Globe Receives 'We Hear You America' Check Saturday

The Reader’s Digest custom RV will be in Globe tomorrow (Saturday) to deliver a stimulus funds check as part of the “We Hear You America” tour. The check will be presented to the mayor at noon at the Old Historic Jail in downtown Globe.

Citizens of each city where the RV stops can sign up to win the RV.

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday evening at Maple and Parker. One driver was cited for failure to yield.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Bernadine Encizo for domestic violence and domestic assault.

26 year old Jimmy Moltz was arrested for domeestic violence/disorderly conduct.

34 year old Rebekah Mathews was arrested on warrants for disorderly conduct and issuing a bad check.

Globe Police arrested 26 year old Eddie Benavidez on a child support warrant.

Officers are investigating criminal damage to an apartment complex on East Ash Street and criminal damage to the Central Heights Laundromat.

Apache Leap Mining Festival this Weekend in Superior

The 23rd Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival takes place this weekend in Superior.

Saturday’s events start at 10:am with a parade and opening ceremonies followed by a carnival and food booths, along with entertainment and the mining competition.

Sunday’s festivities start at 10:am and include a Junior Mining Competition for youth 10 to 17.

Child Restraint Law Passes AZ House

A proposed child restraint law has made it through the Arizona House. It now goes to the state Senate.

Arizona’s current law allows children to be moved from a car seat to an adult seat belt at the age of 5. But studies show that children using an adult seat belt without a booster seat can suffer serious head, spine and abdominal injuries. They may slip out of the belt or even be ejected from the vehicle in a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says proper use of a safety seat can reduce child fatality risk up to 71%. It can reduce injury risk by up to 59%.

Arizona Senate Approves Ban on Texting While Driving

The Arizona Senate has approved a bill that would ban texting while driving. The bill would make it a non-moving civil traffic violation to manually enter information into a handheld wireless device to write, send or read written messages while driving.

The Arizona Republic reports that drivers would still be allowed to make telephone calls. And texting would be allowed if your vehicle is stopped in traffic but not at a red light or stop sign.

A violation would be punishable by a $50 fine. That increases to $200 if you are involved in an accident.

The bill now goes to the state House.

ADOT 5 Year Program Available Online

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Tentative 5-Year Program is now available online for the public to review and comment. It shows how ADOT plans to spend its allocated budget over the next five years.

Globe Police were dispatched to the Hill Street Safeway yesterday afternoon after a call about an intoxicated man causing a disturbance. 45 year old Joeseph Root was charged with disorderly conduct and false reporting to law enforcement.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22 year old Joshua Anderson on a warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies are investigating a harassment report taken at a residence on Wilson.

Globe Police are investigating a hit and run accident that occurred at Walmart on Tuesday; a theft report; and criminal damage to a vehicle at a business on South Broad Street.

Obituary

Chesley Allen passed away Tuesday. He was 83.
Visitation for Chesley Allen will be Saturday at 9:am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Claypool. The funeral is at 10:00.

Study Shows Unemployment Better for Mental Health Than Bad Job

Slate Magazine reports that researchers at Australian National University followed 7,000 people over a period of seven years. Not surprisingly, those who went from no employment to high quality jobs showed improved mental health. But those who went from jobless to thankless, unstable positions became more depressed and anxious than those who were never hired at all.

Not only that but the mental health of workers in what they called “low psychosocial quality jobs” declined over time. And the worse the job, the more it damaged workers’ sense of well-being.

The researchers concluded that employement strategies for unemployed people need to take into account job design and workplace policy.

Beware of Japan Disaster Scams

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office is warning Arizonans to beware of relief scams following the Japan disaster. Attorney General Tom Horne says consumers should only make contributions to reputable, established charitable organizations.

Be skeptical of anyone who asks for a donation by requesting your credit card number or bank account number over the phone.

When in doubt about an organization, call the Secretary of State’s Office or visit their website to make sure the charity is registered with the Secretary of State.

Globe Police arrested 19 year old Ramon Gonzales yesterday at a residence on Manzanita for sexual misconduct with a minor.

An officer followed up on a case from last week and arrested 21 year old Robert Salcido for domestic violence/aggravated assault.

43 year old Glen Edwards was arrested for domestic violence last night after a domestic dispute at a residence on Euclid.

Last night officers responded to a call about an intruder at a vacant residence on South Street. 26 year old Malinda Harrison and 23 year old Sterling Hunter were charged with criminal trespass and criminal damage.

30 year old Jesse Contreras was arrested for criminal trespass shortly after midnight at a residence on Haskins Road.

Apache Junction Police arrested 35 year old Cory Cook of Miami on warrants for unlawful flight from law enforcement and attempted stalking.

Phoenix Police arrested 27 year old Jessica Cosen of San Carlos on a warrant for criminal simulation.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage to a vehicle on Ice House Canyon Road.

Public Invited to Saturday Roosevelt Dam Centennial Event

The public is invited to celebrate the 100th birthday of Theodore Roosevelt Dam by taking a walk across the crest of the dam as part of a free centennial event this Saturday (March 19).

The event starts at 9:am at the Roosevelt Lake Visitor’s Center. There will be informational videos and presentations throughout the day. Complimentary shuttle buses will take visitors to the crest of the dam on a first come, first served basis.

Temporary Closures Friday Near Roosevelt Dam

Several areas near Roosevlt Dam will be clossed to the public for 15 hours on Friday (March 18) during the Centennial Celebration.

The Amphitheater in Windy Hill Campground and the Vineyard Picnic area will be closed. This includes all parking areas, buildings and beach areas.

The closures will be in effect from midnight until 3:pm on Friday.

SRP Donates $24,000 to Local and Regional Non-Profits

Salt River Project has donated $24,000 to 12 local and regional community organizations to share in the centennial celebration of Theodore Roosevelt Dam. SRP says the money will support programs that serve communities who have ties with the dam. In many cases, the local residents had family members who were involved in the dam’s construction.

Some of the local organizations that will each receive $2,000 are: Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum, Cobre Valley Center for the Arts, Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center, Friends of the Globe Library, Gila County Historical Museum, Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami Sports Hall of Fame and Pinal Mountain Little League.
