Naomi Ruth Steele of Miami passed away January 30 in Payson. She was 89.

The funeral for Naomi Steele is Saturday at 10:30am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church  in Miami.

Towed Truck Separates and Crashes into Another Vehicle Causing Minor Injuries

Last night a semi-truck tractor separated from the truck that was towing it and crashed into another vehicle, causing minor injuries.

An eastbound semi–truck was towing three other semi-truck tractors on Highway 60 when one of the trucks separated and crossed into oncoming westbound traffic. The driverless truck collided head on into a car driven by a couple from the Casa Grande area.

The driver of the first semi-truck was stopped in Globe by a DPS officer who noticed that the truck had no taillights. The rear lighting remained with the separated vehicle.

Neither of the drivers were  injured. A passenger in the westbound vehicle was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.

The semi-truck was taken out of service for multiple equipment violations.

Two People Arrested in Globe Drug Bust

Yesterday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies arrested two people after executing a search warrant on Courtney Lane in Globe.

Sixty-one year old Robert Healy and 46 year old Anna Casillas were taken into custody. 

The Gila County Drug, Gang and Violent Crimes Task Force seized methamphetamine along with numerous firearms and drug paraphernalia items.

Charges are pending, ranging from possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drugs for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia, misconduct involving weapons in a drug offense, and child abuse.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Gila County Attorney’s Office, San Carlos Recreation and Wildlife and the Globe Police Department.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 56 year old Diana Walls for driving under the influence of drugs.

37 year old Ky Altaha was arrested for extreme DUI.

56 year old roger Longknife was arrested for criminal damage at a business on North Broad Street.

Obituary

Curtis Wayne Red Bird of Peridot passed away February 3 at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. He was 53.

The wake for Curtis Red Bird is Saturday (February 15) at 4:pm at the Red Bird residence. The funeral is Sunday at 1:pm at San Carlos Miracle Church.

Arizona Schools Chief Plugs Private Schools in Robocall

Yesterday (February 11)  thousands of Arizona residents received automated telephone “robo-calls” from Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal encouraging parents to consider private schools. It’s part of a $250,000 media campaign promoting “Empowerment Scholarship Accounts.”  That’s state money that pays for private schools and supplies.

In an interview with 12News, Huppenthal defended his participation in the campaign by saying that all kids are part of the “public” and that he is not the Superintendent of  “Public Schools.”

Former Assistant Arizona Attorney General and public education advocate Vince Rabaga responded on his website that “Actually, he is.” Rabaga says the Arizona Department of Education’s own website says that the Superintendent’s job is to “superintend” the K-12 public education system in Arizona…This involves providing for the students of Arizona a uniform public school system.”

Arizona Education Association advocate Jennifer Loredo called Huppenthal’s robocall “pathetic.”

ADOT Website Gives Wait Times at MVD Offices

Even though we don't have the long lines at the Globe MVD office that they have in the Valley and in Tucson, you still might save some time by checking the wait time online.

The ADOT website now gives the current wait times at all MVD offices, updated every five minutes.

Police Log

A pedestrian received minor injuries when hit by a car yesterday afternoon on Highway 60.

Last night Globe Police arrested two people while conducting a followup on a previous case. 26 year old Richard Woodard was charged with theft and use of marijuana. 57 year old Jim Woodard was charged with possession and use of marijuana.

25 year old Nathaniel Little was arrested on a warrant for shoplifting.

24 year old Edward Shaw was arrested for trespassing early this morning at a business on East Ash.

The Gila County Task Force arrested 31 year old Michelle Rene for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

21 year old Michael Jimenez was arrested on a failure to appear warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Obituary

Wilma Mae Ihrig of Globe passed away February 6 at East Valley Hospice in Apache Junction. She was 86.

A graveside service for Wilma Ihrig will be held Thursday (February 13) at 1:pm at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Mesa.

Her family requests that donations in her name be made tio East Valley Hospice.

Shirley Ann Hinton of San Carlos passed away February 6 at Hospice of the Valley-Ryan House in Phoenix. She was 51.
The wake for Shirley Hinton will be held Friday (February 14) at 4:pm at the Audrey Chatlin residence. The funeral is Saturday at 1:pm at Burdette Hall.

Two women received non-life threatening injuries Thursday night (February 6) when a travel trailer burst into flames near Pineway and Wilson Streets in Claypool. They were flown to a Valley hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

26 year old Amber Lucero was arrested early this morning on a failure to comply warrant for theft.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 35 year old Robert Palmer of Whiteriver for shoplifting at a business on Hill Street.

29 year old Shea Payton was arrested Friday for domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

24 year old Monica henry was arrested on an assault warrant.

49 year old William Salter was arrested on warrants for shoplifting and criminal trespass.

40 year old Kevin Babb was arrested on a warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Miami Police arrested 32 year old Marvella Upshaw for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 49 year old Todd Hamlet on a contempt of court warrant for criminal nuisance.

Miami Council Meets Tonight at 6:30

Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30.

The agenda includes direction to staff to take necessary action related to renewing the Town’s Alternative Expenditure Limitation or approving a Permanent Base Adjustment to the Town’s expenditure limit.

The Council will consider awarding the Bullion Plaza Gym Management Services Contract to Miami Genesis, Inc.

There will be presentations about a Meals on Wheels fundraiser and the Bullion Plaza Quarterly Report.

The Council will also discuss and possibly approve a concept proposal from Globe and Miami to provide wastewater treatment services to the Tri-City Sanitary District.

Globe City Council Meets Tonight at 6:00

Globe City Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:00.

The agenda includes a discussion to authorize City staff to post a Notice of Intention to increase water and wastewater rates and fees; a Resolution adopting the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices with revisions and a supplement for the City of Globe; a resolution adopting the City of Phoenix Traffic Barricade Manual with amendments for the City of Globe; a resolution relating to projects for consideration in the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Plan; discussion and consideration of sub-grantee agreements for the Arizona Department of Homeland Security Grant Award; and discussion and consideration for the Arizona Rural Economic Development Grant.

Globe City Manager Brent Billingsley will introduce new Museum Supervisor Leanna Asberry.

An Executive Session will follow the Regular Meeting.

Obituary

Former Globe resident Robert G. Vasquez of  Pasadena, California passed away February 7. He was 85.
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
