Globe Council Meets Monday

Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm. The Council will consider granting a license and conditional use permit for Medical Marijuana Related Facilities to "Globe Farmacy" at 200 W. Ash and 200 N. Broad Street.

Gas Prices Continue to Rise

Gasoline prices are rising for the 11th week in a row. AAA Arizona says the average statewide price for a gallon of unleaded regular is $3.10. That’s an increase of 6.5 cents since last week and the highest statewide fuel price on record for the month of February.

The nationwide average is just under $3.12 a gallon.

Here in Globe-Miami prices are around $3.11.

Humane Society Thrift Store Need Donations

High Desert Humane Society announces that their new Thrift Store in downtown Globe had a fantastic first month of operation. But now they are already low on inventory. They need more donations to keep operating.

The donations can include almost anything—collectibles, DVD’s, CD’s, books, household items, clothing—just about any new or gently used items that can be sold. They will also do all the work involved to set up estate donations.

There was a two vehicle accident yesterday afternoon at Chaparral Loop and Picacho Street.

Globe Police arrested 41 year old Elvis Kinney for 3 contempt of court warrants.

Gila County Sheriff’s office is investigating a report of a hit and run taken at a residence on Russell Road.

'Dump the Drugs' on Saturday

Copper Basin Coalition is sponsoring a “Dump the Drugs” event on Saturday from 8:am until noon in the Fry’s parking lot. It’s an opportunity to drop off expired or unused prescription and over the counter drugs.

You can also drop off the drugs anytime at the Globe and Miami Police departments.

Family Night at the Museum

Tomorrow night (Friday) is Family Night at the Gila County Historical Museum. It’s an opportunity for everyone to see the special Smithsonian exhibit now on display. From 4 to 8:pm Friday there will be gifts and a treasure hunt for the children.

The “Foods of America” exhibit will be at the museum until March 13. Museum hours during the exhibit are 10 to 4 on Mondays through Thursdays, 10 to 8:pm on Fridays, and 11 to 6 on Saturdays. There is no admission charge.

Two Workshops Friday at Senior Center

Globe Senior Center is hosting two workshops on Friday. The first one at 10:30am will discuss credit reports, what they say about you and how they can be improved. The workshop at 12:30 will talk about debt and how to avoid debt issues. Attend either or both workshops and lunch is free. Sign up in advance by calling 425-9030.

Research Suggests Higher Stroke Risk from Diet Soda

New research has raised health concerns about diet soda. KGUN9 reports that findings from a federally funded study in New York suggest that people who drink diet soda every day have higher risks for stroke and heart attack than people who drink no soda at all.

Doctors don’t know why diet soda may be risky. Maybe people who drink lots of soda also fail to exercise, weigh more or have other risk factors like high blood pressure. But the researchers took these factors into consideration and the trend remained.

The study was discussed Wednesday at an American Stroke Association conference in Los Angeles.

Sheriff's Office Needs Help Identifying Woman's Body

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a young woman whose body was found in the forest off Young Road in June. She may have been dead for as long as six months before the body was found.

The woman is described as White or Hispanic, 18 to 24 years old, 5’6’’ to 5’7’’ tall, 110 to 120 pounds, with shoulder length brown hair. Her toenails and fake fingernails were painted bright blue. She also had a size 5 stainless steel ring with a square white stone setting.

The FBI did a facial assimilation and released the above photos yesterday.

Miami Police arrested 30 year old Valerie Stewart on five failure to comply warrants for issuing bad checks, drug paraphernalia violations and possession of marijuana.

Tempe Police arrested 26 year old Ramirez Ayson of Globe on a warrant for failure to comply on charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of property damage at the Claypool Circle K.

Globe Police are investigating a burglary at a residence on Maurel and criminal damage to a fence on Quartz Loop.

College Independence Bill Passes Committee

The Payson Daily Bugle online newspaper reports that the Arizona Senate Education Committee has approved a bill that would make it easier for Gila Community College to become independent.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Sylvia Allen and Sen. Rich Crandall, who is Chairman of the Committee. If the bill is approved by the full Legislature, it would amend Arizona Revised Statutes relating to community colleges by allowing provisional colleges to meet certain criteria to gain independence.

A similar bill in the Arizona House is sponsored by 5th District Representatives Brenda Barton and Chester Crandell.

Gila Community College is a provisional college and contracts with Eastern Arizona College for administrative services. EAC makes all decisions concerning budget, program and tuition, and charges a 25% overhead fee for its services.

GCC Governing Board Special Meeting

Gila County Community College Governing Board meets Thursday afternoon at 1:30. The agenda includes a discussion about community college redistricting with Gila County elections officials.

This Special Meeting will be in the Gila County Courthouse Conference Room

Disaster Loans Available

The federal government is offering low interest loans to small businesses that were affected by flooding or winter storms.

Businesses in Gila and 5 other Arizona counties can apply to borrow up to $2 million from the Small Business Administration to replace damaged or destroyed propery, equipment, inventory or other assets. Eligible homeowners and renters can also apply.

Disaster declarations cover Gila, Coconino, Navajo and Yavapai counties as a result of an October flood on the Havasupai reservation that forced the evacuation of tourists and damaged infrastructure.

Mohave and La Paz counties are covered as a result of severe winter storms that hit parts of California and Arizona in December and January.
