Bessie K. Spaich of Miami has passed away at the age of 92.
The funeral for Bessie Spaich is Friday at 10:am at Miles Funeral Services Miami.
Memorial donations may be made to the Globe-Miami Serbian Cemetery Association.

Gila County Working to Alleviate Tonto Basin Flooding
The Gila County Public Works Department says it is working on three separate projects to help flooding problems in the Tonto Basin area. They have contracted with Westland Resources to try to obtain a permit to allow the replacement of missing riprap on the water diversion dike above the Roosevelt Gardens East Subdivision. Riprap is rock or concrete used to stabilize stream flows. This would help alleviate future flooding in that area.
County staff has also contacted the US Forest Service and Corp of Engineers to coordinate a project to remove dead and down wood.
Gila County is also looking into the possibility of removing some sandbars or islands located in the Tonto Creek area that do not contain critical habitat. County staff is currently working to identify the specific sandbars or islands for further discussion with the agencies that regulate these areas.

Salute to Ranching on December 16
The Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Salute to Ranching on Thursday, December 16. The dinner recognizes the accomplishments of Gila County ranchers.
Nomination forms for Rancher of the Year and Wrangler of the Year are available at the Chamber of Commerce office.

Miami Council Special Meeting
The Miami Town Council will have a Special Meeting tonight (Tuesday) to approve an ordinance to correct typographical errors in the ordinance establishing increased rates for sewage collection.

San Carlos Apache Tribe Wants To Join
Bald Eagle Suit
The San Carlos Apache Tribe is asking a federal judge for permission to join a suit seeking to return Endangered Species Act protections to Arizona's bald eagles.
A federal judge ruled in October that desert nesting bald eagles can be removed from the lists. The Center for Biological Diversity in Tucson then filed a lawsuit to keep about 200 desert bald eagles protected.
The government does not consider Arizona’s eagles to be separate from those elsewhere in the nation. They were declared no longer endangered in 2007.
The San Carlos Apache Tribe says that the eagles are fundamental to their religion.
Allen Still Plans to Introduce GCC Independence Legislation
State Sen. Sylvia Allen says she still plans to introduce legislation to remove roadblocks to Gila Community College independence.
A task force has been looking into the possibility of doing away with the property tax base and population thresholds that keep Gila County from operating its own fully accredited college.
The Payson Roundup reports that many Graham County residents oppose the plan because they believe an independent Gila Communmity College would take money away from Eastern Arizona College. GCC contracts with EAC for administration and accreditation.
Gila Community College pays a 25% overhead fee to Eastern Arizona College on top of all expenses.

Supervisors Meet Tuesday
The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10:am. They’ll have a Public Hearing on the proposed merger of the Cobre Valley Sanitary District and the Pinal Sanitary District. They will also meet as the Gila County Library Board to approve the Library Service Agreement between the Gila County Library District and the Globe Public Library.

There will be a free conference for senior citizens and family caregivers of seniors on Thursday (December 2) at the Apache Gold Casino. They’ll answer your questions about Medicare health plan coverage choices, Arizona long term care, Alzheimer’s Disease, caregiver stress and other important topics. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Hiking Info with Bob Zache
The Second Wednesday program at the Bullion Plaza Museum and Cultural Center will feature Bob Zache, who leads a hiking class at Gila Community College. He’ll share some of the best trails to hike in Southern Gila County. The event will be next Wednesday--December 8--at the museum from 7 until 8:pm. Light refreshments will be served following the program.
Miami Council Meets Tonight
Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30. They’ll appoint a permanent Town Clerk. They’ll also review model ordinances providing zoning regulations for nonprofit medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation sites. The Council will also discuss reestablishing a fee for bulk trash service and a system for cut off and reconnection of sewer service.

Local fire agencies responded to a structure fire Saturday night on View Street. The fire was contained to the chimney and attic areas. There were no injuries.
