SR 177 and SR 288 in Pinal and Gila Counties. The other Gila County project is the replacement of the safety fence on SR 87 between Payson and Pine.

One of two additional projects to be considered is also in Gila County. It is the construction of 4.5 miles of divided highway on SR 260 at Little Green Valley.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday

Globe School Board meets tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 6:00 for a Public Hearing on the proposed 2009-2010 budget.

Approval of the budget is on the Regular Meeting agenda following the Public Hearing.

After the Regular Meeting, the Board will go into Executive Session to conduct a hearing on a recommendation for expulsion of a student.

San Carlos Health Career Scholarships

The San Carlos Hospital Health Careers committee announces that two scholarships are available for the 2009-2010 year.

The committee wants to help San Carlos Apache college students pursue careers throughout the health care professions. Jobs will be available when the new San Carlos Apache Medical Center opens in the near future.

Applications may be picked up at the I.H.S. Health Education Office, Tribal Health Careers Program, Tribal Education Program, and the Clarence Wesley Health Center in Bylas. The application deadline is July 31. For information call Bob Cassa at 475-7134.

Former ADOT Director Confirmed as Federal Highway Administrator

Former Arizona Transportation Department Director Victor Mendez has been confirmed by the US Senate as Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration. He will begin on July 20.

FHWA says Mendez’s accomplishments in Arizona include the construction of the Regional Freeway System in the Phoenix area that was built six years ahead of schedule. He delivered statewide construction programs on time, including major infrastructure improvements throughout the state. And he worked to improve the agency’s customer service within motor vehicle and highway division offices.

Rep. Kirkpatrick Opens 'Virtual Office'

Representative Ann Kirkpatrick has launched a new official website to serve as her “virtual office.” Kirkpatrick says the purpose of the new website is to make sure that citizens in this large rural district have access to services and have the opportunity to share their thoughts on key issues.

Nobody was hurt in an accident yesterday afternoon at Hill and Sycamore Street.

Globe Police arrested 20 year old Brittney Bowan for possession of marijuana.

22 year old Iroquois Sullivan was arrested early this morning for criminal trespass after trying to enter a residence at Globe Mobile Home Park.

Obituary

Fred Peterson passed away last week in Waverly, New York. He was 73. He is survived by his son Guy Peterson; his daughters Debbie Spitler, Julie Mercer and Lois Carter; and his brother.
A Memorial Service for Fred Peterson will be held Friday at 1:pm at Lamont Mortuary.

Lee Kornegay Open House July 29 (Change)

San Carlos Apache Tribe Will Receive $1.1 Million to Improve Water Services

The San Carlos Apache Tribe is one of eight tribes in Arizona that will benefit from stimulus funds to improve water services. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the Indian Health Service have announced that $90 million will go to projects to increase access to drinking water and sanitation services.

More than $1.1 million goes to the San Carlos Apache Tribe for drinking water system improvements serving 1,055 homes.

Supervisors Meet Tuesday

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at 10:00. They will discuss and possibly adopt the 2009-2010 tentative budget. They will also meet as the Library District Board of Directors to adopt the Library District tentative budget.

Las Lomas Registration This Week

Registration for new Kindergarten, first grade and second grade students at Las Lomas Elementary School takes place through Thursday from 8:am to 3:pm. Call 425-3271, extension 2503 for information.

Children who attended Las Lomas last year do not need to re-register.

Governor Signs Solar Legislation

Governor Jan Brewer has signed legislation that will help Arizona attract solar and renewable energy companies.

The Quality Jobs Through Renewable Industries Program extends tax credits and other incentives to manufacturers of renewable energy equipment if they locate in Arizona and meet other criteria.

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council says several businesses have been waiting for the incentives package to become law before announcing plans to relocate to Arizona. GPEC says they will meet this week with officials fom 25 major solar companies at the Intersolar North American conference in San Franciso.

Arizona Department of Commerce Director Don Cardon says the legislation will help Arizona secure the lead it should have for solar and renewable technologies.

Globe Police arrested 45 year old Robert Holy last night for disorderly conduct at the downtown Safeway.

26 year old Daniel Lopez was arrested Saturday night on a warrant from Pinal County, false reporting to law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers are investigating a report of a runaway juvenile and a theft report at Sonic Drive In; theft from a vehicle at Country Club Annex, and theft from a vehicle on Escudilla Drive.

Obituary

Georgia Ann Victor of Peridot passed away last week at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. She was 60. She is survived by her daughters Melanie and Veronica Victor; her sister; and 3 brothers.

The wake for Georgia Victor is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 4:pm at the Victor residence. The funeral is Wednesday at 8:am at Peridot Baptist Church.
