Gold-N-Oldies Car Show

Gold-N-Oldies Car Club holds its 18th Annual Car Show on Saturday, October 16 in downtown Miami. It will be from 7:am until 3:pm. All proceeds from the show go to local charities such as the Gila Community Food Bank, the Globe Salvation Army and Our Lady’s St. Vincent. Lions Club Presents Eyeglass Processing Event

The Globe Lions Club presents an Eyeglass Processing Event Monday night at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. This is an opportunity to see what happens to all the old eyeglasses that club members collect. The event starts at 7:00.

Globe Council Meets Monday

Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm. The Council will proclaim Friday, September 24 as Boys and Girls Clubs Day for Kids. The meeting will also include a presentation by Gila Regional Partnership Council.

Obituary

Former Globe resident Ronnie Eugene Holguin passed away Wednesday at his home in Chandler. He was 40. He is survived by his wife Anita; 2 daughters; his brother; 3 sisters; and his parents Roland and Vera Valencia, Sr. of Globe.
Visitation for Ronnie Holguin will be Monday from 9 to 10:am at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is at 10:00.

Miami Seeks Input for EPA Grant Application

The Town of Miami is seeking public input for a grant application to the US Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA administers a Brownfields Grant Program that annually provides nearly $75 million to communities and non-profit organizations to address contaminated property.

One part of the program is called Community Wide Assessment Grants. That’s where a town can apply for grants to develop an inventory of Brownfields, conduct community involvement activities, and conduct site assessment and cleanup planning.

The Town will host two public meetings in the Miami Council Chambers on September 29 and October 6 to discuss the grant application and to gather public input. You can also view the grant application at Miami Town Hall.

Author Seeks Photos for Book About Miami

Author and historian Dr. Santos Vegas will be at the Miami Memorial Library today (Friday) from 10 until 3 and tomorrow from 9:am until Noon. Dr. Vegas is in town to scan photos for his upcoming book “Around Miami” which will be part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. The older the photo the better. All photographs will be returned to you immediately.

Gila County Fair Continues Through Sunday

The Gila County Fair continues today through Sunday. There's lots of live entertanment, a carnival, exhibits, go cart races, rodeo events and more.

For rodeo fans there is bull riding and goat roping, followed by an open air dance at the arena tonight (Friday). There’s a big Ranch rodeo competition and goat roping tomorrow (Saturday) during the day.

Go cart racing will be held tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

The Apache Crown Dancers will perform tomorrow at 11:am and 1:pm. San Carlos Royalty from the various schools will be introduced. Native American craft items will be offered for sale.

Entertainment begins tomorrow at 4:pm with Chris Petty and his “Dance Party,” alternating with the Slightly Right country and rock band until 8:30.

Something new has been added for the very young kids. Big Wheel races for 2 to 12 year olds begin at 9:30 tomorrow morning. Bring your own trikes or other pedal-driven little vehicles, but no two wheelers.

Police Log

A two vehicle accident with injuries occurred yesterday evening on North Broad Street. One driver was cited for failure to control her vehicle to avoid an accident.

A Rhode Island woman was arrested late yesterday morning after Globe Police and EMS were called to Fry’s for a possible overdose. 32 year old Ariel Harmon was charged with use of dangerous drugs.

51 year old Timothy Artoff of Mesa was arrested for shoplifting yesterday evening at Fry’s.

51 year old Barney Absher was arrested at a traffic stop last night for DUI.

A Gila County Sheriff’s deputy arrested 24 year old Rafael Villela on a DUI warrant.

Opinion: Globe Politicians Still Want a Private Prison!

The current proposal for a Globe private prison appears to be dead (for now) but I'm disappointed that local politicians still haven't rejected the idea itself. Even if it could be arranged so that Globe and its taxpayers could be protected from any financial loss, this is still a moral and ethical issue.

To say that ethical arguments should not be part of the discussion is a sign of remarkably shallow and unenlightened leadership. This is not the first time that money and the vague promise of future jobs have been enough to make anything else acceptable.

There's a multitude of information about shady dealings by the private prison industry. (If you yourself haven't done anything wrong, you are not blameless if you know your partner is a crook.) Plus the fact that the more prisoners there are, the more money the prisons make. This leads to the very real possibility that some people may be put in jail who don't really deserve to be there.

It's no coincidence that some strong anti-immigrant politicians have ties to the private prison industry.

If incarcerating human beings for profit is the best idea that our community leaders(?) can come up with, we're in big trouble.

The Emerald City: A Risky Partnership

Several months ago, the Globe City Council in a 4-2 vote gave the green light to Private Prison developers; the Emerald Companies and James Parkey, to bring a private prison to Globe as part of a DOC plan to build 5000 more beds in the State.

Since then, some who voted for the “green light” have admitted that they have reservations including:

1: They don’t believe the numbers which Parkey and Emerald are presenting in their package. IE: The number of jobs, the amount of revenue, or the ease at which “beds will be filled.”

2: Therefore they concede it is a “risky” venture to those who choose to invest in this project – but they make the distinction between the investors and the “rest of us” who will get all the benefits and none of the risk.

3. Yet, they admit they don’t trust Emerald Companies and James Parkey.

And still, the City Council wants to move forward with bedding down with the very same Emerald Companies & James Parkey.

This determination to build a private prison on our back doorstep with these people appears to confirm a lack of good old fashioned business sense.

Anyone in business who has ever considered bringing on a partner knows how difficult this can be. Most partnerships are formed to fill a need in the business; talent, financial or otherwise. And many a business has made the mistake of taking on a partner because it seemed to be expedient at the time, only to find their problems compound.

While some partnerships do result in a win-win for both parties, others result in ugly ‘divorces’ as business owners discover their new found partner more concerned with what they are getting OUT of the business than what they can put INTO the business.

Historically, this appears to be the blueprint for those selling their services to develop and manage for-profit prisons. It would seem then that all signs point to saying NO to this proposed partnership. It is simply bad business to enter into a business partnership with people you don’t trust from the beginning.

One driver was cited after a 3 vehicle injury accident yesterday evening at Radanovich and Highway 60.

There was a one vehicle injury accident early yesterday afternoon on Highway 70 at milepost 253.

Yesterday morning Globe K-9 officer Brian Hudson conducted a traffic stop at the highway 60/70 junction. $78,000 in US currency was found with about a pound of methamphetamines. 40 year old Ramon Sagaste from Mexico was booked into the Gila County jail for possession of dangerous drugs for sale and transportation of dangerous drugs.

29 year oldf Mariette Lewis was arrested for domestic/assault yesterday afternoon after a disturbance on Euclid Avenue.

Gila County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of criminal damage at a residence on Morrow. A man entered the residence and assaulted a person was sleeping as well as damaging the property. The suspect was located and placed under arrest.

Gila County Narcotics Task Force arrested 40 year old Roderick Manning of Phoenix and 33 year old Benjamin Harris of Clayton, New Jersey for solicitation to purchase marijuana and conspiracy to purchase marijuana

State Capitol Police arrested 45 year old Ray Baughman of Claypool on a child support warrant.

Tonto 'No Fee Day' on September 25

Tonto National Forest officials say they will join with other agencies in hosting a “no fee” day September 25, in observance of National Public Lands Day.

No Tonto Passes will be required September 25 except at some concessionaire operated campgrounds.

National Public Lands Day is a hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance forests, parks and other public lands. On that day, volunteers build trails and bridges, remove trash and invasive plants, plant trees and restore water resources.

The final no fee day of the year will be on Veterans Day, November 11.
