One driver was cited after a 3 vehicle injury accident yesterday evening at Radanovich and Highway 60.

There was a one vehicle injury accident early yesterday afternoon on Highway 70 at milepost 253.

Yesterday morning Globe K-9 officer Brian Hudson conducted a traffic stop at the highway 60/70 junction. $78,000 in US currency was found with about a pound of methamphetamines. 40 year old Ramon Sagaste from Mexico was booked into the Gila County jail for possession of dangerous drugs for sale and transportation of dangerous drugs.

29 year oldf Mariette Lewis was arrested for domestic/assault yesterday afternoon after a disturbance on Euclid Avenue.

Gila County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of criminal damage at a residence on Morrow. A man entered the residence and assaulted a person was sleeping as well as damaging the property. The suspect was located and placed under arrest.

Gila County Narcotics Task Force arrested 40 year old Roderick Manning of Phoenix and 33 year old Benjamin Harris of Clayton, New Jersey for solicitation to purchase marijuana and conspiracy to purchase marijuana

State Capitol Police arrested 45 year old Ray Baughman of Claypool on a child support warrant.

Tonto 'No Fee Day' on September 25

Tonto National Forest officials say they will join with other agencies in hosting a “no fee” day September 25, in observance of National Public Lands Day.

No Tonto Passes will be required September 25 except at some concessionaire operated campgrounds.

National Public Lands Day is a hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance forests, parks and other public lands. On that day, volunteers build trails and bridges, remove trash and invasive plants, plant trees and restore water resources.

The final no fee day of the year will be on Veterans Day, November 11.

Miami School Board Meets Thursday

Miami School Board meets tomorrow night (Thursday) at 6:30 in the Miami High School Library.

The agenda includes consideration and possible action on the Tobacco Education Prevention Program, the Classroom Site Fund Plan and a Drop Out Prevention Plan.

Arizona Company Receives Grant to Build Statewide Broadband Network

Governor Brewer has announced that a $39 million federal broadband infrastructure grant has been awarded to Arizona based GovNET, Inc. to build a statewide microwave and fiber network. The network will increase broadband availabilty to all 15 Arizona counties.

Brewer says this will not only create jobs, it will also enhance communication between rural schools, libraries, health care providers and law enforcement agencies. And it will bring high speed connectivity to many underserved areas of the state.

About 1:30 this morning a Globe Police officer reported a fuel leak at Pacific Pride. The Globe Fire Department was dispatched to clean up the hazardous material.

39 year old Joseph Demers was arrested at a traffic stop last night for DUI.

Early this morning officers responded to a report of two men trying to break into vehicles at Gila Valley Auto. The case is pending further investigation.

An officer took a report of harassment that occurred at Walmart.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office cited and released 34 year old Ronny Palmer for driving with a suspended license.

A deputy responded to a report of suspicious activity at a residence on Central. A man was seen trying to steal a motor from the residence. He left before the deputy arrived.

Deputies are investigating a theft from a vehicle on McKinney Avenue; a report of theft from a vehicle on Marlin.

Open House for Pinto Valley Mine Proposed Plan of Operations

Tonto National Forest officials are holding an open house tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the Miami Senior Center to encourage public participation in developing an Environmental Assessment for the BHP activities connected to the Pinto Valley Mine proposed Plan of Operations.

The open house is from 5 to 8:pm and you can arrive at any time and view various graphics and talk with experts.

Meetings About Future Management of Fossil Creek

Representatives of the Tonto and Coconino National Forests will host two public meetings next week about the future management of Fossil Creek.

The Fossil Creek planning team is looking for public input to determine management plans for the Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River.

The first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 21 at 6:30pm at the Arizona Game and Fish Office, 5000 West Carefree Highway in Phoenix.

The second meeting will be on Wednesday, September 22 at the Du Bois Center Ballroom on the NAU campus in Flagstaff.

Gov. Brewer Announces $4 Million Economic Aid for Rural Counties

Governor Jan Brewer has announced an additional $4 million in grants for Arizona’s rural counties. Gila County will receive $230,000 for the newly constructed 40 bed women’s detention facility to help reduce overcrowding and non-compliance with Federal Jail Standards. The money will pay for a nurse, a Sergeant and 4 officers.

Obituary

John Bowser, Jr. of Globe, formerly of Safford, passed away last week at St. Luke’s Hospital in Phoenix. He was 67. He is survived by his loving companion of 10 years, Norma Martinez; 7 children; two step children; 5 sisters; 3 brothers; 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Visitation for John Bowser, Jr. will be Saturday at Noon at the Church of Safford. The funeral is Saturday at 1:00.

ADEQ's E-Waste Program Takes In More Than 500,000 Pounds

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality says more than 260 tons of electronic waste were collected during the first year of its free statewide E-Waste recycling program.

In addition to two Globe-Miami events and two in Show Low, 17 other events were held in across the state. More than 500,000 pounds of unwanted e-waste were donated to 3 Arizona based recycling companies. This consisted mostly of televisions, computers, monitors, printers, CD and DVD players and fax machines.

Electronic waste takes up huge amounts of landfill space. If illegally dumped, toxic metals from e-waste can leach into the soil and groundwater.
ADEQ says it will sponsor more e-waste events throughout the state during the fall and winter.

Last night Globe Police arrested 59 year old Bruce Stallings for DUI.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22 year old Steven Vallejos of Globe on an Apache County warrant for failure to appear for damage of property.

Deputies are investigating an assault that occurred at the Miami Schools; vandalism at the County Complex on Landfill Road; a theft report taken at a residence on Eddy Street; and a theft of a license plate at a residence on Cobb Avenue.

Obituaries

Francis William Victor, Sr. of San Carlos passed away Monday at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa. He was 84. He is survived by his sons Anderson and Francis Victor, Jr. of San Carlos; his daughters Veronica and Margaret Victor of San Carlos; and his sister.
The wake for Francis Victor, Sr. will be Sunday at 4:pm at the Victor residence. The funeral is Monday at 10:am at St. Charles Catholic Church.

A Celebration of Life for Al Cooper will be held Wednesday at 10:am at Central Heights Baptist Church.
