Globe Council Meets Monday

Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm. The Council will consider an ordinance concerning medical marijuana dispensaries. They will also discuss whether to publish a Request For Proposals for a medical marijuana dispensary or to authorize the City to apply for a medical marijunana dispensary to be operated under police supervision.

4-H Canned Food Drive

The Southern Gila County 4-H Community Club is holding a canned food drive through December 10. All donated items will stay in the local area. Help 4-H help those in need by dropping off canned food at Central Arizona Wireless, Hicks Chiropractic and Heritage Healthcare Center.

Globe Senior Center Holiday Meal Campaign

The Globe Senior Center has launched a Holiday Meal Campaign to raise finds for homebound and disabled seniors as well as others in the community. The Center has received a matching grant of $2000 to double the donations. For more information contact the Globe Senior Center at 425-9030.

AZ Gas Prices Up Again This Week

Gas prices rose in Arizona for the second straight week. AAA Arizona says the statewide average price for a gallon of unleaded regular is a little over $2.78 a gallon. That’s an increase of nearly 3 cents from last week. The nationwide average is a little less than $2.89 a gallon, an increase of 2.4 cents.

Here in Globe-Miami, prices are around $2.74 a gallon.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in an accident yesterday afternoon at Sycamore and Broad Street.

No injuries were reported in an accident yesterday on Highway 60 at Radonovich Drive.

Tri City and Canyon Fire Departements responded to a report of a fire at Madera Peak Apartments. There wasn’t a fire but one person was taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

A Gila County Sheriff’s deputy arrested 24 year old Jonathon Magana yesterday. He was held by Apache Gold Casino security for possession of marijuana. Magana also had a Graham County warrant for dangerous drugs.

Globe Police arrested 18 year old Dominique Gilmore for shoplifting.

24 year old Kylie Smith was arrested for violation of a court order.

Officers are investigating a report of indecent exposure at Globe High School; a break in at a residence in Pioneer Hills; a theft at a business on Willow Street; a theft at a business on South East Street; and a report of shoplifting at Walmart.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating thefts from vehicles on Navajo and Daybreak.

Alcohol Energy Drinks Banned

The US Food and Drug Administration has effectively banned the sale of alcoholic energy drinks by declaring that that caffeine is an unsafe food additive to alcohol drinks. There have been an increasing number of reports of teens and college students being hospitalized after drinking the beverages.

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard says he applauds the move. For several years his office has warned about the potential danger of alcohol energy drinks. He says some of them are packaged to look like non-alcoholic energy drinks. And some contain the alcoholic equivalent of four to five beers, and the caffeine equivalent of four to five colas, or one or two cups of coffee, in just one can.

The federal Alcohol Tax and Trade Bureau says it will require distributors and retailers to stop selling the alcohol energy drinks identified as unsafe by the FDA.

Idea House Saturday from 11 to 4

The Friends of the Globe Library’s Idea House is Saturday from 11 until 4. It is hosted by Karen and Greg Gotto. Parking will be at the Elks Lodge with a shuttle to the Idea House.

There will be crafts for sale, entertainment, food and baked goods. Entry is $2 for adults or 2 canned food items; $1 for kids or 1 can of food.

Raffle tickets for a ring donated by United Jewelry, a fall basket valued at $200, and a free stay at Dream Manor Inn, are available at the Globe Public Library.

Proceeds go to the Friends of the Library Building Fund and the Gila Community Food Bank.

Independent Riders Toy Run

The Independent Riders Toy Run takes place on Saturday. It starts at 9:30 at the Community Center in Globe. The run will go to the VFW and Porter’s in Superior, head back to the Copper Parrot in Globe, then to the Huddle and finally to the Shamrock in Claypool.

Food will be served for the riders at Shamrock. Entertainment will be provided by the 74th Street Band. Everyone is welcome.

Proceeds go to sponsor local families in Globe-Miami and Superior for Christmas.

Foods and Plants Demonstration

The Tonto Basin Ranger District presents a demonstration this weekend featuring “Foods of the Superstitions” and “Plants of the Sonoran Desert.”

Author Don Wells will talk about the specimens, where they are found, what they look like and the medicinal use of the plant, seed or fruit. Author Jean Groen will talk about old Native American recipes and the modern recipes she has developed using the products.

The event is from 10 to 4 on Saturday and Sunday at the Rossevelt Lake Visitor Center.

New Miami Postmaster to be Sworn In on Friday

The swearing in ceremony for new Miami Postmaster Marie Zenczak takes place Friday at 11:am at the Miami Post Office. The public is invited.

A brush fire was quickly put out early this morning on Birch Street.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 60 year old Dora Padilla for domestic violence and disorderly conduct after a disturbance on Golden Hill.

Depuites are investigating burglaries at Roosevelt Estates, on Central Drive and at the Schultz Ranch.

Globe Police are investigating a burglary on East Bailey.

Obituary

Minnie Tonto Thinka of San Carlos passed away Monday at San Carlos Indian Hospital. She was 82. She is survived by her daughter Nadine Thinka; her son Moran Thinka, Sr.; her brother; 15 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
The wake for Minnie Thinka will be Saturday at 4:pm at the Thinka residence. The funeral is Sunday at 10:am at Burdette Hall.

Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Up 9 Percent

The Arizona Farm Bureau says the cost of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner has risen 9% over last year. But it’s cheaper than it was two years ago. The average feast will cost about $44.

Without factoring in store coupons or specials, the cost of a 16 pound turkey will cost Arizonans around $16.80 this year, or $1.05 a pound. That’s a 7% increase in the cost of a turkey.

Miami School Board Meets Thursday

Miami School Board meets Thursday at 6:30pm in the Miami High School Library. Among other things, they’ll consider Intergovernmental Agreements with Gila Community College and and Cobre Valley Institute of Technology.
