Watchdog Group Wants State to Void Prison Contract

The Arizona office of the American Friends Service Committee is asking state leaders to cancel a contract for 5,000 private prison beds. They also want the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and Secretary of State’s Office to investigate the private prison industry’s campaign contributions to push legislation that increases incarceration rates.

The group says it is simply asking for basic transparency for an industry that makes money from putting people in jail.

ACJC Publishes 2010 Arizona Youth Survey

The Arizona Criminal Justice Commission has just published its 2010 Arizona Youth Survey. Their findings show that bullying and dating violence have reached levels of concern. There were decreases in drug use in more than half of the substances measured. But there were increases in the reported use of marijuana, heroin, ecstacy, sedatives, over the counter drugs and chewing tobacco.

Overall results indicate a slight increase in some substance use and a slight decrease in other areas of substance use since the last Arizona Youth Survey in 2006.

GCC Offers Sign Language Course

Gila Community College is offering Beginning American Sign Language 1 this spring at the Gila Pueblo Campus. The class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7:20pm with lab time from 4 to 4:50. The class begins on January 12.

Current students can enroll online at www.gilaccc.org. Others can enroll at the Gila Pueblo Campus in Globe from 8:am until 5:pm.

Miami Still Accepting Parade Entries

The Town of Miami is still accepting enteries for the Veterans Day Parade on Thursday. As of Monday there were 15 entries and they hope to double that by Wednesday at 5:pm.

Check in time for the parade is 9:30am Thursday and the parade starts at 10:15. The ceremony begins at 11:00, followed by a cookout and music in the park.

Entry forms are available at Miami Town Hall.

ADOT Patching Potholes on Gila River Bridge

The Arizona Department of Transportation is patching potholes on the SR 79 Gila River bridge today starting at 9:00. The road work is expected to take four to six hours. One lane of traffic will remain open at all times.

Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police conducted a followup investigation on a burglary report taken on November 1. 19 year old Aubrey Moran was charged with burglary and trafficking in stolen property. 19 year old Steven Gerardo was charged with burglary.

Shortly before midnight an officer conducted a traffic stop. It was determined that a woman in the car had been assaulted by her husband. 30 year old Joseph Duperron was arrested for domestic violence/assault.

Officers are investigating a theft from an auto at an address on East Bailey Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 64 year old Luis Mendivil for disorderly conduct and domestic violence.

Gila Probation arrested 38 year old Augustine Calvillo on a child support warrant.

A deputy responded to a report of a speeding vehicle that pulled into the Claypool Circle K. A check on the vehicle showed that it was reported stolen in Mesa. The suspect fled on foot.

Deputies are investigating a report of criminal damage to a residence on Wheatfield Road.

Obituary

Former Globe-Miami resident Manuel R. Lopez passed away October 29 at Banner Gardens Hospice House. He was 88.
Visitation for Manuel Lopez will be Saturday at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 9:30 and Mass is at 10:00.

New and Redesigned Specialty License Plates

The Arizona Department of Transportation announces that there are several new and redesigned specialty license plates available. These include the redesigned Arizona State University collegiate plate introduced by the ASU Allumni Association during homecoming weekend.

Other recently redesigned specialty plates include Northern Arizona University, Families For Fallen Police Officers and Arizona Sportsman for Wildlife Conservation.

New specialty plates include those for Arizona Agriculture, Masonic Fraternity, Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Suns and Arizona Highways Magazine.

In addition to regular vehicle registration fees, specialty plates cost an additional $25-with $17 of that going to the sponsoring organization.

Globe-Miami Times: Local EDC Board Hears from Citizens Opposed

Jim Moss, who heads up Globe Citizens Opposed to a Private Prison, gave a ten minute presentation on Thursday to the Southern Gila County Economic Development Board who were instrumental in bringing the project to Globe. Although the State has temporarily pulled the RFP (Request for Proposal) on building more prisons by partnering with the private prison industry, the move is simply to allow them to re-write the RFP to include greater security standards. It is expected the project will be back on the table – soon.

Jim Moss, with Citizens Opposed to a Private Prison, addressed the EDC at this month's Board meeting.

The talk was meant to be informational and provide the EDC Board with a greater understanding of the the group's efforts which have included a 3 month petition drive which has gathered over 2000 signatures and a more targeted post card mailing which reaches registered voters and allows them to write a brief comment on why they oppose this issue.

Saturday morning Tri City Fire Department responded to a gas leak on Snedden Street. The leak was contained and Southwest Gas was notified.

Miami Police arrested 25 year old Gery Taylor for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

29 year old Timothy Fish was also arrested over the weekend for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

29 year old Bryan Harris was arrested for theft.

Miami officers also arrested 36 year old Jennifer Curtis for theft.

Globe Police arrested 33 year old Raynell Pizano yesterday for shoplifting at Walmart.

27 year old Edward Gonzales was arrested Friday on a child support warrant.

On Saturday Gila County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 46 year old Kenneth Helsel of Phoenix for disorderly conduct at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

34 year old Ruben Morales of New Mexico was arrested Friday for aggravated assault and criminal damage.

Mesa Police arrested 22 year old Ambra Ruvalacaba of Miami on warrants for probation violation on charges of attempted escape and posesession of drug paraphernalia.

Page Police arrested 35 year old Terry Gonzales of Globe on burglary and theft warrants.

Globe Police are investigating a stolen vehicle from a business on Highway 60; criminal damage at Globe High School; and threats made by a student at Globe High School.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a burglary on Russell Road and a burglary on Broadway.

Obituary

Josephine Padilla Vasquez passed away Thursday at Copper Mountain Inn. She was 96.
Rosary for Josephine Vasquez will be Thursday at 7:pm at Holy Angels Catholic Church. The funeral is Friday morning at 10:00.

Miami Council Meets Tonight

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30. They’ll consider authorizing the formation of the Town of Miami Municipal Property Corporation. They will also discuss and possibly approve salary and benefits for Town Manager Jerry Barnes. And the Council will be introduced to the new Central Arizona Association of Governments Executive Director Brian Tapp.
Councilman Black will present proposals to change the Town of Miami Seal; to require multi-unit rentals to pay separate garbage fees for each unit; and to require all businesses to use the Town of Miami’s garbage service.

Globe Council Meets Tonight

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00. They’ll consider removing the traffic lights at Cedar and Broad and at Oak and Broad Streets. They’ll also hear a presentation on the Governors Rural Business Advisory Council and a presentation about the Salvation Army Christmas program.
