State Attorneys General Call Beverage a 'Binge in a Can'

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has joined with 17 other state attorneys general to release a letter to the Pabst Brewing Company. The letter asks the company to change its marketing strategy and to lower the alcoholic serving content in its new Blast malt beverage.

The beverage is sold in brightly colored packaging that appears to be designed to attract young customers. The 23.5 ounce container also has enough alcohol to be considered binge drinking if consumed on one occasion. Binge drinking is defined as drinking five or more servings of alcohol in an hour for men, four for women. This is enough to place a person at risk for legal intoxication and cause a threat to public health and safty.

Miami Council Meets Monday at 6:30

Miami Council meets Monday at 6:30pm. There will be an update on the current status of the wastewater design. The Council will consider directing the Town Manager and staff to repair the bathrooms at Miami Memorial Park and prepare rules for public use of park facilities for events. The Council will also consider purchasing a passenger tram vehicle. The $3500 cost and the cost of bringing the vehicle here from Florida will be reimbursed by the Genesis group.

The first meeting of the Town of Miami Municipal Property Corporation Board of Directors will be Monday afternoon at 4:30. They’ll review and approve the Bylaws and appoint officers. The agenda also includes Open Meeting Law training.

The Wastewater Adfvisory Board meetings scheduled for Monday and Thursday have been cancelled.

Globe Council Meets Monday at 6:00

Globe City Council meets Monday at 6:pm. The Council will proclaim April 29 as National Arbor Day in the City of Globe. There will be a presentation about the Southern Gila County Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

The Council will consider a mutual aid agreement with Canyon Fire Department. They will also consider adding a new section to the City Code called “Failure to Obey Speed Limit.”

Gas Prices at 32-Month High

Gasoline prices in Arizona have risen to a 32-month high. AAA Arizona says the average statewide fuel price increased 3 cents since last week to $3.69 a gallon. That’s an increase of three cents. The nationwide average also rose three cents to $3.84.

Here in Globe-Miami, prices are around $3.74 a gallon.

Police Log

Nobody was hurt in a two vehicle accident yesterday morning in the 500 block of Miami Road. 25 year old Donald Price was arrested for driving with a revoked license.

18 year old Brian Barraza was arrested last night for DUI.

Globe Police are investigating a hit and run accident at a business on Hill Street and a theft at residence in Globe Mobile Home Park.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office cited and released 35 year old Jose Mange for driving with a suspended license.

A School Resource Officer took a report of a weapon offense at Charles Bejarano School.

Moose Easter Egg Hunt

The Globe Moose Lodge Easter Egg Hunt will be held this Saturday (April 23). The Easter Egg Hunt for children 4 and younger will be at 9:am. The hunt for 5 to 7 year olds is at 9:30 and for8 to 10 year olds is at 10:00.

Tickets will be sold for a chance to win a Children’s Easter Basket, a Girl’s Easter Basket and a Boy’s Easter Basket, valued at $25 each.

Public Meeting About Steam Engine

A public meeting will be held tonight (Thursday) from 6 until 7:pm to discuss the feasibility of restoring the 1774 Baldwin Steam Engine at Veterans Memorial Park at Globe City Hall.

Arizona Eastern Railway has expressed interest in restoring the engine for use on the Copper Spike Excursion. They would like to hear what the community has to say about the idea.

The meeting is at Globe City Hall.

Second Prescription Drug Take-Back on April 30

On Saturday, April 30, the US Drug Enforcement Administration will partner with state and local law enforcement agencies for the second National Prescription Drug Take-Back. The purpose of the event is to help consumers clean out their medicine cabinets of potentially dangerous expired, used, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Last September, Arizonans turned in more than 3 tons of prescription drugs at nearly 75 sites around the state. The next event will be from 10:am until 2:pm on April 30.

The local disposal site will be the Department of Public Safety Office on Highway 60.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 41 year old Sheryl Robles on a child support warrant.

A Gila County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 188. The vehicle contained three undocumented aliens. They were taken to the jail to await the arrival of the Border Patrol.

Globe Police are investigating a hit and run accident on South Broad Street; a theft at a local radio tower; and a theft at Walmart.

Obituary

Former Globe resident Jack B. Long, Jr. passed away Wednesday at Odysey Hospice Care in Mesa. He is survived by his sister Patricia of Globe and his brother.
Services for Jack Long, Jr. will be announced.

New Law Gives Schools Some Spending Flexibility

Governor Brewer has signed into law a bill that will allow any remaining tax-credit donations from last year and previous years to be used to fill in cuts made to classroom budgets.

Taxpayers can give $200 a year to schools in tax credit donations, $400 if filing jointly as a married couple. The money has been restricted to field trips and character education.

The Arizona Republic reports that the temporary measure will allow school districts to use the money for books, classroom supplies, library materials, technology and buses for up to two years.

A motorcycle driver received non-life threatening injuries yesterday after apparently running into the back end of a four door sedan on Highway 60 at Miami Ave.

A woman reported seeing a mountain lion near her back yard on Rice Street. Miami Police responded and also saw the lion as it was walking back up the mountain.

Miami Police arrested 21 year old Matthew Miller yesterday for disorderly conduct/domestic violence.

Globe Police arrested 41 year old Sheryl Robles for domestic aggravated assault after a disturbance early this morning on Euclid.

Yesterday Globe PD referred two juveniles to juvenile probation in connection with an investigation from April 13. One juvenile was referred for burglary, possession of a firearm on school property, tampering with evidence, false reporting to law enforcement, disruption of an educational facility and theft. The other juvenile was referred for possession of a firearm on school poroperty, tampering with evidence and disruption of a school facility.

37 year old Robert Alexander was arrested last night for DUI.

18 year old Kyle Underwood was arrested yesterday for reclkless driving and driving with a suspended license.

Gila County Sheriff’s Criminal Task Force arrested 40 year old Sergio Gutierrez on a warrant for probation violation for use of a dangerous drug, and a DPS warrant for failure to appear for driving with a suspended license.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating criminal damage in the area of Mayss Steet. A cable on a gate was allegedly cut.

Obituary

June Bradford of Globe passed away Tuesday at Faubush Family Home. She was 89. She is survived by 4 sons, including Mike and Ron Bradford of Globe; her daughter; and 12 grandchildren.
Visitation for June Bradford will be Friday at 6:pm at Miles Funeral Services Globe. The funeral is Saturday at 10:am.
