Arizona legislators are considering a bill to protect student athletes from head injuries during games. The bill would require all schools to pull a player from a game immediately if a head injury is suspected. ABC15 reports that the player would not be allowed to return until examined and cleared by a doctor.
Studies show that if players return to the game too quickly, another concussion could cause more problems. It can even be deadly.
The Arizona Sports Concussion Network says 40% of players receiving a concussion return to the game too soon.

Miami Hardscrabble Series Talk Wednesday Night
Author Jack San Felice is the speaker tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the Miami Library as part of the Miami Hardscrabble series.
San Felice is the author of the new book “Superstition Cowboys,” which is about the first cowboys and their women who pioneered in harsh desert mountain country.

Bill Would Reduce Use of Interlock
Device for First-Time DUI Offenders
The Arizona Senate is considering a bill to reduce the amount of time that a first time DUI offender will have to have an ignition interlock device.
An ignition interlock device is a breath analyzer that is wired to a car’s ignition. The driver has to blow into the device before the car can be started. If it shows bood-alcohol content above .08, the car won’t start.
Since 2007, a person convicted of DUI has had to have an interlock device for a minimum of one year. A bill sponsored by Sen. Linda Gray would drop that to six months for first time offenders who complete an alcohol or drug education or treatment program.
AZFamily.com reports that Mothers Against Driving Drunk opposes the bill. They say six months is not enough time for offenders to change their behavior.

There was a four vehicle accident yesterday at the Walmart intersection. One driver was cited for failure to control her vehicle to avoid an accident.
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Hill and Sycamore. The vehicle left the scene. The case is under investigation by Globe PD.
Miami Police arrested 22 year old Jacob Napolitano for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Globe Police cited 29 year odl Adam Garcia for excessive speed.

Helen Armer Smith passed away Saturday at Copper Mountain Inn. She was 99. She is survived by her son John Armer; her daughter Sharon Ausloos; 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Visitation for Helen Smith will be Friday at 9:am at Lamont Mortuary. A Memorial Service begins at 10:00.
Contributions to honor Helen Smith may be made to the Gila County Historical Museum.
Dora Cosen passed away last week at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. She was 82. She is survived by 10 children; her brother; 2 sisters; 49 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Meeting to Keep Boys and Girls Club in Globe
A brainstorming session to try to keep a Boys and Girls club in Globe will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Chamber of Commerce office. Stop by between 5:30 and 6:30pm. The club was originally under the San Carlos charter but that is no longer available.
The Boys and Girls Club was serving 40 youngsters a day with after school programs, and it offered an extensive recreation program last summer.

Public Meetings About Improvements to Cutter Road
The San Carlos Apache Tribe invites the public to attend one of two public meetings about safety improvements to Indian Route 6 and the corresponding Environmental Assessment. The first meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday) at Exhibit Hall in Bylas. The second is on Wednesday at the Council Chambers in San Carlos. Both meetings are from 6 until 8:pm and will include the same information.
The Tribe is conducting a Corridor Analysis report and engineering design plans to improve the safety and accessibility of Indian Route 6, also known as Cutter Road.
This is the second round of public meetings to help inform the public about the project and to receive input.

Applications Taken for Clean Elections Commission
Applications are being taken for the Citizens Clean Elections Commission. The Commission oversees a public financing system for political campaigns and promotes voter registration efforts.
Since there are already two Republicans, two Democrats and two Maricopa County residents on the Commission, the current position must be filled by someone outside Maricopa County who is not a member of those two parties.

Chamber Announces Citizens of the Year
The Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award was announced last week at the Dream Manor Inn. This year’s award is shared by Jay Spehar and Mickie Nye.
Spehar was honored for his efforts in area water issues. He served on Globe’s Water Advisory Committee and helped Miami plan a new wastewater treatnment plant.
Nye was cited for his work on the Gila House, which offers transitional living quarters for families, and for the Boys and Girls Club, which offers after school and summer programs for youth.

Miami Council Meets Tonight
Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30. The agenda includes a Public Hearing on an ordinance that establishes disconnection and reconnection fees of wastewater services. The Council may vote on the ordinance following the Public Hearing.
