The Town of Miami Wastewater Advisory Board meets today (Thursday) at 5:30 in the Miami Town Council Chambers.

The meeting is open to the public.

Globe Water Bill Penalties Delayed This Month Only

The City of Globe’s water bills are being mailed late because of software changes. Therefore the bills will not have a penalty added until after April 20. This change is for this month only. All future bills will still be due by the 15^th of the month.

Piranha Swim Team Enrolling Swimmers

The Globe-Miami Piranha Swim Team is now enrolling swimmers to participate in the Central Arizona Swim League. Piranha swimmers practice Monday through Friday and compete on Saturdays with several teams in our area of the state.

This is an opportunity for children 4-18 to get involved this summer in a fun sport  that is also one of the best ways to stay fit.

There is no bench in swimming. Everyone plays.

Registration will be held Tuesday, April 16 from 5:30 until 7:pm at the Globe Community Center park. The cost is $50 a swimmer.

Police Log

There was a two vehicle collision early yesterday afternoon at Monterey Drive and Alhambra. There were no injuries but both cars were towed from the scene.

The Gila County Narcotics Task Force arrested 36 year old Shawn Williams for possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Scott Powell on warrants for child support, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia, threats and intimidation, and driving with a suspended license.

28 year old inmate Steven Earven was served a warrant for child support.

Globe Police arrested 23 year old William Stanley  for domestic violence and criminal damage.

A 17 year old juvenile was arrested for shoplifting yesterday morning at the Hill Street Safeway.

Officers are investigating accidents on Highway 60 and at the US 60 and Main Street junction, and a theft from a vehicle on Birch Street.

Couple Arrested in Connection With Death of Three Year Old

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office has issued a  short press release concerning the arrest of 37 year old Kyron Grow and 29 year old Marcelina Rich. They have been charged in connection with the death of 3 year old Nathaniel Lopez.

Last Tuesday deputies responded to a report of possible child abuse from Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. Nathaniel was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital with life threatening injuries. He died later that afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing any more information because the investigation is ongoing.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday

The Globe School Board meets Wednesday at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

Globe Walking and Running Track to be Resurfaced

The Globe Unified School District announces that the walking and running track will be resurfaced beginning on Monday (April 8). The track will be closed for about two weeks. The District says the resurfacing will extend the life of the track another five to seven years.

The community is encouraged to continue to use the track after it is resurfaced. But they ask that you follow a few simple rules to make sure the track will last longer:
No bikes, rollerblades or skateboards.
Please use the outside three lanes to preserve the inside lanes for the school track team.
Pick up any trash you have brought with you.
And no pets allowed.

Watch for the project to be completed in the next few weeks.

Police Log

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Kyron Grow for first degree murder.

The Sheriff’s Office assisted Child Protective Services with the removal of children from a residence on Maple Leaf. Several people were charged with child neglect. 33 year old Shawn Songer, 55 year old Amelia Songer, 32 year old Roxanne Davis, 37 year old Richard Wheeler, 28 year old Angel Wheeler, and 47 year old Michael Winnick were all arrested. The case is under further investigation.

22 year old Zackery Baxter was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence and criminal damage after a disturbance at a residence in Copper Hills.

Deputies are investigating criminal damage to a vehicle on Braley Street.

Miami Police arrested 23 year old Jordan Tarango for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

Globe Police are investigating criminal damage at a residence in Ruiz Canyon and criminal damage at a business on East Ash Street.

Obituaries

Marilyn Charlee Martin of Globe passed away March 28 at Heritage Healthcare Center. She was 80. She is survived by her brother Jack Larimore of Globe.

Visitation for Marilyn Martin will be Friday at 10:am at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is at 11:00.

Nathaniel Luke Anthony Lopez of Globe passed away March 26 at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He was 3 years old. He is survived by his parents Mark Lopez and Marcelina Rich; his sisters Geovanni Rich and Aniya Lopez; his brothers Xavier Vidales and Marcus Lopez, Jr.

The funeral for Nathaniel Lopez is Saturday at 10:am at River of Life Church.

Supervisors Meet Tuesday

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets Tuesday at 10:am.

There will be a presentation by the Tri City Regional Sanitary District about a proposed  wastewater treatment solution for the district.

The Supervisors will consider a Resolution supporting Governor Brewer’s plan to restore Medicaid.

They will proclaim April 14 through 20 as Week of the Young Child in Gila County. They will also proclaim April as National County Government Month and encourage related activities throughout the month.

Group Forms to Support Resolution Copper; Opposition Also Growing

A group of citizens and business owners in Superior have created a new organization they say is intended to support local economic and community development efforts and hold local elected officials accountable.

The Superior Copper Alliance  was formed following the Superior Town Council’s withdrawal of support for the Resolution Copper project. They helped gather more than 400 signatures on a petition giving support to the mine project and have spoken out against the actions of the Town Council.

The Superior Copper Alliance has also taken out recall petitions against  Councilmember “Kiki” Peralta. She has raised concerns about water and environmental issues. Peralta says the plan of operations for the mine still needs to be disclosed and discussed.

The Superior Town Council has terminated its Mutual Benefirts Agreement  with Resolution Copper, saying  it required the town to borrow $8 million to purchase land already owned or permitted to the Town.

The Queen Valley Homeowners Association has passed a resolution opposing the bill. It says the mining company has been pumping 900,000 gallons of water a day out of the Queen Creek drainage area, which they say is water their community depends on.

The City of Globe recently  tabled a resolution of support for the Land Swap bill, largely because of concerns over the copper company’s requirement for 40,000 acre feet of water a year. Globe Councilmember Dezi Baker says that amount of water could supply the City of Globe for 16 years. He says he cannot support the bill without full disclosure about the mining company’s water needs and its compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

The Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce has stated its support for the bill.

Opponents say the mine would destroy an area set aside in 1955 by President Eisenhower that is sacred to the San Carlos Apache Tribe.

Kirkpatrick Launches Resource Page for Veterans

Representative Ann Kirkpatrick has launched an online page devoted to Distict One veterans. The Veterans’ Resources page can be found at Kirkpatrick’s House of Representatives website.

The page provides helpful links and answers to a variety of veteran-specific questions about everything from the GI Bill to vocatiobnal rehabilitation. The page also includes links to local sources of support.

Storm Spotter Training in Globe April 20

A free training will be held in Globe on Saturday, April 20 to teach you how to be a National Weather Service Storm Spotter.

You will learn how thunderstorms work, how to identify cloud features associated with microbursts and tornadoes, and how to visually estimate wind speeds.

The training session will take place from 10 to Noon on April 20 at the Gila County Emergency Management Office on Apache Avenue in Globe.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle hit and run collision last night on North Broad Street.

Another hit and run accident occurred a short time later on Highway 70 involving a car and a pedestrian. Both accidents are being investigated by Globe Police.

A Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy followed up on a previous report in the area of Highway 60 and the Bell Air Motel. 45 year old Glen Edwards was arrested for theft of means of transportation.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage from BB guns in the area of English Avenue; a report of a disturbance at a residence on Wheatfields Road; a domestic incident at a residence in Alhambra; and criminal damage to a residence on Woodward.

Globe Police are investigating a theft from a vehicle on Courtney Lane.

The Department of Public Safety in Phoenix arrested 47 year old Chris Benavidez of Globe on a failure to comply warrant for disorderly conduct.
