Blogger.com Technical Problems, Blog Posts Dumped After Wednesday AM
Technical problems at blogger.com resulted in the "temporary" removal of all blog posts since Wednesday morning and no new posts could be published on Friday. (Details here.)
Unfortunately, this included the removal of all posts on this blog about weekend local events. This is a shame because there are some fun "Old West Days" events going on, including the Street Fair in downtown Globe, a performance about Wyatt Earp at the Center for the Arts, and the Copper Dust Rodeo.
Blogger was restored on Friday night and blog posts were being restored.
But as of 3:15pm Saturday, the missing posts have not been restored to this KIKO News blog. I hope they will be eventually.
In the meantime, I will post some fun Old West-related features here and on my Facebook page, which I have never really used much and am turning into a supplement to this blog.

Letter Carrier Food Drive This Saturday
The National Association of Letter Carriers is conducting their 19th annual National Food Drive this Saturday. Food collected will be distributed to local food banks.
Just place a food donation next to your mailbox. Your Letter Carrier will pick up your donation and deliver it to the food bank.

Globe Presents 'Old West Days'
The City of Globe is presenting Old West Days in downtown Globe this weekend, beginning with the Grand Parade starting at 9:am.
The Street Fair begins immediately after the parade by the Old Courthouse and the Historic Railroad Depot. Entertainment inlcudes music, horse drawn wagon rides, storytellers and old west shootouts.There will also be lots of food, crafts and guided tours of the Historic Jail, Old Courthouse and Globe Cemetery.

Fire Restrictions on Tonto National Forest
Fire restrictions went into effect this week on the Tonto National Forest due to drought conditions, hot temperatures and increased fire danger. Most types of fire or fire-causing activities are prohibited.
Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire or charcoal-burning device is prohibited.
Restrictions also apply to smoking outside of a cleared area, operating internal combustion power tools, using welding equipment or torches with open flames, operating combustion engines without spark-arresting devices, or discharging firearms except in accordance with Arizona hunting laws.
However, the use of petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, and heating devices are allowed, and some developed campgrounds are also exempted from the restrictions.
Also remember that all fireworks are prohibited on the Tonto National Forest at all times.

Obituary
Opal E. Spitler of Globe passed away Saturday at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson. She was 86. She is survived by her daughter Verlene Breckenridge; and her sons Curley and Berry Spitler.
Visitation for Opal Spitler is tomorrow (Friday) at Noon at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is at 1:00.

'Wyatt Earp: A Life on the Frontier'
The Cobre Valley Center for the Arts presents Wyatt Earp: A Life on the Frontier at 1:pm on Saturday. The play is set in the mid 1920’s. An elderly Wyatt Earp tells of his adventures during the final days of the American frontier. The play features The Contemporary Wyatt Earp, a descendent of the historic Wyatt. It has toured throughout the Southwest, as well as Alaska, England, Hungary, Ireland and Scotland.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the Center for the Arts Front Desk. For information call 425-0884.
"Bawdy Broad Street Tour' is Back
The Bawdy Broad Street Tour returns Friday as part of this weekend’s Old West Days activities. The history walking tour visits the bars, bordello’s and gambling establishments of Globe’s colorful past.
Tours begin at 6:30pm inside the historic 1910 Sheriff’s Office and Jail. Tickets are $5.

GCC Offers 'More Kids in the Woods' Camps
Gila Community College is offering “More Kids in the Woods” science camps to local students this summer. The goal of the camps is to connect kids to the forest and the natural world so they can learn and teach others about good stewardship, land ethics and forest health. The program is a partnership with the US Forest Service, NRCS, U of A Cooperative Extension, and EAC Gear-Up.
There will be four camps split by grade level, ncluding kindergarten through 2nd grade; 3rd through 6th grade; 7th through 9th grade; and 10th through 12th grade.
Application forms are available at the Gila Pueblo Campus administration office. For information call Dean Patricia Burke at 425-8481.
Globe Senior Center Golf Tournament
The Globe Senior Center’s 1st Annual Golf Tournament will take place next Saturday, May 21. Teams of three will compete for a $400 first prize and $200 second prize. Other contests include a $500 Hole in One, $50 Straightest Drive, and Double Your Money—Within the Circle.

Miami Library Book Sale Extended
The Friends of the Miami Memorial Library have extended their Spring Book Sale until Friday. There is still a large collection of like-new hardback and paperbacks, and the “$1 bag of books” rooms.
'Picket Fire' Contained
The Picket Fire near Superior was completely contained Tuesday. The fire started Sunday morning near the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. It burned more than 1300 acres.
